Overview

CloudTax combines self-guided preparation with review and “done for you” services. That gives a straightforward filer a no-cost route while preserving an upgrade path when a return needs professional attention. CloudTax has been CRA-certified since the 2018 tax year, and completed returns are sent through NETFILE.

It is a Canadian product from a Toronto-based company, with tax data encrypted on secure servers. CloudTax says information is shared with the CRA only when a user submits through NETFILE. Refunds typically arrive within two to 12 weeks; NETFILE refunds are usually around two weeks.

Key features

Support for self-employment, investment and rental income, together with state filing, makes CloudTax more capable than software restricted to uncomplicated employment returns. Those categories can still involve difficult tax questions, so the self-guided workflow is best reserved for users who understand their obligations or are comfortable paying for review or preparation.

CRA slip imports reduce manual entry. Users can also scan or upload documents and have AI extract and auto-fill the information. Koinly supports crypto-tax workflows, while CloudReceipts captures, categorizes and manages receipts and syncs expenses for deduction tracking. These tools are particularly useful when income and deductible costs arrive across many documents.

Support spans live chat, email, video tutorials and tax experts. Plus includes priority support and audit protection, extending its value beyond a higher return quota. CloudTax also offers an API for embedding filing and tax insights in fintech, banking and financial-service platforms, a capability aimed at businesses rather than ordinary filers.

Pricing

CloudTax Free: Free, billed free forever. Users can pay what they want, even $0, for self-guided filing with basic tax-return support. The allowance is up to two returns, and the plan is intended for simple tax situations. It is the sensible starting point for a straightforward individual return, but not for a household needing more than two filings or for cases that require professional review.

CloudTax Plus: 39.00 USD per year on an annual subscription. It raises the allowance to 20 returns from one dashboard and adds priority support, audit protection and CloudReceipts Personal. This is the better fit for families, preparers or anyone filing several returns; it is less compelling if you need only one simple return and do not value the added support and protection.

Per-return assistance is priced higher. Review & File Basic, Premium and Business cost 75.00, 125.00 and 149.00 USD per month respectively, each with two returns. Done For You Basic, Premium and Business cost 99.00, 249.00 and 349.00 USD per month, also with two returns. These options suit users who want an expert review or preparation rather than a larger self-service quota. CloudTax says excess accidental payments will be refunded.

Additional per-return offerings include Business Review at $149 for self-employed and business income with T2125 support; Premium Review at $99 for more complex returns including rental and foreign income; Premium Done For You at $149 for rental property, partnership, emigrant and final tax returns; and Business Done For You at $249 for full business or self-employment preparation, excluding T2. These have custom pricing, with the stated per-return charges applying as described.

Platforms

CloudTax provides web and mobile access through iOS and Android devices. That combination suits people who collect documents or check filing progress away from a desktop, while the browser option remains available for longer preparation sessions.

Who it's for

Choose CloudTax Free for a simple return when two-return capacity is enough. Choose Plus when one dashboard for up to 20 returns, priority support, audit protection and receipt management justify the annual fee. Self-employed users, investors, landlords and crypto users benefit from the relevant income support and integrations, but should consider review or preparation for complicated situations. Businesses can use the API or business-focused service tiers; ordinary filers should not pay for those options.

Pros and cons

Pro: Self-employment, investment and rental income support covers more than basic employment returns.
Pro: CRA imports, AI document extraction, Koinly and CloudReceipts can reduce transcription and deduction-tracking work.
Pro: Free filing, a 20-return Plus subscription and per-return expert services cover distinct needs.
Con: Free is limited to two simple returns, so more involved cases quickly require a paid tier.
Con: Done-for-you services cost substantially more than self-guided filing and still list two returns.
Con: The many service tiers make comparing the right level of assistance essential.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Personal Tax Software.

Pick WISO Steuer instead if you need Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows coverage, with a free test version that charges when you submit. H&R Block Online is an alternative for simple Form 1040 returns through web, iOS and Android, while TaxAct offers free federal filing for eligible standard returns with state filing additional. TaxSlayer provides a free tier covering one federal and one state return. TaxDown offers a free calculation and simulation, with submission requiring a plan. TurboTax has a free edition for eligible simple Form 1040 returns. FreeTaxUSA is another web, Android and iOS option with federal and state filing plans. ClearTax provides web-based self e-filing and paid plans for specific taxpayer profiles.

Verdict

CloudTax is a strong choice for Canadian filers who want mobile and web access, broad income-type support and a clear route from free self-filing to expert review or preparation. Choose it especially when CRA integrations, receipt tools or up to 20 annual returns matter. Look elsewhere if your return is outside its supported Canadian workflow, or if a simpler competitor's free allowance better matches a basic one-off filing.
