Overview

Checkmk covers cloud, hybrid and data-center infrastructure, with monitoring for servers, services, virtual machines, networks and containers. Server monitoring spans web, mail and database systems, using more than 2,000 smart checks alongside automatic discovery and network mapping. That range makes it suitable for environments where a single monitoring method or operating-system family would leave gaps.

Teams can run Checkmk on customer hardware or in virtualized environments, with packages for major Linux distributions, Docker and a Virtual Appliance. One instance can monitor thousands of servers, and distributed monitoring supports horizontal scaling. These options suit growing deployments, but the free Community plan is aimed at smaller infrastructures and scales to approximately 100 hosts.

Key features

Different ways to collect data: Native agents support Windows, Linux and other operating systems; agentless SNMP and TCP/UDP checks provide an alternative where installing agents is impractical. API-based checks using HTTP/XML, SSH or TELNET add flexibility for varied systems.
Cloud monitoring: AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Platform coverage includes automatic detection of cloud components and Quick Setup. This makes Checkmk a practical option for teams that need cloud visibility alongside on-premises monitoring.
Integrations and automation: Community includes more than 2,000 built-in integrations, with REST APIs and custom automation scripts also supported. The breadth is useful for connecting varied infrastructure, though teams with specialized needs may still need to build scripts.
Distributed scale: A single instance can monitor thousands of servers, while distributed monitoring allows horizontal expansion. That offers room to grow beyond Community's approximate 100-host scope.
Security architecture and assurance: Ultimate provides zero-inbound, fully encrypted monitoring through push agents and Checkmk Relay. The Trust Center carries ISO 27001:2022, SOC 2 Type I, GDPR, SIG, EU AI Act and DORA badges; organizations should assess these against their own compliance requirements.

Pricing

Checkmk has a freemium model: Community is free, paid plans start at €190/mo (annual), and a 30-day trial is offered. The published plan prices below are in USD, so compare them with the euro starting price in the context of the plan and billing term.

Plan	Price and billing	What it includes	Best fit
Community	0.00 USD per free, forever	More than 2,000 pre-built integrations, up to approximately 100 hosts and community support	Small infrastructures that can operate within the host scale and rely on community support.
Synthetic Monitoring	0.00 USD per month, billed annually	$0.00/test and 3 free tests; available with Pro and Ultimate	Pro or Ultimate customers who need the included synthetic tests; it is not a standalone plan.
Pro	275.00 USD per month, billed annually	From $275/month, as low as ~$2.75/host per month, equivalent to ~3,000 services; professional support 8h x 5d	Teams needing paid capacity and weekday professional support.
Cloud	290.00 USD per month, billed monthly	~$8.70/host per month, 1 host = ~30 services, 1K–50K services and 99.5% availability	Teams that prefer monthly billing and need the stated service range and availability commitment.
Ultimate	400.00 USD per month, billed annually	From $400/month, as low as ~$4.00/host per month, equivalent to ~3,000 services; professional support 10h x 5d, with an upgrade to 24h x 5d	Organizations that need the Ultimate security architecture or broader support coverage.

Community's free access comes with an approximate 100-host ceiling and community rather than professional support, making it a limited choice for larger operations. Pro and Ultimate state capacity in services as well as a per-host equivalent; those figures matter when comparing workloads, since one host can represent many monitored services. Cloud has a distinct monthly term and a 1K–50K service range. The 30-day trial gives prospective users a bounded evaluation period.

Platforms

Checkmk supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows. Its hybrid deployment model, multiple-OS coverage and agentless monitoring give teams flexibility across managed infrastructure and systems where they cannot install agents.

Who it's for

Checkmk is a strong fit for IT teams monitoring a mix of servers, networks, virtual machines and cloud resources, particularly when they need both agent-based and agentless collection. Its deployment flexibility and distributed scaling also suit organizations that expect infrastructure to grow. Community is the sensible starting point for small environments; teams beyond its approximate 100-host scope or needing professional support should consider a paid plan.

It is less suitable for a small operation that needs a larger free allowance or for a buyer who wants support coverage beyond the stated Pro and Ultimate schedules without checking the available upgrade terms. Pro offers 8h x 5d professional support, while Ultimate includes 10h x 5d and can be upgraded to 24h x 5d.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 2,000 checks and integrations, plus agent, agentless and API collection, can cover varied infrastructure without forcing one monitoring approach.
Pro: Cloud coverage for AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Platform includes automatic component detection and Quick Setup, reducing the need to treat cloud monitoring as a separate environment.
Pro: Customer-managed and virtualized deployment, with distributed scaling, gives larger teams options as their monitored estate expands.
Con: Community is scoped to approximately 100 hosts and provides community support, so it may not carry a growing organization very far without moving to a paid plan.
Con: Paid plans differ in billing terms, service capacity and support windows, so choosing by headline monthly price alone risks a poor fit.

Alternatives

For a wider shortlist, compare Checkmk with Infrastructure Monitoring, Cloud Monitoring, Metrics Monitoring Tools, Container Monitoring, Hardware Monitoring Software and Managed Service Provider Software.

Breeze is worth considering for a self-hosted free plan with unlimited devices and all 64 modules, provided bringing an Anthropic key is acceptable.
ManageEngine MSP Central may suit buyers seeking paid network-device monitoring and management priced per device.
Atera is another paid option with unlimited endpoints on its Pro plan and two concurrent Splashtop sessions.
Pulseway may fit buyers who want configurable endpoint, MDM and security options with monthly, annual or three-year terms.
Site24x7 MSP is another paid alternative with a free trial.
Hudu offers a paid plan at 30.00 USD per month with no user minimums, making it a possible fit for buyers prioritizing that pricing structure.
Liongard is a paid alternative whose LiongardIQ plan includes 105+ integrations and an 18-month configuration change history.
ManageEngine Endpoint Central may be preferable for endpoint management, with a free edition capped at 25 endpoints and a Professional on-premises annual plan at 795.00 USD per year for 50 endpoints and one technician.

Verdict

Choose Checkmk if you need broad, scalable monitoring across mixed infrastructure and want a choice between customer-managed deployment and virtualized environments. Its strongest reason to buy is the combination of diverse collection methods, extensive integrations and cloud coverage. Look elsewhere if Community's approximate 100-host scope is too restrictive and the paid plans' service capacity, billing terms or support schedules do not match your operation.
