Overview

The app connects mobile devices to an existing business phone system over broadband data. Operators can customize its look and publish it under their own name in the Apple and Google app stores, making it a way to extend a service to mobile users rather than a standalone phone product.

That distinction matters: Sip:phone requires an account on a Sipwise server and is not designed to work properly with arbitrary SIP providers or any Sipwise deployment. Its value depends on the organization’s platform, provisioning, and licensing arrangements.

Key features

Audio and video calling are joined by hold, two simultaneous calls, three-way conferences, and blind or attended transfer. That covers routine business call handling on the move; the two-call limit may frustrate staff who regularly manage more concurrent conversations.

Users can set do not disturb, caller ID restriction, and ringing policy from the app. Administrators can decide whether a desk phone or mobile rings first, or have either ring on its own. These controls help coordinate calls across devices, but they are relevant only within a compatible Sipwise setup.

Contacts synchronize with Sipwise C5 subscribers, while presence can be shown for favorite contacts. The app negotiates voice codecs from narrow-band to HD for the available network. Sipwise C5’s Mobile Push Module uses the phone platform’s standard push framework to launch the app for calls or notifications, with the aim of reducing battery drain.

Subscribers can be activated through Sipwise C5 interfaces such as its web interface or REST API, then sign in with a username and password or scan a server-generated QR code. Encrypted SIP communication is described for calls. These provisioning choices suit operators integrating the app into existing workflows, rather than individuals configuring an unrelated SIP account.

Pricing

The App Store download is free, but requires an existing sipwise.com server account. The commercial sip:phone app has custom pricing and requires a Sipwise server account; prospective buyers should ask Sipwise Sales about licensing, deployment, branding, and optional support. There is no general-purpose free tier for organizations outside that setup.

Sipwise offers a demo app for evaluation in a non-production environment. Commercial availability also depends on edition: Sip:phone is unavailable in Community Edition, while PRO/Carrier requires a Sip:Phone App license. Buyers should settle both the license and deployment requirements before planning a rollout.

Platforms

Sip:phone is available for Android and iOS, and integrates with Sipwise C5 and CPBX subscribers. The app’s mobile focus is a strength for staff who need business extensions away from a desk, but it does not serve as a desktop softphone option.

Who it's for

This is a targeted choice for operators using Sipwise NGCP who want a white-label mobile client integrated with provisioning and billing workflows. Businesses on Sipwise C5 or CPBX can use it to extend their phone system to mobile staff. Individuals or organizations seeking a client for arbitrary SIP providers should choose a broader softphone instead.

Sip:phone is not intended or designed for emergency calls; using it as a default dialer may interfere with emergency dialing. It should not replace a device’s normal emergency-calling option.

Pros and cons

Pros

White-label branding and app-store publication let operators present a mobile client as part of their own service.
Call transfer, conferencing, hold, and configurable multi-device ringing support common business calling needs.
QR-code or credential sign-in and C5 subscriber provisioning fit operator-managed deployments.

Cons

It requires a Sipwise server account and does not suit arbitrary SIP providers, sharply limiting its audience.
Commercial use requires a separate license, and the Community Edition does not include the app.
It is not designed for emergency calling and should not be used as a default dialer.

Alternatives

For a wider selection of clients, browse Softphone Software. Choose Bria Solo if a free personal plan for one device and one SIP/VoIP account is enough; its free plan limits weekly calls and non-commercial use, while the paid plan costs 2.95 USD per year. Blink is another option when a free client for Linux, Mac, or Windows is preferable, though it requires a SIP account.

Linphone suits readers looking for an open-source client that can be integrated under the GNU GPLv3, with proprietary licensing available for closed-source projects. Siperb Mobile Softphone offers a free Personal plan with limited storage, seven-day SIP trace and register activity logs, and community rather than technical support. SipPulse Softphone has a free app plan with unlimited users and installations across iOS, Android, Windows, and Linux; its White Label subscription has custom pricing.

Zoiper may suit non-commercial users who need a free softphone with one account and two lines, or teams considering mobile licensing at 29.88 EUR per year. Phoner is an alternative with one-time in-app credit packs, including a 2.99 USD Starter Credit Pack and 6.99 USD Bronze Pack. AGEphone fits personal use on Android, iOS, or Windows; business use requires AGEphone Cloud or AGEphone Business.

Verdict

Choose Sip:phone if you operate Sipwise C5 or CPBX and want a branded mobile extension with practical business call handling and coordinated desk-and-mobile ringing. The platform integration is its main reason to buy; the required Sipwise account, separate app license, and lack of emergency calling are strong reasons to look elsewhere if you need an independent SIP client or everyday dialer.
