Overview

BitComet is a free client for BitTorrent, HTTP and FTP downloads, best suited to people managing several transfers at once. Its appeal is the mix of torrent tools, cross-protocol sources and task controls; the personal-use-only license makes it a poor fit for commercial work.

It brings more than basic torrent retrieval: users can schedule bandwidth, select files within a task and connect a mobile app to the desktop client remotely. That breadth is useful for a busy download queue, though it also means BitComet is not simply a lightweight torrent-only choice.

Key features

More ways to source and finish downloads

Magnet links, DHT, HTTP seeding and UDP tracker Protocol v2 provide several ways to participate in BitTorrent transfers. Long-Term Seeding Technology looks for additional seeds when a download is stuck near completion. It may help with a stalled transfer, but does not ensure one will finish.

Cross Protocol Downloading can use HTTP, FTP and eMule sources during BitTorrent downloads. This is a practical advantage when those sources exist for the content; it does not make them available for every torrent. Selective download lets users choose which files within a task to retrieve.

Queue management and remote access

Global and per-task upload and download limits, bandwidth scheduling and automatic shutdown give users control over how downloads compete with other network activity. These settings are especially useful when several tasks run together or when transfers should stop consuming bandwidth at certain times.

Intelligent Disk Caching uses memory to reduce hard-drive read and write frequency, a targeted efficiency benefit for systems handling frequent download activity. Video preview prioritizes a file's header and tail so users can preview video while it downloads; that is useful for checking a file before the transfer is complete, not a substitute for finishing it.

The cloud service allows the BitComet Mobile app to connect to a desktop edition behind NAT or a firewall, with end-to-end encryption. That makes remote task access more viable without direct network reachability, though the feature is specifically a mobile-to-desktop connection.

BitComet also supports DHT without a tracker, Windows ICF and ICS configuration, and UPnP router port mapping. Its license says tracker and peer exchanges are anonymous and contain no personal information, and that BitComet does not collect or reveal user privacy.

Pricing

BitComet: 0.00 USD per free. The plan is free of charge for private personal use and non-commercial purposes only. There is no paid tier described; the license restriction is the important trade-off for anyone considering it at work or for commercial activity.

Platforms

BitComet supports Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. The download page also offers Docker container images for GUI and WebUI, and the client supports a web interface. It lists 53 supported languages.

Who it's for

BitComet suits personal users who run many simultaneous downloads and want controls over individual tasks, bandwidth and shutdown behavior. It is particularly relevant when torrent transfers may benefit from HTTP, FTP or eMule sources, or when remote access to a desktop client matters. Commercial users should choose software whose license permits that use.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad download-source support: BitTorrent, HTTP and FTP downloads, plus HTTP, FTP and eMule sources during torrent transfers, can help users combine several available routes.
Detailed queue controls: Global and per-task speed limits, scheduling and automatic shutdown suit people balancing downloads against other network use.
Remote connection option: The encrypted mobile-to-desktop service can reach a client behind NAT or a firewall.

Cons

Non-commercial license only: The free plan is limited to private personal use, ruling it out for commercial deployments.
Cross-protocol sourcing depends on availability: Additional HTTP, FTP or eMule sources help only when they exist for the download.

Alternatives

Choose BitTorrent Classic if you want a freemium torrent client with Windows and macOS support; its Basic plan is free, while Ad-Free is 6.95 USD.

µTorrent Classic is another freemium option, with Android and Windows support and paid Ad-Free and Pro plans billed yearly for readers who want those tiers.

Feem is a better match for general file transfers across a wider mix of platforms: its free plan allows unlimited file transfers, with a paid iOS plan also offered.

Consider TorrServer if a self-hosted torrent streaming server is the closer fit; it is free and GPL-3.0 licensed.

Transmission is a free alternative for readers who prioritize a client with all features included and no ads or tracking.

WebTorrent is a free, non-profit open-source option under the MIT License.

BiglyBT is another free choice, with support for Android, Linux, macOS, web and Windows.

Deluge is a free BitTorrent client with a published source repository, suited to readers who want an open-source project.

Browse Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Software or Download Manager Software for more options.

Verdict

BitComet is a strong fit for personal users who manage multiple downloads and value its combination of torrent, HTTP and FTP support, additional source options and granular queue controls. Its clearest reason to choose another client is the non-commercial license; its cross-protocol advantage also depends on other sources being available.
