Overview

LaunchBox brings modern PC games and emulated console titles into one catalog, making it a strong fit for players whose libraries span storefronts and ROM collections. Its import and organization tools are broad; the main reason to pay is for richer presentation and controller-oriented features.

It can import Steam and GOG games, ROM files, and MS-DOS games, then enrich entries with box art, metadata, fan art, screenshots, and logos. That breadth suits a mixed library better than a catalog built around one storefront, though the payoff is greatest when there are enough games to organize.

Key features

Filters cover genre, platform, ESRB rating, developer, and publisher. Custom status and source fields, plus editable metadata, let users track their own categories alongside standard game details. This is useful for collectors who want more than a launch list, but may be more structure than a small, single-store library needs.

Premium adds community-created or custom themes, Big Box mode, gamepad automation, startup and pause screens, and display customization. These extras make more sense for users building a tailored, controller-friendly setup than for someone who only wants a searchable catalog. Controller support and cloud sync are also supported.

Pricing

The free Starter (Windows) plan is free and includes the core experience, with imports and game play, free forever. It is the sensible starting point for users who want to organize a Windows collection before paying, but it excludes Premium features.

Regular (Windows) costs 30.00 USD per once, billed as “Own it forever.” It includes all Premium features, a license that lasts forever, and one year of free updates. It suits Windows users who want the full presentation and controller feature set without paying for lifetime updates.

Bundle (Windows and Android) costs 35.00 USD per once, billed as “Own both licenses forever.” It includes all Premium features for both apps, both perpetual licenses, and a year of free updates to both apps. For five dollars more than Regular, it is the fit for users who want Premium on Android as well as Windows.

Lifetime (Windows) costs 75.00 USD per once, billed as “Own it forever,” with all Premium features, a perpetual license, and lifetime updates. It is the Windows choice for users who value ongoing updates enough to pay more than twice the Regular price. Premium is DRM-free and may be deployed on as many personal devices as desired.

Platforms

LaunchBox runs on Windows 10 and higher; Windows 10 and 11 are fully supported. The app can be moved to another folder or computer by copying it, which makes relocating a Windows setup straightforward. Android is free for collections of 100 games or fewer and is distributed through direct downloads and updates.

Android uses the same games database, media, and portable XML data as Windows, and Windows data can be exported to Android. That gives users a way to carry a catalog across devices, while the 100-game free cap makes Android less suitable for larger collections without the Bundle license.

Who it's for

LaunchBox is best for PC players and retro-game collectors who want one organized library across store purchases and emulated games, especially if artwork and custom catalog fields matter. It is less compelling for someone who only needs a simple launcher for a small collection, or who does not need the Premium display and controller features.

Support resources include technical-support forums, how-to video tutorials, bug reporting, and feature requests. The product is made by Unbroken Software, LLC.

Pros and cons

Broad imports: automated importing across Steam, GOG, ROM files, and MS-DOS games supports a mixed collection.
Rich catalog detail: artwork, metadata, flexible filters, and custom fields help make a large library navigable.
Portable Windows setup: copying the app to another folder or computer avoids tying the collection to one location.
Premium is a separate purchase: themes, Big Box mode, gamepad automation, and display features require a paid license.
Android free tier has a cap: collections above 100 games need a paid route for Android use.
Update terms differ by license: Regular and Bundle include one year of updates, while lifetime updates require the higher-priced Lifetime plan on Windows.

Alternatives

For an API-focused source rather than a personal game-library manager, RAWG offers a free non-commercial plan with data for 500,000+ games and up to 20,000 requests per month, subject to backlinks and non-commercial use.

IGDB is another API option: its API is free, while commercial use requires a partnership and user-facing attribution is expected. Choose it when those terms fit a data integration better than LaunchBox's local collection tools.

RaiderZ Game Database is a free-play option for readers looking for a web or Windows game database rather than LaunchBox's import-and-organize frontend.

YGOPRODeck provides a free API with a stated limit of 20 requests per second; exceeding it blocks access for an hour. It is a narrower alternative for readers seeking that API rather than a general collection manager.

BoardGameGeek offers free core site access across Android, iOS, and web, making it a fit for readers cataloging board games rather than PC and emulated titles.

The Visual Novel Database has a free non-commercial API with request and execution limits, so it is the more relevant choice for that specific data use.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Database is a free Android, iOS, and web option for readers who need a card database rather than a game launcher.

NostalgiaDB is a free platform for readers seeking an archive and API; play and archive downloads require a free registered account, and API access requires a key.

Verdict

Choose LaunchBox if you want a richly organized Windows library that can combine storefront games and emulated titles, with Android support for smaller collections. Its broad imports and flexible catalog are the strongest reasons to use it; look elsewhere if you only need a basic launcher or want the Premium presentation without buying a license.
