Overview

Calmly Writer puts concentration ahead of broad document-production features. Markdown formatting appears as readable text while typing, which lets writers structure a draft without working around visible markup. That approach suits people who want to stay in the writing flow, though it is less compelling for users whose work depends on a more expansive suite.

Key features

Tools for shaping a draft

The apps include word and character counts, custom writing targets, reading-time estimates, a table of contents, comments, and document tabs. These tools make it easier to track progress and move through longer work without leaving the editor. The browser version is a limited preview, so writers who rely on targets, backups, or version history need an app.

Import, export, and workspace controls

Word documents can be imported, and finished work exported to Word, PDF, Markdown, or HTML. Themes, adjustable fonts and layout, smart punctuation, optional typing sounds, and an OpenDyslexic mode provide useful ways to tailor the workspace. The formats cover common writing handoffs, but the overall emphasis remains on drafting rather than advanced document production.

Files and privacy

Desktop and Android apps edit offline and keep documents, backups, and previous versions on the device. Users can save files in Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive folders to sync them; Android can also open and save documents in Google Drive or Dropbox. The online editor saves documents in browser storage, and Calmly Studio says it does not store users' writing on its servers. That browser option is convenient for a quick edit, but it lacks several app features.

Pricing

Calmly Writer uses a freemium model. Calmly Writer Online is free and provides a limited subset of app features in a browser.

The Android app costs 16.99 USD per once, paid as a single purchase on Google Play with no subscription. It requires Android 7.0 or later and is a separate purchase from the desktop license. Android has no trial, but paid apps have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The desktop license has custom pricing and covers up to three computers. Calmly Writer Pro 3 desktop license is a pay-once purchase for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with future application updates included. The desktop app has a 14-day trial with all features enabled; the paid apps also carry a 30-day money-back guarantee. For someone who only needs occasional browser edits, the free option avoids a purchase but gives up app features. Writers who need offline work and the fuller toolset should consider an app; Android has a clear one-time price, while desktop pricing is custom.

Platforms

Calmly Writer is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and the web. Offline editing is supported in the desktop and Android apps, not the browser editor. Support requests and feature suggestions can be sent by email, Bluesky, or Reddit.

Who it's for

Calmly Writer is a good fit for solo writers who want a quiet workspace, offline access, and common export formats. Its Android purchase suits writers who want to draft on a phone or tablet, while the desktop app is the stronger choice for sustained writing and access to the full app feature set. The browser editor works for quick changes, but not for users who expect the complete writing toolkit online.

Pros and cons

Pros: Offline desktop and Android editing with local backups and version history gives writers access to work without depending on an internet connection.
Pros: Word import and Word, PDF, Markdown, and HTML export support practical movement between drafting and sharing.
Pros: Custom targets, reading time, document tabs, and a table of contents help manage longer drafts.
Cons: The browser editor is a limited preview, omitting tools such as backups, version history, writing targets, and PDF export.
Cons: The Android app is a separate purchase from desktop, and Android users do not get a trial.
Cons: Desktop pricing is custom, so buyers cannot compare its cost with the Android one-time purchase upfront.

Alternatives

Tencent Meeting & VooV Meeting is an alternative to consider.

Verdict

Choose Calmly Writer if you want a focused writing environment with offline desktop or Android apps, local file history, and straightforward exports. Its main advantage is pairing that writing-focused toolset with offline work; its main drawback is the limited browser experience and custom desktop pricing. If your workflow depends on collaboration or a fuller online editor, another option is likely a better fit.
