Overview

Files are encrypted on the user’s device before upload, and Sia says nobody else can read them. The app says files are redundantly stored across independent hosts worldwide and can be downloaded in parallel from multiple hosts. That distributed design is a meaningful alternative to relying on one central access point, though it comes with a more technical network and developer path alongside the consumer app.

Sia describes the network as peer-to-peer, open source, and supported by the nonprofit Sia Foundation and community donations. The project was founded in 2013. The Sia Storage site identifies The Sia Storage Company. Support is through Discord’s help channel or hello@sia.tech.

Key features

Client-side encryption: Files are encrypted before upload, making this a strong fit for users who prioritize keeping stored files unreadable to others.
Redundant hosting and parallel downloads: Data is distributed across independent hosts, and downloads can draw from multiple hosts. This design avoids dependence on one central access point.
Developer SDKs: Rust, Go, Python, and JavaScript SDKs give application builders several language options for integrating Sia storage.
S3-compatible gateway: The s3d gateway works with rclone, Cyberduck, Nextcloud, Duplicati, and any S3 client, giving users familiar integration routes.
Self-hosting option: The SDK can connect to any indexer, including one a user hosts, which gives technically capable teams more control over their setup.

Pricing

The consumer plans separate storage capacity, app count, and speed, so the right tier depends on how much data and how many apps a user needs. The free tier is useful for a small start, but its 50 GB cap is restrictive for larger libraries.

Plan	Price	Includes
Free	0.00 USD per free	50 GB storage, 3 apps, 500 Mbps
Plus	7.99 USD per month	500 GB storage, 3 apps, 500 Mbps
Pro	14.99 USD per month	5 TB storage, 5 apps, 1 Gbps
Unlimited	19.99 USD per month	10 TB storage, $4.99/TB-mo over, 100 apps, 5 Gbps

Plus raises the cap to 500 GB but keeps the free tier’s app count and speed, making it a capacity upgrade rather than a broader feature step. Pro adds 5 TB, two more apps, and twice the listed speed of Plus. Unlimited is the broadest consumer tier, with 10 TB and up to 100 apps, but storage beyond that costs $4.99/TB-mo over.

Developers should distinguish those app plans from network usage rates: the network page lists median storage pricing of $3.53/TB/month at 3X redundancy, $0.03/TB for upload, and $2.25/TB for download. These rates suit usage-based planning rather than a fixed consumer storage allowance.

Platforms

Sia supports Android, iOS, web, Linux, macOS, Windows, API access, and self-hosted setups. Desktop and mobile apps are available, while API and self-hosting support make it relevant to application builders and technically capable operators.

Who it's for

Sia fits privacy-conscious users who want device-side encryption and distributed storage, as well as developers building storage into applications. The consumer tiers make capacity selection straightforward; SDKs, indexer configuration, and separate network rates are better suited to builders who can work with a more technical model. It is less compelling for someone who only wants a simple fixed storage allowance without engaging with the network distinction.

Pros and cons

Pro: Encryption happens on the device before upload, a practical privacy benefit for personal and application data.
Pro: Multiple SDK languages, S3 compatibility, and self-hosted indexer support give developers several ways to integrate or operate storage.
Pro: Consumer plans show clear capacity, app, and speed tiers, from 50 GB free to 10 TB.
Con: The free plan tops out at 50 GB, and Plus retains the same three-app and 500 Mbps limits.
Con: Network usage rates are separate from consumer plan prices, so developers need to evaluate storage, upload, and download costs independently.

Alternatives

Carbide Network is worth considering for users comparing a provider-oriented option: its home provider plan shows estimated earnings of $24/year per TB at 95% uptime, while personal storage is billed at $0.002/GB.

Peergos may suit users who want an open-source, self-hosted alternative; its maker says the server is open source and offers reproducible builds.

Walrus is another option for users who want a free launch-period plan, though usage limits apply and pricing may evolve.

Aleph Cloud (formerly Aleph.im) may be a better fit when static website hosting with IPFS distribution is the priority.

Filecoin is worth comparing for storage priced from $2.50 / TB / month with a minimum of two copies, or for its free trial.

Pinata may fit API and web users who need gateway and CDN packages, including its Picnic plan with 1TB storage and 500GB bandwidth.

4EVERLAND is a free-tier alternative for users who can work within monthly quotas for IPFS, Arweave, build time, and bandwidth.

BNB Greenfield is another option for users comparing API, self-hosted, or web storage priced in BNB.

Verdict

Choose Sia if device-side encryption, distributed hosting, or developer integration matters more than a conventional centralized storage workflow. Its consumer tiers are easy to compare, and its SDKs and S3-compatible gateway broaden its appeal to builders. Look elsewhere if you want only a simple fixed-capacity service or prefer not to distinguish consumer plan limits from network usage costs.
