Overview

Kilo Code is an open-source coding assistant for developers who want AI help across editors, terminals and remote agents. It suits individuals seeking broad model choice and teams that need shared workflows or enterprise controls; the trade-off is that software access, model inference and cloud compute can each carry separate costs.

Key features

Code help and model choice

Kilo combines code completion, chat and an agent that can generate, refactor and debug code, automate reviews and deploy applications. Its Code, Architect, Debug, Custom and Auto modes give work different starting points, while Auto Model routes tasks through Efficient, Frontier or Free strategies. That flexibility can help balance capability and cost, but it also means users must choose or configure how models are accessed.

More than 500 models from over 60 providers are supported, including free, local and bring-your-own-key (BYOK) options. The free route needs no hosted credit and uses free models where available. Kilo Gateway charges exact provider rates for hosted inference, with no markup; that keeps the inference charge transparent, but it does not remove the separate cost of platform access or cloud compute.

Editor, terminal and cloud workflows

Kilo is available as extensions for VS Code and JetBrains editors, as a CLI, and through cloud agents. Its agents can create repository branches and optionally commit and push changes, making remote work useful when a task should run away from a local editor. Kilo also supports codebase indexing and terminal access.

Integrations include GitHub, GitLab, DoltHub and Bitbucket Cloud for organizations. Kilo for Slack can answer repository questions, implement changes, create branches and open pull requests, but it requires a paid Slack plan and available Kilo credits. Cloud compute is usage-based, billed per second without rounding up or a minimum usage charge, which avoids paying for unused time.

Open source and security

The MIT-licensed source can be inspected, modified, forked or self-hosted, a meaningful option for organizations that want more control. Enterprise security features include privacy controls, audit logs, SSO, OIDC, SCIM and SLA commitments. Kilo's security materials also describe encryption in transit and at rest, SSO/SAML, RBAC, and paid-plan no-retention support.

Pricing

Kilo separates platform subscriptions from AI inference and cloud compute, so the entry plan price is not a complete estimate of usage costs.

Free: 0.00 USD per free. Includes open-source VS Code, JetBrains and CLI extensions, agentic coding, completion and generation, and support for any AI model. Usage is billed separately, so this fits developers who bring a provider key or use local models, rather than those expecting unlimited hosted inference.
Auto Free: 0.00 USD per free. No hosted credit is required; it routes to free models where available and supports BYOK or local models through Ollama or LM Studio. Its cost advantage depends on those model options meeting the user's needs.
Kilo Gateway: 0.00 USD per once. The platform charge is $0 /mo + usage; hosted inference is pay-as-you-go at exact provider rates, with no markup. This suits users who want hosted model choice without a model subscription, while leaving inference spend variable.
Teams: 15.00 USD per month. Billed $15/user/month, it adds team management, usage analytics, AI adoption scoring, shared agent modes, centralized billing, shared BYOK and priority support. It is the practical step up for teams that need coordination and visibility; individuals do not get the same benefit from the per-user fee.
Enterprise: custom pricing. Adds governance, security review, SSO, OIDC, SCIM, audit logs, model and provider limits, SLA commitments and dedicated support. A 14-day trial includes Enterprise features for evaluation. This is aimed at organizations with formal access and security requirements, rather than users seeking a fixed-price tier.
Kilo Pass Starter: 19.00 USD per month, with up to $26.60 per month in credits; Kilo Pass Pro: 49.00 USD per month, with up to $68.60 per month in credits; and Kilo Pass Expert: 199.00 USD per month, with up to $278.60 per month in credits. Each is a monthly AI credit subscription with up to 50% bonus credits and can be cancelled anytime. These suit users who prefer a credit subscription; the free and Gateway choices avoid a fixed monthly credit commitment.

Platforms

Kilo supports VS Code, JetBrains, CLI and cloud agents, with listed surfaces including IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, Slack and Code Reviewer. The broader platform list also includes Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. This range gives developers several ways to reach Kilo, though the Slack workflow has the paid-plan and credit requirements noted above.

Who it's for

Kilo is strongest for developers who value model choice, open-source control and the ability to move between editor, CLI and remote-agent work. Teams can justify the subscription when shared modes, billing, analytics or priority support matter. It is a weaker fit for buyers who want one predictable price covering platform, inference and compute, or for Slack users without a paid Slack plan and Kilo credits.

Pros and cons

Pro: Support for 500+ models across 60+ providers, including local and BYOK options, gives users flexibility to select their model route.
Pro: MIT licensing and self-hosting options give technically capable users control over the source and deployment.
Pro: Per-second cloud billing with no minimum charge avoids paying for idle compute.
Con: Separate platform, inference and compute billing makes total cost less straightforward than a single bundled subscription.
Con: Slack-based repository work depends on both a paid Slack plan and available Kilo credits.
Con: The free route relies on free models, BYOK or local models; it is not a promise of included hosted inference.

Alternatives

Choose CodeGPT if its free plan's 10 daily Economy interactions, $1.00 premium welcome credit or BYOK option better match a modest or key-funded workflow. Qoder is another freemium option, with limited free models and completions and a listed Pro plan at 20.00 USD per month.

JetBrains Junie starts with five AI credits on its free plan and lists AI Pro at 8.33 USD per month, so it may suit a reader comparing a credit-based start and lower stated monthly tier. Pick Zed instead when the priority is a free editor plan with 2,000 accepted edit predictions and external-agent or API-key support.

Replit is worth considering for its free daily usage, one live project and one background task at a time. Visual Studio is a Windows-only alternative with a fully featured Community plan for students, open-source contributors and individual developers, plus a Professional monthly plan at 45.00 USD per month.

Choose GitHub Codespaces when usage-billed 2-core or 4-core compute is the comparison that matters. Cursor may suit users seeking a free plan with limited Agent requests and Composer access, or a Pro plan at 20.00 USD per month.

Verdict

Kilo Code is a strong choice for developers and teams who want an open-source assistant with broad model access, multiple work surfaces and room to bring their own infrastructure. Its main reason to choose it is that range and flexibility; its main reason to look elsewhere is the need to manage separate platform, inference and compute bills.
