Overview

CanCred Factory is a cloud-based platform for organizations building programs around digital badges and certificates, with credentials verifiable against Open Badges 3.0. It is best suited to educators, trainers, employers, associations, non-profits, and communities that need structured badge pathways. Its strongest case is the combination of pathway design and integrations; the main trade-off is that usable badge capacity and support depend on the plan.

Key features

Organizations can create multilingual badges, add third-party endorsements, align badges with external frameworks, and use evidence-based application forms to collect supporting information. Those tools suit programs that need to document how a credential was earned, rather than simply issue a completion badge. Pro adds customizable PDF badges, so organizations that need that output must account for the higher subscription tier.

Nested milestone pathways support branching, with mandatory and elective steps. This gives program designers room to define different routes through a credential sequence; it is more relevant to multi-stage learning or recognition programs than to organizations issuing credentials without progression requirements.

Plugins are available for Moodle, Totara LMS, WordPress, Priima, ItsLearning, Canvas LMS, and D2L Brightspace. Canvas and Brightspace require Pro-level LTI integration, making those connections a material plan consideration. Developers can also use the documented Open RESTful API to build plugins; LTI services are at Pro level.

Digital credentials support public verification, expiry management, and custom branding. CanCred Passport, a free companion portfolio available on web, iOS, and Android, gives badge earners a place to store and share badges. The maker says the technology is hosted in Canada and respects Canadian and European Union privacy laws.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 CAD per free and allows a two-badge library, up to 5,000 badges per year and 50 per day, with no onboarding or support. That annual issuance quota may be ample for a small program, but the two-badge library sharply limits how many distinct credentials it can maintain.

Basic costs 495.00 CAD per year, billed $ 495 CAD / year. It raises the library to 10 badges while retaining the Free plan's 5,000 annual and 50 daily issuance limits; onboarding and support are limited. It suits organizations that need a modest set of badge types, but not a higher-volume program.

Premium costs 1295.00 CAD per year, billed $ 1,295 CAD / year. It includes an unlimited badge library, 15,000 badges per year, 500 per day, standard support, and +10,000 badges at no cost. The larger daily allowance and extra annual badges make it a better fit for organizations issuing at scale, though it still caps the base annual quota.

Pro costs 2365.00 CAD per year, billed $ 2,365 CAD / year. It includes an unlimited library, 50,000 badges per year, 2,000 per day, priority support, and +45,000 badges at no cost. It is the tier to consider for high-volume issuance, priority support, customizable PDFs, or Pro-level LTI; smaller programs may not need its higher capacity.

A 60-day trial runs at Pro level. After it ends, an account without a paid subscription lapses to Free, so its usable library becomes limited to two badges. Badges issued during or after the trial remain hosted and verifiable indefinitely, with a guarantee of at least two years. Support rises from none on Free to limited on Basic, standard on Premium, and priority on Pro.

Platforms

CanCred Factory is available on web and supports Android, iOS, and API access. CanCred Passport, the recipient portfolio, is available on web, iOS, and Android.

Who it's for

CanCred Factory is a strong fit for organizations that issue Open Badges 3.0 credentials and need pathways, endorsements, evidence collection, or connections to learning platforms. Free and Basic can serve smaller programs with low daily issuance and a short badge library. Organizations that need an unlimited library, higher issuance ceilings, stronger support, or Pro-level integrations should weigh Premium and Pro against their volumes and budget.

Pros and cons

Pros: Open Badges 3.0 credentials can be publicly verified, and the platform supports certificates, expiry management, and custom branding.
Pros: Branching pathways, endorsements, external framework alignments, and evidence-based applications support more structured credential programs.
Pros: A documented API and plugins for several learning platforms provide routes to connect existing systems; the free Passport portfolio gives earners a way to store and share badges.
Cons: Free has no support or onboarding and permits only two usable badges in its library, making it restrictive for organizations maintaining multiple credentials.
Cons: Canvas and Brightspace LTI integration requires Pro, and customizable PDF badges are also a Pro feature.
Cons: Basic keeps the same annual and daily issuance limits as Free, while meaningful capacity increases start at Premium.

Alternatives

Choose Certopus if a free plan centered on 250 credentials, two events, and one limited seat better matches a smaller issuing operation.

POK may suit teams prioritizing unlimited digital credentials with no user caps or setup fees on its Free Web2 plan.

CertSeal offers a free plan capped at 100 certificates per year, with one batch, one organization member, and one workspace.

Certifier offers a free Starter plan capped at 250 credentials per year for one user, with five credential templates and three forms.

Openbadges.me offers a free Starter plan for up to 10 badge recipients.

Sertifier may be a fit for teams wanting unlimited credentials for up to 25 recipients on its free plan.

IssueBadge offers 20 free credits without an expiring trial.

Open Badge Factory is another option for organizations considering an annual badge-platform license.

Verdict

CanCred Factory is best for organizations that need a verifiable Open Badges 3.0 program with branching pathways and integrations to established learning systems. Its tiered capacity and support make it practical to start small and expand, but the two-badge Free library and Pro-gated LTI features are real constraints. Choose it when those program tools matter; look elsewhere if your priority is a broader free credential allowance or avoiding annual capacity tiers.
