Overview

Font Awesome is an icon library and toolkit for developers and designers adding icons to websites, apps, and design work. It suits projects that need a broad icon catalog with several ways to integrate and style it. Its main trade-off is that catalog access, pageview limits, hosting, and licensing vary by plan.

The Font Awesome 7 page lists 65,928 Pro icons and 2,163 Free icons; the homepage describes more than 60,000 icons across over 30 styles. The free catalog is useful for modest needs, but it is only a fraction of the Pro collection. The latest listed release is Font Awesome 7.3.1, released July 7, 2026. Key features

Web Kits can add icons through an embed code, while packages offer another integration route. Developers can also self-host Web Fonts or SVGs. That flexibility suits different deployment preferences, though plan choice matters: Starter and monthly Solo or Team plans are CDN-only, with no downloads or perpetual license.

The web styling toolkit covers sizing, rotation, animation, stacking, duotone, counters, and transforms. Pro Kits can include uploaded custom icons alongside Font Awesome icons, with the number allowed depending on plan. Supported guidance spans Vue, React, Ember, Angular, SCSS, WordPress, and Squarespace. Desktop documentation covers Figma, Sketch, Illustrator, and other design programs.

Formats include SVG, CSS, SCSS, Sass, JavaScript, web fonts, and SVG sprites. Font Awesome also documents a JavaScript API for SVG+JS rendering and a GraphQL API for icon and release information. API tokens can be scoped, revoked, and replaced, which lets third-party tools access account data without sharing account credentials. Security guidance addresses using the SVG with JavaScript library under a strict Content Security Policy; stored data volumes are encrypted and access is controlled with auditable multi-factor authentication.

Font Awesome says it stores account, website-use, and CDN-use data on servers in the United States, with CDN servers worldwide. It invites private reports of security issues. Pro assets cannot be distributed publicly in an open-source repository to people not covered by the license, a material constraint for projects that publish their code.

Pricing

Font Awesome uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 2,163 free icons, 1 Kit, and 10,000 pageviews. It is a sensible starting point for small projects, but the icon selection and monthly-scale pageview allowance may constrain a growing site.

Starter costs 4.00 USD per month (billed $48 per year, billed annually). It adds Core Pro icon packs, 20 custom icons, 5 Kits, and 50,000 pageviews, but remains CDN-only and does not include downloads or a perpetual license. It fits modest web projects that need Pro packs but not broad catalog access.

Solo costs 8.00 USD per month (billed $96 per year, billed annually) and includes all icon packs, Pro+ packs, 200 custom icons, 10 Kits, and 1,000,000 pageviews. Team costs 16.00 USD per month (billed $192 per year, billed annually) and raises those allowances to 400 custom icons, 20 Kits, and 2,000,000 pageviews, while retaining all packs and Pro+ access. These plans suit higher-volume use or teams needing more Kits and custom icons, but the stated CDN-only restriction still applies to monthly plans. Pro+ icons are available in Kit packages only, not other packages.

Platforms

Font Awesome supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. Its web and desktop design guidance makes it relevant to both implementation and design workflows, while self-hosting gives teams a route beyond CDN delivery when their plan and licensing terms permit it.

Who it's for

Choose Font Awesome if you need one icon system across web frameworks, design tools, or self-hosted projects, and can match a plan's pageview and licensing terms to your use. It is less suitable when an open-source project needs to redistribute Pro assets publicly to users outside the license, or when a Starter or monthly plan's CDN-only delivery is incompatible with deployment needs.

Pros and cons

Pros: A large catalog with a free tier provides a low-cost way to start, while paid plans add broader packs and defined custom-icon, Kit, and pageview allowances.
Pros: Kits, packages, web fonts, SVGs, and self-hosting give developers several integration routes, and the toolkit offers detailed styling controls.
Pros: Framework and desktop-design guidance, plus JavaScript and GraphQL APIs, support varied workflows.
Cons: Free includes 2,163 icons and 10,000 pageviews, so larger projects may need a paid tier and its expanded limits.
Cons: Starter and monthly Solo or Team are CDN-only, without downloads or a perpetual license.
Cons: Pro assets cannot be publicly distributed in open-source repositories to people not covered by the license.

Alternatives

The Noun Project is worth considering when downloadable PNG or SVG icons matter more than Font Awesome's developer-oriented integration options; its free account requires attribution and excludes commercial licenses.

Lordicon is a fit when animated icons are the priority: its free tier offers 9,700 animated icons, one collection, unlimited exports, and a commercial license, with attribution required.

Eva Icons offers a free, MIT-licensed set of more than 480 icons for web, Android, and iOS.

Hugeicons may suit teams seeking a free set of 6,000+ Stroke Rounded icons with a web app and design and development plugins, or a paid Pro catalog.

Material Symbols is a free option with more than 2,500 glyphs under Apache License 2.0, in SVG, PNG, and font formats.

Material Design Icons is a free, open-source library under Apache 2.0, though brand and logo icons are excluded and being removed.

Boxicons is another option for web projects, with a paid Pro plan offering web fonts and plugins alongside Pro icons.

Iconoir is a free open-source icon library for web and iOS, with optional donations.

Verdict

Font Awesome is a strong choice for developers and design teams that want a broad icon catalog, extensive styling, and integration options spanning web and desktop workflows. Its free tier offers a practical entry point, while paid plans scale icons, Kits, custom uploads, and pageviews. Look elsewhere if you need to distribute Pro assets publicly beyond licensed users or require downloads under a CDN-only plan.
