Overview

Colorize is built around a narrow task: restoring color to black-and-white images and videos. On Android, users can scan or upload a photo and colorize it with one tap. That direct workflow suits occasional restorations and family archives, though the one-tap description applies to photos; the app is not presented as a general photo editor.

Key features

Colorized photos can be saved or shared. The free Colorize Basic plan allows a limited number of photo colorizations, while paid access removes the colorization cap and allows unlimited saving and sharing. In practice, the free plan is enough to try a few images, but a larger collection calls for a paid plan.

The yearly and monthly memberships add photo backup and access on other devices and online. Colorize is also part of the Photomyne Scanning Suite, alongside Photo Scan, SlideScan and FilmBox, which may suit people digitizing slides and negatives as well as prints. Photomyne Apps can upload materials selected by the user to Google Photos with permission, without access to the rest of that Google Photos library.

Privacy is a consideration when choosing a service for personal photographs. Google Play says data is encrypted in transit and users can request deletion; it also says the app may share device or other IDs and collect personal information, messages and five other data types. Photomyne says generative AI may process biometric data for selected features with consent, and that it does not use biometric data to identify a person. Personal-information servers are hosted by AWS in the United States and Europe, including Ireland; deidentified or aggregated information is hosted by Google Cloud Platform. Pricing

Colorize Basic is free and includes a limited number of black-and-white photo colorizations. The Android app describes the first few photos as free, making this a sensible way to decide whether the colorization workflow suits your archive, but not a plan for sustained use.

The Yearly membership costs 59.99 USD per year. It includes unlimited black-and-white colorization, unlimited saving and sharing, photo backup, and access on other devices and online. It begins with a billed 3-day free trial, then charges $59.99/year and auto-renews until canceled. This is the clearest option for people processing many photos and wanting cloud access, provided they are comfortable managing renewal.

The Monthly membership has the same stated colorization, saving, sharing and backup benefits, with monthly auto-renewal and custom pricing. It may fit someone who prefers a shorter subscription commitment, though its price is not published here. The One-Time plan offers unlimited premium access for two years for a single upfront payment, also at custom pricing. It avoids a recurring subscription during that period, but its upfront cost cannot be compared with the yearly plan from the price shown.

Platforms

Colorize is available on Android and iOS. The one-tap scan-or-upload workflow is described for Android; the service also supports colorizing photos and videos.

Who it's for

Choose Colorize if you want a simple mobile route to colorizing family photographs or videos and value backup that makes restored photos accessible beyond one device. It is less suitable if you need a broad editing toolkit, expect to process a large archive without a subscription, or want a paid plan whose price is clear before choosing.

Pros and cons

Pros: One-tap photo colorization on Android keeps the core task direct; paid plans combine unlimited colorization and saving with backup and access across devices and online.
Cons: The free photo allowance is limited, and the $59.99-per-year membership auto-renews after a three-day trial; monthly and two-year plan prices are custom pricing.
Privacy trade-off: Encryption in transit and deletion requests are supported, while the app may share device IDs and collect personal information and messages.

Alternatives

Palette is a web, Windows and API option whose free tier includes one trial credit, unlimited previews resized to 500x500px, and a watermark, so it may suit previewing results before paying. PicWish Photo Colorizer supports a wider range of platforms, including web and desktop, and its online plan allows free coloring and downloads plus bulk editing of up to 30 images.

HitPaw AI Image Colorizer is another option. Molyin Photo Colorizer offers a web-based free tier with 10 credits for new users and seven-day storage. VanceAI Photo Colorizer provides 10 free credits for trying its web service, with JPG and PNG uploads up to 5MB. ImageColorizer is available on web and mobile, with a free plan that provides 50 credits per month and single processing. Picture Colorizer offers a web-based free tier with credits for several images and no credit card required.

Verdict

Colorize is a good fit for people who want to restore family photos and videos on a phone, with paid backup extending access beyond the device. Its focused workflow and unlimited paid colorization are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if the limited free allowance is too small, you need a broader editing tool, or you want to compare subscription costs before committing: the annual plan renews automatically, and the monthly and two-year prices are custom pricing.
