Overview

IDrive backs up computers, phones, servers, and NAS devices to one account, making it a fit for households and organizations with a mix of hardware to protect. Its version history, snapshots, and long-term archiving give restores more depth than a simple current-copy backup, but storage limits and possible overage fees deserve close attention.

Key features

IDrive covers Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad, Android, servers, and NAS devices. Incremental, compressed backups transfer modified portions of files, reducing bandwidth use after an initial backup. That is useful for ongoing protection across several devices, though the storage quota still determines how much can be retained.

Up to 30 previous versions of each backed-up file are retained, and Snapshots support point-in-time recovery. Users can restore individual files, earlier versions, deleted files, disk images, or use IDrive Express. Together with ransomware protection, these options provide ways to recover data from before an unwanted change or incident.

True Archiving keeps files in the account until they are manually deleted or Archive Cleanup is run. This suits users who want copies to outlast their original devices, but it also makes active management of stored data important. Files are encrypted with 256-bit AES in transit and at rest; private encryption keys are optional and are not stored on IDrive's servers.

Add-ons cover Microsoft 365, Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Salesforce, Dropbox, and Box. Team and Business plans support administration of multiple users through a web console or administrative account. IDrive cites SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certifications, and support for HIPAA, SOX, GLBA, and SEC/FINRA requirements; it offers a Business Associate Agreement for HIPAA. Support is available around the clock by live chat, email, and phone.

Pricing

IDrive has a free Basic plan with 10 GB of storage and no credit-card requirement. That is a low-commitment way to try basic backup, but its small quota limits how much can be protected. A Basic account can also be used to add services such as Cloud Applications Backup, whose trial lasts seven days.

IDrive Mini: 0.25 USD per month for 100 GB and one user. It is the least expensive paid option, but its modest capacity is best for a narrow personal backup need.
IDrive Personal: 11.99 USD per month for 5 TB, one user, and multiple computers. It suits one person protecting several devices, though the single-user allowance does not serve a team.
IDrive Team: 11.99 USD per month for 5 TB, five users, and five computers. It gives a small group shared capacity and user management, but limits both seats and computers.
IDrive Business: 59.99 USD per month for 1.25 TB and unlimited users, computers, servers, Exchange, SQL, and NAS devices. The broad device allowance makes it suitable for organizations with many endpoints, while the stated storage quota is lower than Personal and Team.
Microsoft Office 365 Backup: 20.00 USD per year, billed at $20/Seat/Year, with unlimited storage and a seven-day free trial. It is the focused choice for Microsoft 365 backup rather than general device protection.

Exceeding storage limits may incur $0.25/GB/month on Personal and $0.50/GB/month on Team and Business, so capacity growth can change the effective cost. IDrive advertises first-year discounts and savings on two-year plans; renewal pricing should be weighed against those initial savings. Basic is free; plans without a published price use custom pricing.

Platforms

IDrive supports Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and web access, as well as servers and NAS devices. This breadth is a practical advantage for mixed environments and users backing up both computers and mobile devices.

Who it's for

IDrive is strongest for individuals who need one account for multiple computers and mobile devices, and for small or larger organizations managing varied systems. Its archiving and restore choices suit users who value recoverability and long retention; people who need only a small photo library or a narrowly focused backup tool may find a more specialized service a better fit.

Pros and cons

Pro: One service covers computers, mobile devices, servers, and NAS, reducing the need to split backups across device types.
Pro: File versions, Snapshots, and True Archiving offer several routes to recover older or deleted data.
Pro: Optional private keys and 256-bit AES encryption support users who want stronger control over data confidentiality.
Con: The free 10 GB quota and fixed paid storage allowances may constrain large libraries or expanding business data.
Con: Per-GB monthly overage charges on Personal, Team, and Business can make exceeding a quota costly.
Con: Team and Business administration is aimed at managed environments; a single-user seeking only photo storage may not need that breadth.

Alternatives

For a photo-focused alternative, Ente Photos has a free 10 GB plan and a 50 GB family plan at 2.49 USD per month; choose it when that photo-oriented capacity and family setup suit better than IDrive's broader device backup. FOREVER offers one-time storage plans, including 10 GB for 179.99 USD, so it may suit someone who prefers a single payment over recurring monthly backup pricing.

PhotoSync has a free tier for basic transfers, while full-size transfer, RAW, NAS, and cloud features are paid; consider it when transferring photos is the main task. Rawback offers a free 5 GB tier with AI credits and face recognition, making it a possible fit for users prioritizing those photo-library tools. Pho has a free local gallery and an open-source core sync engine, for readers who value that approach.

Immich is free but requires a self-hosted server, which suits people willing to run their own infrastructure. Picture Keeper offers a 30-day free trial followed by a 3.99 USD monthly plan for unlimited extra backup of phone photos, videos, and contacts; it is more narrowly focused on mobile backups. Tonfotos offers a free lifetime license with limited people in photos, an alternative for users who want a no-time-limit photo catalog rather than IDrive's broader backup service.

Verdict

Choose IDrive if you want one account for multiple device types, with version history, point-in-time recovery, and archiving to strengthen your restore options. Its central trade-off is capacity: the free tier is small, paid plans have defined quotas, and exceeding some limits adds monthly charges. If you can size storage realistically, IDrive is a capable choice for multi-device backup; if your need is only photo storage or a self-hosted setup, a more focused alternative may fit better.
