Overview

Cloud Logging covers log storage, search, analysis, and alerting in a cloud deployment. Google Cloud platform logs arrive without setup, GKE workload logs are captured automatically, and the Ops Agent collects VM workload logs. That is useful for teams already running those workloads, but organizations requiring self-hosted deployment should look elsewhere.

Logs Explorer supports query-based searching, sorting, histograms, field exploration, and saved queries. Log Analytics adds SQL analysis through BigQuery, where logs can also be correlated with other business data. This pairing serves both operators investigating incidents and analysts exploring broader patterns, without a charge for SQL queries or upgrading a log bucket.

Key features

Collection and integrations: Automatic ingestion for Google Cloud and GKE logs reduces setup for common sources; the Ops Agent covers VM workloads. Integration with Cloud Monitoring, Error Reporting, and Cloud Trace helps teams troubleshoot across services.
Routing and archiving: Logs Router sends logs to destinations including external systems through Pub/Sub, and Cloud Storage supports archiving. Router itself is free, but destination charges may apply, so export-heavy workflows need to account for downstream costs.
Regional storage: Regional log buckets keep and process workload data in a selected region, with customizable access control and retention. This offers useful control over where logs are handled, though longer retention has a separate charge.
Audit records: Cloud Audit Logs captures administrative activity and resource access, and entries are immutable. Audit logs have 400 days of retention at no additional cost, but viewing them requires appropriate IAM permissions; the Logs Viewer role alone does not grant access to Data Access audit logs in the _Default bucket.
Operational basics: The service supports live log tailing, structured log parsing, log pipelines, and archive export. Its stated retention baseline is 30 days, so teams needing longer access should budget for retention charges.

Pricing

Cloud Logging uses a freemium model. The first 50 GiB per project per month of standard logging storage is free; new Google Cloud customers also receive $300 in credits to spend on Cloud Logging. The listed 50 GB/day ingestion inclusion is a separate allowance, not a substitute for checking storage and retention charges.

Logging storage: 0.50 USD per once, a one-time charge for streaming logs into bucket storage, including up to 30 days of storage. The first 50 GiB per project per month is free, and querying and analyzing log data adds no charge.
Vended network logs storage: 0.25 USD per month, a one-time charge for streaming network telemetry logs into bucket storage, including up to 30 days of storage.
Retention beyond the default period: 0.01 USD per month, billed monthly according to retention for logs kept more than 30 days. The default period has no retention cost; the _Required bucket has fixed 400-day retention without retention charges.
Log Analytics and Logs Router: Both are 0.00 USD per free. SQL queries and upgrading a log bucket carry no charge, while routed-log destinations may still incur fees.

The free allotment makes the service accessible for modest volumes, but it does not erase ingestion or extended-retention costs as workloads grow. There are no seat limits or trial duration given; the product offers a free trial and directs customers needing help getting started to contact sales.

Platforms

Cloud Logging supports API, Linux, and web access. Deployment is cloud-based, which aligns with managed Google Cloud operations but rules out running the service on-premises or self-hosted.

Who it's for

Choose Cloud Logging if your workloads already run on Google Cloud and you want automatic collection from platform services, GKE, or VMs alongside search, SQL analysis, and monitoring integrations. It is also a fit for teams that need regional log storage or long-lived audit records. It is less suitable for organizations that require self-hosting or want predictable storage costs without tracking volume and retention.

Pros and cons

Pro: Google Cloud and GKE logs arrive automatically, reducing setup for common sources.
Pro: BigQuery-backed SQL analysis and correlation with business data extend log investigation beyond basic search.
Pro: Regional buckets and immutable audit records support controlled storage and audit workflows.
Con: Cloud-only deployment excludes teams that need a self-managed logging stack.
Con: Retention beyond 30 days and export destinations can add costs beyond the free storage allowance.
Con: Audit-log access depends on IAM permissions, and the Logs Viewer role is insufficient for Data Access audit logs in the _Default bucket.

Alternatives

Compare log management software if you want to survey the wider category before choosing a service.

ELK Stack is worth considering if you want a freemium stack with self-managed deployment options; its Basic plan covers self-managed Elastic Stack features.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Logging may suit teams looking for another cloud provider's logging service, with a free allowance covering 10 GB of log storage per month.
Oracle Log Analytics is another freemium logging option from Oracle.
Sumo Logic has a free plan with 20 daily credits for logs, metrics, and traces, seven-day retention, and up to three users; consider it for a small team with limited retention needs.
Elastic Observability is an alternative if you want an observability platform with self-hosted deployment options.
SolarWinds Loggly offers a free Lite tier with 200 MB per day, seven-day retention, and unlimited users; its Standard plan is 79.00 USD per month billed annually for 1 GB per day and 15-day retention.
VictoriaLogs is a free option with an open-source, single-node or cluster deployment under the Apache License 2.0.
Amazon CloudWatch Logs is a paid alternative with a free plan and usage-based ingestion pricing; its published first-tier rate is 0.50 USD per month for the first 10 TB per month in US East (N. Virginia), with rates varying by region and tier.

Verdict

Google Cloud Logging is a strong choice for teams operating in Google Cloud that want automatic log collection, BigQuery-backed analysis, and regional storage in a managed service. Its main advantage is the combination of platform-aware collection and flexible analysis; look elsewhere if self-hosting is essential or if extended retention and routed destinations make costs difficult to manage.
