Overview

OpenUp brings together psychologists, lifestyle experts, financial coaches, nutritionists and medical doctors, plus group sessions and self-guided learning. Founded in 2020 and based in Amsterdam, it serves employees, managers, family members and organisations from start-ups to large enterprises.

For employees covered by an employer partnership, sessions are unlimited and do not need manager approval; appointments are available within 48 hours. Coaching is offered in 45 languages. The expert network of more than 200 certified professionals gives users a range of routes into support, rather than limiting the benefit to one kind of concern.

Managers and HR cannot see who uses OpenUp or what they discuss. Employers receive anonymised, aggregated insights instead, a useful boundary for employees wary of workplace visibility. OpenUp says its information security system is certified to ISO 27001 and NEN 7510, and that health data is handled within the European Economic Area and held in the EU.

Key features

Expert sessions: Live therapy and coaching cover psychological, lifestyle and financial topics. Unlimited access is a substantial employer benefit, though it depends on an organisational partnership.
Vitality Check: This roughly 10-minute assessment gives users personalised recommendations and contributes anonymised organisational insights. It offers a quick starting point for self-guided support, not a substitute for an expert session.
AI well-being coach: The coach helps users reflect and consider next steps, but does not diagnose or provide clinical advice. A 24/7 human escalation pathway is available for acute distress signals, an important distinction for anyone seeking clinical care.
Session notes: AI-assisted notes are made only with consent and reviewed by the expert. Audio and video recordings are not stored.
Support and access: A support line staffed by qualified mental health first aid responders is advertised for any time of day or night. Employees can also use Microsoft single sign-on for MyOpenUp; mobile apps are offered for iOS and Android.

Pricing

OpenUp is a paid service for organisations, with custom pricing for an employer partnership. The plan is billed per employee per year and includes unlimited one-to-one sessions for employees. That structure suits employers wanting predictable access without session-by-session employee approval, but organisations need a tailored quote to assess cost.

People whose employer does not offer OpenUp can book one free first session, then buy the Three-session card for €249.00 EUR per once. It includes three online sessions of 25 minutes each. This gives individuals a defined way to try professional support, but it is not an ongoing free plan and the card offers far less access than the employer partnership.

Platforms

OpenUp is available on web, Android and iOS. The mobile app supports access away from a desktop, while Microsoft single sign-on is an option for employees with a Microsoft account.

Who it's for

OpenUp makes the most sense for employers seeking a confidential, broad well-being benefit, and for employees who want a choice of therapy, coaching or practical lifestyle and financial support. Its anonymised reporting lets organisations see aggregated insights without identifying individual users. It is less suited to someone seeking a free individual service or a long-term individual plan: outside an employer partnership, access starts with one free session and then requires a paid card.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited sessions without approval make the employer plan unusually direct for employees who need repeated support.
Pro: Managers and HR do not see individual usage or discussions, while employers still receive anonymised, aggregated insights.
Pro: More than 200 experts, 45 coaching languages and multiple support formats give organisations and employees breadth of choice.
Con: Employer pricing is custom, so buyers cannot compare the annual per-employee cost without requesting a quote.
Con: Individual access becomes a €249.00 EUR one-time purchase after the free first session, and the three sessions are limited to 25 minutes each.
Con: The AI coach is for reflection and next steps, not diagnosis or clinical advice; users needing clinical care should choose professional support.

Alternatives

For more employee mental health options, see Employee Mental Health Software.

Optum Global EAP is another paid workplace option across web and mobile, with custom pricing and no free plan. Modern Health is worth considering for employers seeking a PEPM benefit package whose features and services vary by package. Siffi may suit buyers comparing published monthly options, including Base counselling at 5.00 EUR per month for 30.0% of total employees and Premium at 70.00 EUR per month for 5.0% of total employees.

Unmind is another enterprise platform with negotiated rates based on population, geography and scope. Oliva offers a toolbox at 5.00 EUR per month per person, with an extra session fee of €65, 38 languages, 24/7 support lines and forever access; it may suit organisations comparing a lower published per-person starting price. Evoluno offers a self-care plan with activities, assessments, breathing exercises, meditations, HR surveys and app usage monitoring, as well as an Enterprise plan.

Headspace for Organizations has a Core for Small Businesses plan at 45.00 USD per year per employee; its displayed price varies by organisation size. TELUS Cloud Fax is another listed alternative.

Verdict

Choose OpenUp if you are an employer that wants employees to reach a wide range of professionals privately, with unlimited sessions and no approval hurdle. Its strongest reason to buy is that mix of access, breadth and confidentiality; its main drawback is custom employer pricing, while individuals face a three-session limit after their free first appointment. People shopping for a lower-cost individual route or a product built around a different benefit package should compare alternatives.
