Overview

Zoho Books is accounting software for businesses that need to manage bookkeeping, invoicing and, in some cases, stock in one system. It suits solo operators as well as teams that need deeper inventory controls, though the free plan’s revenue ceiling may rule it out as a business grows.

Its breadth is a strength: banking, expenses, projects, reporting and online payments sit alongside core accounting. The main decision is whether the plan’s user and transaction allowances match the business; moving up unlocks more capacity but raises the annual-billing price substantially.

Key features

The accounting workflow covers invoicing, bills, banking, expenses, projects, reports and online payments. Bank feeds and automated reconciliation help bring transactions into the books, while receipt capture supports expense recording. These capabilities make it useful beyond invoice creation, particularly for businesses that want project activity and routine accounting together.

Inventory is a particular advantage for sellers handling physical goods. Zoho Books can track stock, issue reorder alerts, and manage warehouses, serial numbers, batches and bin locations. That depth is more useful to inventory-based businesses than to a service provider that only needs to record income and expenses. Foreign transactions are supported, with exchange rates applied automatically in real time.

Dedicated iOS and Android apps sync changes across devices and include automatic cloud backup. Transactions are protected with two-factor authentication and SSL encryption, and Zoho Books does not store credit card information. Support runs Monday to Friday, 9 am to 9 pm ET; email, voice and chat availability depends on plan. Professional and higher plans add team collaboration through chat, voice, video and screen sharing.

Pricing

The free plan costs $0.00 USD per free and is aimed at solopreneurs and micro businesses. It is available indefinitely while annual revenue remains at or below $50K, but allows only 1 user plus 1 accountant, 1,000 invoices and 1,000 expenses a year, and 50 receipt autoscans a month. It also caps scheduled reports at 5. That is a meaningful no-cost starting point, but the revenue condition and modest quotas make it a poor fit for businesses expecting to scale without upgrading.

Paid plans include a 14-day free trial. Prices below are annual-billing rates; monthly billing costs more. Subscriptions have no contract commitment and can be cancelled.

Standard — $15.00 USD per month annually ($20 monthly): 3 users, 5,000 invoices and 5,000 expenses annually, and 200 receipt autoscans per month. This is the step up for a small business that has outgrown the free caps but does not need the higher-tier allowances.
Professional — $40.00 USD per month annually ($50 monthly): 5 users, 10,000 invoices, 10,000 bills/expenses annually, and 200 receipt autoscans monthly. It fits a larger working team; collaboration tools are available from this tier.
Premium — $60.00 USD per month annually ($70 monthly): 10 users, 25,000 invoices and 25,000 bills/expenses annually, plus 1,000 receipt autoscans monthly. The higher quotas suit businesses with heavier transaction volume.
Elite — $120.00 USD per month annually ($150 monthly): 10 users, 100,000 invoices and 100,000 bills/expenses annually, and 1,000 receipt autoscans monthly. It is the capacity-oriented option; app connections to online sales channels are available on Elite.
Ultimate — $240.00 USD per month annually ($275 monthly): 15 users, 100,000 invoices and 100,000 bills/expenses annually, and 3 million records/rows. It offers the largest team allowance and record capacity in this lineup.

Standard’s three seats may constrain teams, while the larger plans increase costs quickly. Compare annual quotas as well as user counts: more seats do not always mean more invoice or receipt capacity.

Platforms

Zoho Books has dedicated apps for Android and iOS. Changes sync across devices, with automatic cloud backup.

Who it's for

Choose Zoho Books if you want accounting workflows that extend from invoices and banking to inventory, or if your team needs project accounting and multiple user seats. The free plan can suit a small operation below the $50K annual revenue threshold. Businesses with higher revenue, greater transaction volume or more collaborators should compare paid-plan limits before committing.

It is less compelling if you need only basic bookkeeping and would not use the inventory, projects or broader accounting toolkit: the paid tiers may buy more capacity than that simpler workflow requires.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad accounting coverage combines invoicing, bills, banking, expenses, projects, reporting and online payments.
Pros: Detailed inventory controls include warehouses, reorder alerts, serial and batch tracking, and bin locations.
Pros: The ongoing free tier includes an accountant seat and substantial invoice and expense quotas for an eligible micro business.
Cons: Free access ends above $50K in annual revenue, so it is not a long-term option for every growing business.
Cons: Seat and transaction limits differ by plan, and monthly billing is more expensive than the annual rates.

Verdict

Zoho Books is a strong choice for small and growing businesses that want accounting and inventory controls together, with a free entry point and room to scale through paid tiers. Its broad workflow and stock management are the main reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if the revenue-gated free plan, rising paid costs or tier-specific limits do not fit your operation.
