Overview

Unity Version Control is an engine-agnostic source-control platform for game teams managing code alongside large files and binaries. It is best suited to projects where developers and artists need to collaborate in one repository without sharing the same workflow. Hosted cloud access keeps seat charges off the bill, while storage and egress caps—and the on-prem seat price—shape the cost trade-off.

Key features

Developers can work with centralized or distributed workflows, including branching and merging, while artists can use file-based workflows. Native large-file handling, file locking, and sparse checkout address common needs in asset-heavy projects. Smart Locks check that a user has the latest version before allowing a file lock, helping reduce conflicts from locking outdated files.

Teams can use Unity-hosted servers or deploy the server on their own infrastructure. The hosted option avoids per-seat charges, while self-hosting may suit teams that need to run their own server but comes with a clear per-seat price. Unity names JIRA, Rider, TeamCity, Jenkins, Bamboo, Unreal Engine, and Discord among its integrations and supported tools.

Access control lists and permissions can be set for repositories, branches, and individual items. Unity says uploads and downloads use SSL and that it allows only SSL connections. Support includes email response in less than 24 hours, remote help for complex problems, and priority for development-team code hotfixes.

Pricing

The Free tier costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited cloud seats, 25 GB of storage per organization per month, and 100 GB of monthly egress. That is a useful starting point for teams whose repositories and data transfers fit within those caps. Usage beyond included limits is pay-as-you-go, so teams with heavier storage or transfer needs should account for that exposure.

Pay-as-you-go has no listed price and includes the same 25 GB of free monthly storage per organization and 100 GB of free monthly egress. Beyond those amounts, usage is pay-as-you-go. The Unity Version Control hosted cloud plan costs 0.00 USD per free, with 25 GB of included monthly storage per organization and unlimited hosted cloud seats. These hosted options remove seat cost as a constraint, but they do not remove the organization-level storage allowance.

Unity Version Control on-prem seats cost 38.00 USD per month, billed at $38 per seat. This is the paid route for teams deploying on their own infrastructure, and the per-seat basis can make it considerably less attractive for large teams than hosted cloud. Unity also offers a free trial of DevOps services to users without DevOps setup when they enable Version Control through Unity Hub; no trial length is stated.

Platforms

Unity provides desktop clients for Windows, macOS on Apple Silicon or Intel, and Linux. The platform coverage also includes web, API, and self-hosted deployment, making it relevant to teams that need more than a single desktop client.

Who it's for

Unity Version Control is a sensible choice for game-development teams combining code and large binary assets, particularly when artists need file-based collaboration alongside developers' branching and merging. Hosted cloud is the more straightforward fit for teams that want unlimited seats without a per-seat fee. Teams with storage or egress needs beyond the included allowances should weigh pay-as-you-go usage, while organizations committed to self-hosting should assess the $38-per-seat monthly cost. It is less compelling for teams that do not need game-oriented large-file workflows or self-hosted options.

Pros and cons

Pro: Centralized and distributed workflows, file-based collaboration, native large-file handling, and sparse checkout serve mixed game-development teams.
Pro: Hosted cloud offers unlimited seats at no seat charge, and teams can instead run the server on their own infrastructure.
Pro: Smart Locks, granular access permissions, SSL-only connections, and named integrations support collaboration and repository control.
Con: Hosted storage is capped at 25 GB per organization monthly, with 100 GB of monthly egress included; higher usage is pay-as-you-go.
Con: On-prem seats cost $38 per seat per month, which raises the price with team size.

Alternatives

For a broader set of game version control software, compare tools in the category. Sketchfab is a better fit for sharing 3D models: its free plan limits model files to 50 MB, while its Pro plan costs 15.00 USD per month billed yearly. Blendkit suits users looking for a free asset library with a stated 200 MiB of private storage on its free plan, rather than repository version control. Daz 3D is an alternative for people seeking Daz Studio and starter content, with a free base offering. ambientCG is a free option for downloading CC0 assets, not a source-control platform. Textures.com is an asset source with a free sample selection and a Starter plan at 13.00 USD per month. KitBash3D is an alternative for purchasing a large library of textured models. 3DExport offers free 3D models alongside paid items. Poly Haven is a free asset library with no paywalls or signup required and CC0 assets.

Verdict

Choose Unity Version Control if your game team needs one system for code and large assets, with developer branching and artist-friendly file workflows and a hosted option that does not charge by seat. Its strongest reason to look elsewhere is cost or capacity: hosted storage and egress are capped, and self-hosting costs $38 per seat monthly. Teams whose usage fits the cloud allowance get the clearest case for it; teams with larger demands should compare that pay-as-you-go exposure with the on-prem seat cost.
