Overview

Members appear on a live map refreshed every eight seconds, useful for checking arrivals or coordinating trips. Joining happens through an invite link, and the recipient must agree before being added. Visibility is controlled per circle, while the privacy bubble shows a general neighborhood rather than an exact address. These controls make CircleUs a better fit for families with teenagers and adults who want reassurance without default precision tracking.

Location data is end-to-end encrypted, not sold or used for advertising, and can be exported or deleted in app settings. Adaptive GPS checks more often during movement and slows when someone is stationary, helping reduce needless battery activity. Gold history is retained for 30 days and then deleted, so it is suited to recent context rather than long-term records.

Key features

Location and alerts

Place alerts notify a circle when a member arrives at or leaves a saved location. Three alerts on Free cover a few routine destinations; larger households will value Gold's unlimited alerts. Free also allows up to five members and two circles, enough for a small family but restrictive for extended households or multiple groups.

Emergency and driving tools

One-tap SOS alerts circle members and can contact emergency services with live GPS coordinates. That is a meaningful advantage when speed matters, although it remains a response tool rather than a substitute for broader emergency planning. Gold adds crash detection with 911 dispatch, plus drive reports covering speed, phone use, hard braking and a score after each trip. Drivers who want feedback on habits get more than simple location sharing; users who only need an occasional map may not justify the upgrade.

Elder-care mode

Gold can learn daily routines, flag unusual inactivity, monitor battery and send check-in pings. It is aimed at caregivers who need a lightweight way to notice deviations, while families wanting only voluntary check-ins can stay on Free.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What you get
Free Forever	Free	Up to 5 members, 3 place alerts, 2 circles, real-time location, SOS, temporary sharing and privacy bubble
Gold	9.00 USD per month billed annually; $14 monthly	Unlimited members and alerts, crash detection with 911 dispatch, drive score and safety reports, 30-day history, elder-care monitoring, AI smart alerts and routines

The free tier is a credible starting point for a small family, but its member, circle and alert ceilings are the practical trade-off. Gold is the plan for larger groups and for driving or caregiving workflows. A seven-day trial is offered. Gold cancellation is handled through the App Store or Google Play; access continues through the billing period, then the account returns to Free. Compare the annual commitment with the $14 monthly rate before subscribing.

Platforms

CircleUs runs on Android and iOS, covering the two major mobile ecosystems. A household can therefore include both platforms, but no web or desktop app is provided.

Who it's for

Choose CircleUs for families, teens and adults who want explicit consent, adjustable precision and encrypted sharing alongside SOS. It also fits drivers needing post-trip safety metrics and caregivers watching for unusual inactivity. It is less suitable for groups needing permanent historical records, desktop access or a free plan larger than five members.

Pros and cons

Pro: Consent is built in. Invitation and agreement are required before someone joins a circle.
Pro: Privacy controls are unusually practical. The bubble can show a neighborhood instead of an address, with visibility set by circle.
Pro: Safety depth. SOS, live coordinates, crash response, driving reports and elder-care routines cover more than basic location sharing.
Con: Free limits are tight for growing families. Five members, two circles and three alerts can force an upgrade.
Con: History is short. Gold deletes location history after 30 days.
Con: Mobile-only coverage. There is no web or desktop option for people who manage from a computer.

Alternatives

See the Family Locator Apps guide for broader comparisons. Family Locator is a better pick if you want complete functionality free or a $14.99 one-time Lifetime upgrade, and need macOS support. Choose Findmykids when web access and child-focused movement notifications matter; its free Básico plan includes current location, one movement notification and three superseñales.

iSharing suits users who prefer a free 1-place-alert tier with seven-day history and a driving report after watching an ad. OtoZen is an alternative for Android and iOS users seeking a free driving-focused plan with two days of drive history. Be Closer offers free real-time location and a $3.99 monthly Premium tier with unlimited history. BuddySOS is the low-cost choice for a basic group and safe-zone setup, with Pro at $1.99 per month. Familo provides basic free family location features. Glympse is worth considering when web, API and technician or driver workflows are more important than family-circle controls.

Verdict

CircleUs is a strong choice for privacy-conscious families that want consent-based sharing, dependable SOS and optional driving or elder-care features in one mobile app. Start with Free if five members and three alerts cover your routine; choose Gold for unlimited circles' membership and alerts or its specialist safety tools. Look elsewhere if you need desktop access, a longer location archive or a permanently free plan for a large household.
