Overview

The consumer offering covers Photo Books, Wall Art, prints, posters, calendars, cards, and photo gifts. Customers can design products in a browser, with free Windows or macOS desktop software, or in iOS and Android apps. Automatic layouts are supported, and Photo Books can run to 130 pages.

Photo Portal serves a different purpose: it gives photographers galleries and a shop for storing, sharing, and selling photos, with fulfillment, order management, marketing automation, and analytics. Saal Digital was founded in 1981 and is headquartered in Röttenbach, Germany. Its listed platforms are Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows.

Key features

Design and print ordering

The choice of browser, desktop, and mobile design tools means customers can work across common device types rather than being tied to one editor. Automatic layouts can help arrange images, while the 130-page ceiling gives room for substantial books. Saal says its automated production process produces and ships premium photo products within 24 hours in most cases; that is a production claim, not a promise of delivery timing.

Photographer sales portal

Portal combines galleries, project sales, configurable price lists, product sets, promotions, coupon codes, order management, and automated email workflows. Photo products sold through Portal carry 0% commission, a meaningful advantage for photographers selling prints and other physical goods. Digital downloads are different: their service fee varies by subscription, so sellers should compare the commission against expected download revenue.

Portal data is hosted in Germany. Saal says stored images receive multiple encryption layers and transmissions use SSL/TLS; its Portal pricing page also identifies GDPR and GPSR compliance. Payment options include PayPal, cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and iDEAL | Wero, with availability varying by country. Product questions go through Customer Care, while complaints must be submitted through the Order Cockpit.

Advanced image search and sales training and best practices are marked as coming soon, so they should not be treated as current Portal capabilities.

Pricing

Saal Digital is freemium, with consumer products priced from $50 one-time. For Portal, the Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 10 GB storage, 12% commission on download revenue, and 0% on photo products. It is a sensible starting point for photographers testing the sales workflow, but the storage cap and download fee may become restrictive as galleries and sales grow.

Plan	Price	Storage	Download commission	Photo-product commission
Free	0.00 USD per free	10 GB	12%	0%
Saal Cloud	5.99 USD per month	200 GB	9%	0%
Saal Prio	9.99 USD per month	1 TB	7%	0%
Saal Prio Max	65.99 USD per month	5 TB	5%	0%

Saal Cloud is the lower-cost upgrade for sellers needing more room and a smaller download fee. Saal Prio increases storage to 1 TB and cuts that fee further, while Prio Max is aimed at substantially larger libraries or download businesses that can justify 5 TB and a 5% commission. All plans retain 0% commission on photo products. The listed Portal subscriptions are billed monthly; consumer product purchases are separate one-time costs.

Platforms

The online designer and Portal run on the web; dedicated design apps cover Android and iOS, and desktop software covers Windows and macOS. That range suits households and photographers using mixed devices, though the desktop option is limited to those two operating systems.

Who it's for

Saal Digital is a strong fit for consumers who want a choice of printed photo formats and design routes, especially for longer books or projects built from automatic layouts. It also suits photographers who need client galleries, sales tools, and fulfillment in one Portal, particularly when physical products make up most sales. Photographers whose business depends heavily on digital downloads should pay close attention to the plan-specific commission and storage allowance.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad product range and web, mobile, and desktop design options make it useful for different kinds of photo projects.
Pros: Portal charges 0% commission on photo products across all four plans, keeping print sales distinct from download fees.
Pros: Portal combines gallery, pricing, promotion, order, and email workflow tools for photographer sales.
Cons: Free Portal storage is capped at 10 GB, and download commission starts at 12%.
Cons: Payment availability varies by country, which may limit convenient checkout options for some customers.
Cons: Advanced image search and sales training are not yet current features.

Alternatives

For narrower photo projects, compare Saal Digital with the Photo Calendar Software, Photo Book Software, and Photo Printing Software directories. Lulu Calendar Creator is worth considering when a web-only calendar maker with free project creation and payment only when ordering printed copies is enough. Pixum is an alternative for buyers who want photo books across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows; its small square booklet starts at 9.95 GBP per once for 26 pages, with 4 extra pages at £1.40.

Hofmann offers another broad-platform route for a printed album: its Álbum Apaisado S is 13.99 EUR per once for 24–120 pages, with extra pages at €0.87 each and shipping excluded. PhotobookShop Calendars is a paid alternative for calendar buyers, with a 12-page desk calendar at 19.95 USD per once and shipping extra. Mixbook may suit readers looking for an iOS and web option; its Mixbook+ subscription is 9.99 USD per month through Apple for US customers, and a softcover book starts at 14.99 USD per once.

CEWE is another broad-platform photo-book option, with a Small Square Photo Book at 8.99 GBP per once for 26–202 pages. Motif Photo Calendars is limited to iOS and macOS and charges 29.99 USD per once for a 12-month calendar, with additional months at $1 99 each and tax and shipping excluded. Printique is a paid alternative for photo books, starting at 27.99 USD per once for a 6×4.5 portrait book, with price varying by size, cover, paper, and page count.

Verdict

Choose Saal Digital if you want flexible photo-product design and ordering, or if you are a photographer whose sales mix favors physical products and who can use Portal’s gallery and order tools. Its broad design access and 0% photo-product commission are the clearest reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if your Portal business is download-heavy, storage-intensive, or dependent on a payment method that is not supported in your country.
