Overview

Clearbrief is legal-writing software built around Microsoft Word and the evidentiary record behind a document. It is best suited to litigators and legal teams that need to verify and organize facts while drafting. Its clearest advantage is linking claims to support; the main trade-off for an individual buyer is a $300/user/mo starting price for paid use.

Key features

Drafting and fact-checking

Analyze and Add Fact-Cite help users check claims against source documents and locate supporting evidence. Clickable citations connect a written claim to its backing material, making it easier to trace assertions in legal writing. That focus is valuable when accuracy and evidentiary support matter, but does not make Clearbrief a general-purpose writing assistant.

Organizing case materials

Table Builder, timelines, and summaries help find, extract, and assemble facts from document sets. The product also offers AI-generated investigation reports with hyperlinked citations, Tables of Authorities, exhibits, and hyperlinked filings. These tools extend its use from drafting into trial preparation, particularly for work built around documentary evidence.

Integrations and data controls

Clearbrief describes integrations with LexisNexis, Fastcase vLex, Clio, iManage, Relativity, and PACER. Its Bring Your Own Storage option lets organizations keep documents in their own cloud. Clearbrief states that it is SOC 2 Type 2 certified, does not use customer data to train large language models, and lets customers control if and how generative AI is used. Those controls may matter to organizations assessing how legal documents are handled.

Pricing

Clearbrief uses a freemium model with a free trial and three plans. The free Law Students plan is free and is intended for law students. It provides an entry point for students, while the available plan information does not describe its feature limits.

Solo costs $300/month per user. Multi-year agreements may have lower pricing. This is the paid option for individual users, but its per-user monthly price makes it a substantial commitment for a solo practitioner comparing drafting tools. Enterprise Unlimited has custom pricing, with volume discounts available and 1:1 training for responsible AI use included. It is the plan aimed at larger organizations; the price must be tailored to the organization.

Platforms

Clearbrief is available on the web and Windows. Its Windows MSI installer launches the add-in from Microsoft Word, aligning the desktop option with its drafting workflow. Technical support is available by email at hello@clearbrief.ai.

Who it's for

Clearbrief says it is used by litigators, in-house legal teams, courts, government agencies, arbitrators, and boutique firms. It is most compelling for people who draft legal documents from source materials and need to verify, organize, or present the facts in those materials. Readers seeking software for work outside legal drafting and case preparation should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Clickable citations and fact-checking tools connect claims to source documents, supporting traceability during legal drafting.
Pros: Timelines, summaries, tables, and linked reports help turn document sets into materials for case preparation.
Pros: Bring Your Own Storage and stated AI controls give organizations options over document storage and generative AI use.
Cons: Solo costs $300/month per user, a high starting point for individual paid use.
Cons: The product's focus on legal writing and evidence makes it a poor fit for general-purpose drafting.

Verdict

Clearbrief is a strong fit for litigators and legal teams whose drafting depends on checking claims against a documentary record. Its linked citations and case-preparation tools are the reason to choose it; the $300/month per-user Solo price is the reason many individual buyers should compare alternatives first.
