Overview

LexNebulis is a self-hosted legal practice platform for small firms, with matter management and trust accounting in the same system. It suits firms prepared to operate their own Linux server; the no-cost software comes with deployment and upkeep responsibilities.

Its scope reaches from client records and documents to calendars, time tracking, billing, and client-facing workflows. Firms looking for hosted software or a vendor-managed setup should consider another option.

Key features

Alongside client and matter management, LexNebulis provides conflict checking, client intake, document templates and generation, e-signatures, and a client portal. That breadth can reduce the need to separate routine legal workflows from billing and account administration.

Billing supports LEDES 1998B and 2000 export, UTBMS codes, and electronic invoice submission. Trust-accounting capabilities include matter-level billing, client ledgers, three-way reconciliation, and compliance reporting—a meaningful fit for firms that need those workflows together rather than a general-purpose accounting tool.

Integrations cover Stripe and LawPay for payments, QuickBooks and CSV for accounting exports, and Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, and OneDrive for storage. The platform also lists OIDC and SAML 2.0 single sign-on, SCIM 2.0 provisioning, and SIEM export via webhooks and syslog, which may matter to firms with centralized identity and monitoring requirements.

Security features include encryption at rest and in transit, bcrypt password hashing, JWT authentication, and TOTP or WebAuthn/FIDO2 two-factor authentication. Its append-only audit log uses SHA-256 hash chaining to make changes to the log detectable. These are substantial security mechanisms, but firms still need to manage the server and its maintenance.

The API documentation is available at /api/docs on a running instance. That offers a reference point for teams planning API-based work, though firms must first deploy the application.

Pricing

LexNebulis offers a Free, open-source plan at Free, self-hosted under Apache License 2.0. The repository says it is free for commercial use, making it an unusually direct option for firms able to supply their own infrastructure and administration.

There is no paid tier described. The trade-off is operational rather than a stated seat or feature cap: firms need to provide and maintain a suitable server. The project targets small firms with 1 to 50 users, but that target is not a promise of capacity for every deployment.

Platforms

LexNebulis is a web application and supports API access, Linux, and self-hosted deployment. The installation guide calls for a Linux server, recommending Ubuntu 22.04 or later; macOS is specified for development. Docker and Docker Compose v2 are required, along with at least 2 GB RAM and 10 GB disk space. Those prerequisites make it a better fit for firms with technical support than for teams seeking a turnkey hosted service.

Who it's for

Small law firms that want practice management, billing, and trust accounting together—and can take responsibility for self-hosting—are the clearest fit. Firms with identity-management needs may also value its listed SSO, provisioning, and SIEM integrations.

It is less suitable for firms without server administration capacity or those that require a hosted service. The stated audience is firms with 1 to 50 users, so larger organizations should assess their deployment needs before choosing it.

Pros and cons

Pros: Core matter work, legal workflows, billing, and trust accounting sit in one platform, including three-way reconciliation and compliance reporting.
Pros: Apache 2.0 licensing and commercial-use permission make the software free to use, while payment, accounting, storage, identity, and monitoring integrations cover several common operational needs.
Cons: Self-hosting requires Docker, Docker Compose v2, a Linux server, and minimum hardware resources; the firm is responsible for deployment and maintenance.
Cons: The installation guidance centers on Ubuntu 22.04 or later, with macOS mentioned for development rather than production deployment.

Alternatives

For a small firm that wants a bounded free plan on macOS or Windows, Tussman Program offers a free version capped at 5 clients and 10 matters, with a paid full program available by contacting Tussman. Choose it if those desktop platforms and limits fit better than self-hosting.

BarBooks is a paid option with a free trial and support across mobile, desktop, and web platforms; consider it when broader device coverage matters. For a priced monthly alternative with trust accounting and ledgers, CosmoLex starts at 49.00 USD per month per user on its Launch plan, which also includes time tracking, invoicing, and online payments.

Account Legal offers a 19.94 USD per month plan with unlimited access, multiple trust accounts, unlimited clients, and downloadable client and account reports. It may suit firms prioritizing those account limits and reports. For a trust-accounting product with explicit user and bank-account tiers, IOLTA Guard starts at 99.00 USD per month for one user and one bank account, with a 199.00 USD per month tier for three users and three accounts.

Lexis+ uses organization-specific pricing and supports Android, iOS, and web, so it is an alternative for firms seeking a subscription tailored to their organization. Orion ePay is another paid option across mobile, desktop, and web platforms, with pricing available by contacting Orion. For document-management needs, PerfectLaw DMS offers subscription and on-premises options, including a web subscription with 200 GB storage.

Verdict

Choose LexNebulis if your small firm wants an integrated legal practice and trust-accounting system without a software charge, and has the technical capacity to run and maintain it. Its breadth and commercial-use license are compelling; firms that need hosted service or hands-off deployment should look elsewhere.
