Overview

reNamerX is a free desktop utility for applying repeatable naming rules to batches of files. It suits people who want more than basic find-and-replace across Linux, macOS or Windows, without a subscription or purchase. Its strongest practical safeguards are a live preview and undo; the notable boundary is that it renames files, not folders.

Key features

Text operations, case changes and sequential numbering cover everyday cleanup, while regular expressions, date and time insertion, metadata such as creation date and size, and reusable presets make the tool more adaptable for recurring or structured naming jobs. That range is useful when filenames need a consistent pattern, but the app is still centered on file batches rather than broader file organization.

A live preview shows proposed names before changes are applied, and batch operations can be undone with Ctrl+Z; redo is also supported. Those controls reduce the risk of applying a faulty rule across hundreds of files. Browse Files selects individual items, while Browse Folder selects files in a directory. Folder selection should not be confused with folder renaming, which is not supported.

The clean interface offers dark and cyberpunk themes, a presentation choice rather than a change in capability. The project is MIT-licensed and built with Tauri, React and TailwindCSS, with Zustand for state management.

Pricing

reNamerX is free at 0.00 USD per free under the MIT License. There are no paid tiers to weigh against the free edition, making it a straightforward option for individual use or a team seeking a no-cost desktop renamer. The trade-off is practical rather than commercial: Windows users need Windows 10 or newer and a 64-bit system, and building from source requires Node.js 16 or newer, npm or yarn, Rust and Cargo, and Git.

Platforms

The app supports Linux, macOS and Windows. Windows installation requires at least 50MB of free disk space and 4GB of recommended RAM; the repository provides MSI and EXE installer options. Users who encounter installation problems are directed to open an issue on GitHub. The initial release is v1.0.0.

Who it's for

Choose reNamerX if you regularly clean up or standardize file names across batches and want rule flexibility, a preview before committing, and a way to reverse a batch. Its support for multiple desktop platforms and free MIT license also suit people who want to avoid a paid renaming plan. Look elsewhere if your workflow requires renaming directories themselves, or if Windows 10 and 64-bit requirements are a mismatch.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and MIT-licensed, with no paid tier to outgrow.
Pros: Combines basic rules with regex, metadata, date/time insertion and reusable presets for more involved naming patterns.
Pros: Preview plus undo/redo helps contain mistakes in large batches.
Cons: It renames files but not folders, limiting workflows that need directory names changed too.
Cons: Windows requires a recent 64-bit system, and source builds call for a multi-tool development setup.

Alternatives

For a paid one-time option with a short trial, consider RenameKit: its Lifetime License is 9.99 USD per once, includes a 3-day full-feature trial, then caps batches at 20 items and allows one device at a time, with transfers permitted. For Mac-only use, Transnomino is free and its version 10.1.0 requires macOS 14 or later.

Bulk Renamer is another free, MIT-licensed open-source option for Linux, macOS and Windows, with no account, trial or watermark. Nomina is a free cross-platform alternative. PBRenamer is free, cross-platform and GPL-3.0 licensed.

If you want a defined batch allowance, Advanced Renamer offers a free plan for macOS and Windows with 10,000 files and five methods per batch. Ant Renamer is a free Windows program with source code available. ReNamer may suit Windows users who can work within its free Lite edition's non-commercial-use restriction and limits of five rules and five presets; its Pro tier is 29.95 USD per once.

Verdict

reNamerX is a strong fit for anyone who needs flexible, repeatable file renaming across desktop platforms without paying, especially when preview and undo matter. Its broad rule set is the main reason to choose it; the lack of folder renaming is the clearest reason to choose another tool.
