Overview

Buddi centers on setting up accounts and categories, recording transactions, and checking spending habits. That scope suits first-time budgeters who want a place to track routine finances, but it is not a broad financial-management platform. The project began in 2010 and uses the GNU General Public License version 2.0 (GPLv2), which will matter to users who value open-source licensing.

The latest listed version is Buddi-3.4.1.14, with stable files dated 2019-04-03. That age is a practical caveat: anyone choosing Buddi should be prepared to consider compatibility rather than assume the software and its plugins have kept pace with newer systems.

Key features

Accounts and categories give transactions a basic organizational structure, while spending views help users review how money is distributed. The project wiki documents a main budget window, a reports window, a net worth graph, and an income pie graph. Those views make the program more useful than a bare transaction list, though the documented focus remains budgeting rather than advanced financial analysis.

CSV and QIF import and export are handled by plugins in a separate Buddi Plugins project. Older .buddi files need the Import Legacy Buddi Data plugin; the default format is .buddi3. Users who rely on plugins should also account for a version-change warning: older plugins may require updated versions or recompilation. That adds setup work, particularly for people migrating an existing budget.

The project describes Buddi Live as an online option accessible from mobile devices, while noting that phones are difficult to use and tablets work better. It is a possible route to mobile access, but phone users should not expect the same comfortable experience as on a tablet. Support is available through SourceForge discussion forums and a support section. The project lists Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, and Swedish.

Pricing

Buddi costs 0.00 USD per free under its GPLv2 budgeting software plan. There is no free trial because the product is free; there is no paid tier to choose between. That makes it a reasonable fit for cost-conscious users who need basic budgeting, but the price does not offset the extra compatibility steps involved with older data or plugins.

Platforms

Buddi supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. The project also describes a web option, Buddi Live, with mobile-device access; phones are difficult to use, and tablets work better. This gives desktop users a choice of major operating systems, while mobile users should favor a tablet over a phone for that web experience.

Who it's for

Buddi is best suited to individuals with little or no financial background who want to record transactions, organize accounts, and review spending without paying for software. It is less suitable for users who need a recently dated release, depend on older Buddi files, or need plugins to work without compatibility maintenance. The audience listed by SourceForge also includes desktop end users and the financial and insurance industry, but the described tools are centered on straightforward budgeting.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free GPLv2 software keeps the basic budgeting workflow accessible without a subscription or purchase.
Pro: Budget and report views, including net worth and income graphs, give users several ways to review their finances.
Pro: Linux, macOS, and Windows support accommodates users across the major desktop operating systems.
Con: Stable files dated 2019-04-03 make release age a material consideration for anyone prioritizing current compatibility.
Con: Older .buddi data requires a separate legacy-import plugin, and older plugins may need updates or recompilation after a version change.
Con: The mobile web option is described as difficult to use on phones, limiting its practicality for phone-first budgeting.

Alternatives

For a different budgeting choice, consider LUNA when its free plan's unlimited tracks, smart features, UAD Explore Free plug-ins, and Oxide Tape matter more than Buddi's account-and-category budgeting workflow; LUNA also has a Studio plan at 199.00 USD per month. Buddi remains the relevant option between the two for free desktop budgeting across Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Valhalla DSP Plugin Collection is an alternative with a free Freq Echo plan for frequency shifting and analog echo emulation, plus a free trial and macOS and Windows support. Airwindows Consolidated is free and open source, with CLAP, VST3, AU, and LV2 DAW plugins across Linux, macOS, and Windows. Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst is a free real-time spectrum analyzer plug-in for macOS and Windows.

Eventide Anthology XII is a paid collection of 32 plug-ins at 999.00 USD per once, with a free trial and an iLok account requirement. FabFilter Total Bundle costs 1069.00 USD per once for 14 plug-ins and offers a free trial. Guitar Rig has a free Player edition as a standalone application and plug-in. Kazrog KClip 3 is a paid alternative at 39.99 USD per once, with a perpetual license, multiple-device use, and no subscription fees.

Verdict

Choose Buddi if you want a free, focused way to manage accounts, transactions, and spending on a desktop system. Its budget and report views cover the essentials without requiring financial expertise. Look elsewhere if you depend on smooth migration from older files, current plugin compatibility, or a comfortable phone-based workflow.
