Overview

Code Search is a self-hosted platform for searching, navigating, and changing code across repositories. It is best suited to organizations managing large repository fleets that need to keep code and data on their own servers. Its main trade-off is clear: the Community plan is unusually broad, while single sign-on, repository-level permissions, and audit logs require Enterprise.

The project uses the Apache License 2.0. Its maker says the application sends no telemetry or usage data back to them, a useful fit for teams that prioritize control over where code-search infrastructure runs. For a broader shortlist, see Code Search Tools.

Key features

Search and code intelligence

Zoekt powers sub-second search across repositories, with regular-expression support and codebase indexing. SCIP adds go-to-definition, find-references, and symbol search, so the tool can help developers move from matching text to related code elements. That combination is more useful for navigating a large codebase than text matching alone.

Cross-repository changes

Code Search can find and replace across multiple repositories, then automatically create branches and merge requests. CLI support makes batch operations part of the workflow, which is a practical advantage for coordinated changes spanning a large fleet. Teams that only need occasional search in one repository may not need this breadth.

AI assistant connection

A built-in MCP server connects assistants such as Claude and Cursor to code search, browsing, and navigation. This extends access to existing search and navigation functions; it does not replace the platform's core repository indexing and change-management role.

Code hosts and deployment

Supported hosts include GitHub, GitHub Enterprise Server, GitLab, self-hosted GitLab, Gitea, and Bitbucket Cloud and Server. Installation options include Docker, source builds, Kubernetes, and Helm. This range suits teams with varied hosting environments, but self-hosting means the organization must choose and operate its deployment.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Community	0.00 USD per free	Unlimited users, full-text code search, cross-repository find and replace, CLI and MCP server, SCIP code intelligence, supported code-host integrations, horizontal scaling, and Docker and Kubernetes deployment.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Everything in Community, plus OIDC single sign-on, role-based repository permissions, audit logging, Ed25519 license management, priority support, custom user limits, and SLA.

Community is a substantial starting point: unlimited users and the core search, navigation, replacement, and deployment capabilities come at no cost. Organizations that need centralized identity, repository permissions, or records of searches, file access, and replace operations must move to Enterprise. Enterprise also adds priority support and custom user limits and SLA; Community support is through GitHub Issues.

Platforms

Code Search supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. Its deployment choices include Docker, source builds, Kubernetes, and Helm, giving infrastructure teams several ways to run it on their own systems.

Who it's for

Code Search is a strong fit for organizations that search and change code across hundreds or thousands of repositories, especially when self-hosting and broad free-plan access matter. Teams that need SSO, scoped repository access, auditability, or priority support should assess Enterprise. It is less compelling for users who want a hosted service or only need a lightweight search tool for a small number of repositories.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad Community access: unlimited users get full-text search, batch replacement, CLI, MCP, and SCIP code intelligence without a paid plan.
Built for fleet-wide work: automated branches and merge requests make cross-repository replacements more manageable.
Deployment and host flexibility: multiple installation methods and integrations cover a range of self-hosted and commercial code hosts.
Customer-side data control: the maker says code and data remain on customer servers and the app sends no telemetry or usage data back.

Cons

Self-hosting is fundamental: teams seeking a managed hosted service will need another option.
Key governance features are gated: OIDC SSO, role-based repository permissions, and audit logs are Enterprise-only.
Enterprise uses custom pricing: organizations cannot compare it against a published price without requesting a quote.
Community support is issue-based: priority support is reserved for Enterprise.

Alternatives

Sourcebot is another freemium code-search option with a free Basic plan and a free trial; consider it if you want to compare a separate self-hosted search product.

ast-grep is a free option available across API, extension, desktop, and web platforms; choose it when a free tool across those platforms is a better fit than Code Search's self-hosted repository-wide workflow.

OpenGrok is a free, open-source project under the CDDL license and supports self-hosting; it is worth considering if that project and license are preferable to Code Search's Apache 2.0 project.

Chatterbox TTS is another free software entry.

sqry is free, open source under the MIT license, and runs locally; consider it if a local-running tool is the priority.

Understand has a free plan and trial, as well as an annual subscription priced at 100120.00 USD per year with a 12-month minimum; compare it if you are evaluating a paid annual option.

Code Fundi offers a freemium Dev plan at 21.00 USD per month, including 5,000 credits per month and 10 private repository indexes; consider it if those limits and its multi-codebase search and chat suit your needs.

searchcode is a free option with API, self-hosted, and web platforms; it is an alternative to compare if those access modes match your requirements.

Verdict

Choose Code Search if your organization needs fast repository-wide search, code navigation, and batch replacement on infrastructure it controls; Community delivers those core functions for unlimited users at no cost. Look elsewhere if you require a hosted service, or budget for Enterprise if SSO, repository permissions, audit logging, or priority support are non-negotiable.
