Overview

Bigjpg uses AI-based single-image super-resolution to enlarge uploaded images, reduce noise and compression artifacts, and enhance detail and sharpness. It supports photos and artwork, including anime images and illustrations. That range is useful when source images need both greater dimensions and cleanup, though enlargement cannot remove the need to start with a suitable source image.

Key features

Scale and noise controls

Users can choose enlargement from 2× to 16× and noise reduction from None to Highest. The controls let users adjust processing to the source rather than apply one fixed setting. Free users are capped at 4×, while paid plans raise the maximum to 16×.

Batch processing and API

Bigjpg supports batch processing, but the free plan excludes batch mode and parallel enlarging. Paid members can use the API for uploads, enlargement, result queries, and task retries. Those options suit repeat jobs and software workflows; for occasional single-image use, they offer little reason to pay on their own.

Privacy and processing

Uploaded images are used to provide the requested enhancement and are not publicly displayed. Bigjpg says it deletes images within 24 hours for free accounts and within 72 hours for premium accounts, and does not use uploads to train or improve its models without explicit, informed consent. It says communications use TLS 1.2 or higher and stored data and backups are encrypted; payment cards are handled by PCI DSS-compliant third-party processors rather than stored directly by Bigjpg.

Logged-out users must keep the browser open during processing or the enlarged image will be lost. Logged-in users can close it because offline enlarging is supported. That distinction matters if a job needs to run unattended.

Pricing

The free plan is free and allows 20 pictures per month, slow speed, shared server access, 5MB maximum uploads, and up to 4× enlargement. It includes offline enlarging but not parallel enlarging or batch mode. This is enough for light use with small files, but the monthly quota and scale cap quickly constrain regular work. The homepage FAQ also gives free uploads a 3000×3000-pixel limit.

Basic costs 6.00 USD per month, billed 2 Months as a one-time payment. It includes 500 pictures per month for 2 months, 50MB uploads, and up to 16× enlargement. It is the lowest paid tier for a short, defined run of work; it does not renew as a subscription according to its one-time-payment term.

Standard costs 12.00 USD per month, billed 6 Months as a one-time payment. It provides 1,000 pictures per month for 6 months, 50MB uploads, and 16× enlargement. It fits a longer project with more monthly volume than Basic.

Premium costs 22.00 USD per month, billed 12 Months as a one-time payment. It raises the monthly allowance to 2,000 pictures for 12 months, with the same 50MB upload and 16× limits. It suits sustained, higher-volume use; the longer term is a poor fit if demand is uncertain. All paid plans permit larger uploads than free, while their stated scale limit is the same.

Platforms

Bigjpg is available on web, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, and supports API access. The range accommodates desktop and mobile use as well as integration into an existing process; API access is for paid members.

Who it's for

Bigjpg is best for people who regularly enlarge photos or artwork and want control over both scale and noise reduction. The paid plans are more appropriate for larger files, high magnification, batch work, or API workflows. People handling only a few small images can start free, but should expect slow processing and a strict quota. Choose another tool if the 5MB free upload cap or 4× maximum is too restrictive and a paid commitment is not worthwhile.

Pros and cons

Pros: Up to 16× enlargement and noise reduction from None to Highest give users meaningful control over enhancement.
Pros: Photo and artwork support, batch processing, and a paid API accommodate varied and repeat workflows.
Pros: Published deletion windows and a no-training-without-consent policy address common concerns about uploaded images.
Cons: Free use is limited to 20 pictures per month, 5MB uploads, and 4× enlargement, with slow speed and no batch mode.
Cons: Logged-out processing depends on keeping the browser open, making unattended jobs less convenient.
Cons: Paid plans are one-time payments tied to two-, six-, or twelve-month terms, so the longer tiers require confidence in ongoing use.

Alternatives

Image Upscaling Software and AI Image Upscalers are useful starting points for comparing tools across the category.

NextGenUp is the better fit for readers who want a free, open-source MIT-licensed option with no subscription or trial limit.
Imglarger may suit lighter use on mobile or Mac, but its free plan allows 100 credits per month, one image at a time, 1024px maximum input side, and 2× scale.
PixelPanda Image Upscaler is worth considering for one-time credit purchases: its listed options include 10 credits for 1.99 USD per month and 50 credits for 10.00 USD per month, both one-time purchases.
Super Resolution offers a free web/API option, but its free plan is limited to three images a day, photo mode, up to 2×, and watermarked output, without batch processing or API access.
Real-ESRGAN is another free, open-source option for readers considering self-hosted software.
LetsEnhance is an alternative to consider for its API-oriented offering and free credits.
Upscale.media is another freemium option with an API.
Adima Image Upscaler Pro is an alternative for Android or Windows users.

Verdict

Choose Bigjpg if you need adjustable enlargement, cleanup, and higher-volume processing across photos or artwork, particularly through batch jobs or a paid API. Its free plan is suitable for occasional small images, but the 4× ceiling, 5MB cap, and 20-picture quota are real constraints. Look elsewhere if you need a genuinely unrestricted free workflow or do not want a paid plan for larger files and stronger enlargement.
