Overview

Cecil turns Markdown pages with front matter and media into static websites. Content stays in flat files, while Twig templates and themes shape the presentation. That separation gives developers control over design without tying content to a database. The trade-off is a command-line build process: authors need to manage files and generate the site rather than edit through a hosted interface.

The published output has no database or server-side script execution during visits. That reduces operational dependencies and avoids vulnerabilities associated with dynamic PHP on the live site. Cecil also automates pagination, sitemaps, redirects, robots.txt, taxonomies, and RSS, covering useful publishing needs without requiring each item to be assembled manually.

Key features

Incremental builds and a local preview server support iterative work. Multilingual content localization and template translation make Cecil a better fit for sites that publish across languages than a generator without built-in localization support.

Image processing can produce responsive WebP and AVIF files and compress them to reduce load time. SEO helpers generate Open Graph tags, Twitter cards, and structured data. Starter kits for a blog, a Linktree alternative, a self-hosted photo stream, and a documentation site provide starting structures, though they do not change the underlying file-based workflow.

Deployment recipes cover Netlify, Vercel, statichost, GitHub Pages, GitLab CI, and Surge. Cloudflare Pages and Render are poor fits for this workflow because their documentation says they no longer support PHP.

Pricing

Cecil's Free software plan is free. It is distributed under the EUPL-1.2 license, and no usage limits are stated. There is no free trial because the software itself is free. This suits individual creators and teams willing to operate their own build and deployment workflow; it does not include a hosted editing service.

Platforms

Cecil supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. It requires PHP 8.2 or later. Installation options include Homebrew on macOS, Scoop on Windows, and a downloaded PHAR file on Linux; PHIVE and manual installation are also supported. The PHP requirement is a meaningful setup constraint, especially for users who do not already work in a PHP environment.

Who it's for

Cecil is a strong fit for creators who value performance and want control over templates, themes, and content structure, particularly when localization or image optimization matters. Developers building blogs, documentation, or other publishing sites can use its starter kits and generated publishing assets to avoid repetitive setup.

It is less suitable for people who want to write and publish entirely in a browser or avoid command-line tools. Teams should also confirm that their preferred deployment platform supports the PHP-based build workflow.

Pros and cons

Pros: Flat-file Markdown content and static output avoid a database and server-side execution on the published site.
Pros: Image conversion, compression, SEO helpers, localization, and generated publishing assets cover several common site needs in one workflow.
Pros: Free software is available across Linux, macOS, and Windows, with multiple installation routes.
Cons: Building from the command line and editing files is a poor match for users who want a hosted visual editor.
Cons: PHP 8.2 or later is required, and Cloudflare Pages and Render no longer support PHP.

Alternatives

Static site generators is a useful starting point for comparing this category. Consider Gatsby if its open-source framework or separate free plan—with a 300-credit monthly limit and unlimited deploy previews—better matches your needs. Eleventy is another free, self-hosted static-site generator, distributed under the MIT license.

Nanoc is a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Bridgetown is another free choice with Linux, macOS, Windows, self-hosted, and API platforms. Hugo may suit readers looking for a free, open-source generator across Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Metalsmith offers free software under MIT/(L)GPL licenses, while Zola is free and distributed as a single executable. Lume is a free static-site generator for Deno.

Verdict

Choose Cecil if you want a free, PHP-based static-site workflow with Twig design flexibility, localization, and useful publishing and image-generation tools. Its static output is a clear advantage for performance-focused sites, but the command-line model and PHP 8.2 requirement make it the wrong choice for browser-only editing or setups that depend on a deployment platform that no longer supports PHP.
