Overview

cnc-ddraw is a free compatibility layer for classic 2D games that use DirectDraw. It is best suited to players dealing with display problems in those titles; its focused toolkit is worthwhile, but it cannot help games that rely on Direct3D instead.

It reimplements DirectDraw at runtime to address issues including black screens, crashes, poor performance, and unreliable Alt+Tab behavior. The game must provide a DirectDraw software renderer. The project names many compatible classics, but the list is incomplete and not usually updated, so an absent title is not necessarily incompatible.

Key features

Rendering options include GDI, OpenGL, and Direct3D 9, with automatic renderer selection. That gives older games several rendering paths to try, while keeping configuration simple for users who do not want to choose manually. It does not remove the requirement that the game itself use DirectDraw software rendering.

Windowed, fullscreen-exclusive, and borderless modes make it easier to fit a game into a modern desktop. Alt+Enter switches between fullscreen and windowed play. GLSL shader upscaling offers a way to enlarge the image, while an FPS limiter and VSync provide basic frame-rate and synchronization controls. Optional mouse-sensitivity scaling and automatic saving and restoration of window position, size, and state are useful refinements for games whose input or window behavior needs adjustment.

Pricing

cnc-ddraw is free, at Free. The MIT License permits use, copying, modification, distribution, sublicensing, and sale subject to its terms. There are no paid tiers or plan-based restrictions in the offering described.

Platforms

The project supports Windows ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, and 11, as well as Wine on Linux, macOS, and Android, and virtual machines. For a Windows game folder, setup is direct: download the ZIP, extract it into that folder, and start the game. Under Wine on Linux, macOS, or Android, users must override ddraw in winecfg or run cnc-ddraw config.exe once.

When a game will not start or crashes, the project asks users to generate and upload a debug log and points them to its wiki for title-specific setup steps. That route is useful for troubleshooting, though it may require more effort than installing a general-purpose game launcher.

Who it's for

Choose cnc-ddraw if an older 2D game has a DirectDraw software renderer and suffers from compatibility or display trouble on a supported environment. Its display modes, scaling, and runtime controls make it a practical, narrowly targeted fix. Skip it for Direct3D games or when the title's renderer is unknown and you need a solution that covers a broader range of games.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free MIT-licensed software with several renderers, multiple display modes, GLSL upscaling, and useful controls for older games.
Pros: Straightforward game-folder setup on Windows, with a separate configuration path for Wine environments.
Cons: Requires a DirectDraw software renderer and does not support Direct3D games, which rules out many titles.
Cons: The compatibility list is incomplete and not usually updated, so users may need to consult the wiki or submit debug logs when a game fails.

Alternatives

Game Compatibility Layers is a broader directory for comparing tools in this category. If you need a different platform focus or approach, these free options may fit better:

GameHub offers free platform access on Android, iOS, and macOS; cloud gaming and streaming require a stable network.
Sober is a free unofficial project for Linux desktop.
Bannerlator is free for Android, but compatibility varies by GPU, Android version, and game, with no guarantee on other devices or support commitment.
TDF is a free Linux and self-hosted option requiring an x86_64 CPU and a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 or newer.
Winlator is a free Android application for running Windows x86_64 applications.
DXVK is free for Linux and Windows and requires Vulkan; Linux/Wine use also needs a compatible Vulkan driver.
PlayOnLinux supports Linux and macOS, though not all games are supported and performance can occasionally decrease.
Porting Kit installs Windows games and apps on macOS using Wineskin.

Verdict

For players with a DirectDraw-based 2D game that misbehaves, cnc-ddraw is a strong first choice: it is free, focused, and combines rendering and display controls in one runtime layer. The decisive reason to look elsewhere is equally clear: it does not support Direct3D games.
