Overview

ChordU is a song-analysis and practice tool for players who want chord recognition, notation, and instrument diagrams in one place. It is best suited to people learning or arranging songs from audio or YouTube; its free plan is a way in, while uploads and MusicOnly on local files require Premium.

Its range of chord and note views makes it more useful than a single-result chord lookup. The trade-off is that personal, non-commercial use is the limit, and musicians who need local-file analysis on a free plan should look elsewhere.

Key features

Chord recognition and song search

ChordU recognizes chords from audio and syncs them to generate notation. For YouTube songs, users find the song on YouTube, copy its link, and search for it in ChordU. That gives players two routes into a song, though the YouTube workflow requires switching between services.

Users can choose simplified, advanced, bass, or edited chord versions. This is useful for comparing arrangements or finding a playable level rather than being locked into a single chord display. Treble- and bass-clef note versions, including simple, music, and bass notes, provide additional ways to follow a part.

Practice and exports

Chord diagrams cover guitar, piano, ukulele, and mandolin, and chord audio playback connects the displayed information to sound. A progression generator and voicing explorer are also available for exploring harmonic ideas beyond a particular song.

MusicOnly controls vocals, bass, drums, and instruments, and can export a mixed audio download. On the website, users can download PDF chord and note sheets, MIDI files, and synthesized notes as WAV. The breadth of formats is useful for different practice and arranging workflows, but local music uploads and MusicOnly for those uploads are Premium features.

ChordU supports Android, iOS, and web use. It says sensitive information is encrypted with SSL and transactions go through a payment gateway rather than being stored on its servers. Users can request data deletion by email, with processing taking up to seven days. Help documentation, sales, technical support, and media-inquiry contacts are provided.

Pricing

ChordU uses a freemium model. Free is free and offers limited access features. It is the sensible starting point for song lookup and trying the service, but local uploads and MusicOnly on those uploads are excluded, and the free plan does not include the Premium promise of chord downloads without a stated monthly limit.

Premium costs 5.00 USD per month, billed $ 5.00/Month. It includes all ChordU features, uploads, MusicOnly mode, and downloads. This is the plan for musicians who need to analyze local files or make use of the full audio and download workflow. Song and chord use remains personal and non-commercial under ChordU's terms.

Starter has custom pricing. It includes paid features but excludes song uploads and notes/MIDI downloads, making it a narrower paid option for users who do not need those capabilities. The stated plan details do not establish a seat count or trial term.

Platforms

ChordU is available on web, Android, and iOS. The web offering includes PDF, MIDI, and WAV downloads; the listed mobile apps extend access to iOS and Android users.

Who it's for

ChordU suits players who want to work through songs with multiple chord arrangements, note displays, instrument diagrams, and playback, especially when they also need downloadable materials. It is less suitable for anyone whose workflow depends on local uploads without paying, or whose song use is commercial.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple chord versions and clef-based note views let players compare parts and choose an appropriate level of detail.
Pros: Guitar, piano, ukulele, and mandolin diagrams, plus chord playback, make the results relevant across several instruments.
Pros: PDF, MIDI, and WAV downloads support different uses, and Premium chord downloads have no stated monthly limit.
Cons: Local uploads and MusicOnly for uploaded files require Premium, limiting the free workflow for users who bring their own audio.
Cons: Song and chord use is restricted to personal, non-commercial purposes, ruling it out for commercial use.
Cons: Starter excludes uploads and notes/MIDI downloads, so it is not a substitute for Premium when those are central to the workflow.

Alternatives

Chord Finder Software is a useful place to compare other chord-finding options. Choose OtoTheory if an iOS-focused tool with a free trial and a one-time Lifetime plan is a better fit; its free tier limits local sketch saves to three and does not include MIDI/audio export. Chordio is worth considering for iOS or macOS users who want built-in sounds, an on-screen keyboard, and real-time MIDI chord detection in its free download.

Tonaly is another iOS and macOS option, with free trial access and one-time in-app purchases for scales and PDF lead-sheet export. Pick Chord ai if Android or iOS chord recognition is the priority; its free plan states unlimited use, while Pro costs 9.00 USD per month. Harmony Pro is a free alternative for macOS, Windows, or web.

HarmonyBuilder is the alternative to consider for Linux, macOS, or Windows four-part score writing, with a Basic plan at 14.00 USD per month. Chord Analyser is an Android and iOS option whose free plan has no time limit and no ads. ChordSequence is a free Android and web choice if all features and WAV and MIDI export without a paywall are the deciding factors.

Verdict

ChordU is a strong fit for players who want song recognition, several chord and notation views, instrument diagrams, and downloadable practice materials together. Its clearest reason to choose Premium is local-file uploads and MusicOnly, while the strongest reasons to look elsewhere are commercial-use needs or a requirement for upload-based tools without a subscription.
