Overview

Coverfairy is a browser-based book production service for self-publishers preparing covers, interiors, and launch materials. It suits authors who want those jobs together, particularly when they need print-ready files as well as ebook assets. Its strongest advantage is the breadth of export and print-preparation tools; its main trade-off is that generated artwork draws down a finite credit allowance.

Key features

Cover design and artwork

Coverfairy keeps titles, subtitles, author names, spine text, and back-cover copy as editable typography layers. That is useful when wording changes after the artwork is settled, rather than forcing authors to rebuild the whole cover. Artwork can be generated, selected from suggestions, or uploaded if owned or licensed. Each delivered generated image, variation, or edit uses one AI credit, while failed generations cost none; authors who expect many rounds of image work should account for the plan caps.

Interior and print preparation

Authors can import Word or EPUB manuscripts and export EPUB, print-ready PDF, or large-print PDF files. Coverfairy calculates print wraps and spines for KDP, IngramSpark, Lulu, and Barnes & Noble Press, covering several major print-on-demand routes. If KDP rejects an unchanged export because Coverfairy miscalculated technical dimensions, it will correct the file without charge or refund the affected pass. That offers a specific safeguard for a consequential print-production error.

Exports and launch materials

Export options include ebook JPG or PNG, 300 DPI print PDF, a 2,400 × 2,400 ACX audiobook JPG, and launch images. Mockups span books, e-readers, cafés, bookshops, and social promotion, which makes the service useful beyond file preparation. An active pass can also provide a Canva-ready PPTX or flattened PDF for import into Canva, but the workflow requires a manual download rather than a direct integration.

Pricing

Start for free is free and includes four one-time AI image credits and watermarked cover drafts. It is a way to begin designing, but watermarks make it a poor fit for final deliverables, and its small one-time credit pool limits experimentation.

Week Pass costs 6.00 USD per once, billed for 7 days, with no renewal. It includes unlimited non-AI cover, interior, and mockup exports plus 20 AI image credits. This is the practical choice for a short production sprint or one book project that needs clean exports without a recurring commitment.

Monthly costs 12.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and can be cancelled anytime. It includes the same unlimited non-AI export categories and 40 AI image credits per billing period. Authors working across multiple books or expecting a longer design cycle get twice the Week Pass's AI allowance, though the monthly term is less economical for a brief, contained job.

Platforms

Coverfairy runs in a browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebook. That broad browser access avoids a desktop-only workflow. Its privacy notice names Supabase for authentication, hosting, and storage, and Stripe for payments; Coverfairy says it does not store full card numbers. Support targets are one UK business day for security reports and paid-export outages, two days for billing, refund, privacy, IP, and print cases, and five days for general questions.

Who it's for

Coverfairy is best suited to independent authors who need a coordinated path from cover and manuscript to print files and promotional mockups, especially those publishing across ebook and print formats. It is less suited to someone seeking only a dedicated AI image generator, or to an author who needs more than 40 delivered AI image results in a monthly billing period.

Pros and cons

Pros: Editable cover text lets authors revise essential wording without baking it into the artwork.
Pros: Manuscript formatting, print-wrap calculations, and launch mockups sit alongside cover design, reducing the need to assemble separate production tools.
Pros: The Week Pass has no renewal, and the KDP dimension-error remedy addresses a concrete print risk.
Cons: Free drafts are watermarked, so the free tier is for trying the service rather than producing a finished cover.
Cons: Paid plans cap AI use at 20 or 40 credits, and every delivered generation, variation, or edit consumes one.
Cons: Canva handoff requires manual download and import rather than a direct connection.

Alternatives

For more focused layout or manuscript workflows, Book Layout Software is a useful category to compare. Authors primarily seeking generated cover art can browse AI Book Cover Generators.

Folio Studio offers a free plan with one active project, Classic and Minimal templates, EPUB and watermark-free PDF export, an introductory AI action, and a full-page illustration; choose it when a single-project writing and layout workflow is the priority. Storyloft gives its free tier one manuscript up to 5,000 words, 10 image credits, 20 Eddy AI conversations, and unlimited worldbuilding, making it a better fit for authors focused on drafting and worldbuilding.

Koberger keeps formatting, design, layout, and preview free, but requires Pro to export finished files; it may suit authors who want to work on a book before paying to export. Blurb BookWright is a desktop book-design application with templates, layout suggestions, and offline editing, a fit for readers who prefer an offline design workflow.

Bookmint provides all 55 templates and design tools, print PDF and EPUB, and unlimited books and saved projects during beta, though free exports carry a watermark unless activated. Folius offers a free browser editor with unlimited books and chapters, Word import, themes, trim sizes, live print preview, and EPUB, Markdown, and backup export; it is a stronger match for chapter-based book creation and preview.

Jutoh is a paid desktop alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with a free trial and support for importing, editing, and creating ebooks in popular formats. Layoutly gives free users one book per month and five exports, while its Pro plan offers unlimited books and exports plus real-time collaboration; it suits teams that need collaborative layout more than Coverfairy's integrated cover-art options.

Verdict

Choose Coverfairy if you are an independent author who wants cover design, interior formatting, print preparation, and launch visuals in one browser-based workflow. The range of outputs and its print-dimension remedy are compelling, but authors with intensive AI-art needs should compare the credit caps, and those wanting only one specialized task may find a more focused alternative a better fit.
