Overview

Danbyte is an open-source platform that combines IP address management, data-center infrastructure management and network source-of-truth records. It is best suited to infrastructure teams that want discovery and automation alongside inventory, and can run the software on their own Linux systems. Its broad scope is a strength for connected environments, but deployment requires PostgreSQL 15+ and Redis as well as the application.

Key features

For IPAM, Danbyte calculates prefix containment, free space and utilization by VRF, and handles VLANs, DHCP ranges, DNS zones and route targets. That makes it a fit for teams that need address records tied to wider network operations; a simpler, address-only workflow may not benefit from its broader infrastructure model.

Its DCIM tools model rack elevations, device faceplates, ports, power, virtual chassis and device catalogs. Topology features extend that record across cable and fibre-strand tracing, floor plans, circuits, VPN tunnels and wireless SSIDs, with four topology views. This is useful when teams need to connect physical and logical infrastructure rather than manage a rack list in isolation.

Proxmox VE and VMware vCenter imports cover virtual machines, disks, virtual switches, VLANs and ESXi hosts, with drift reconciliation. Active checks, SNMP and nmap discovery maintain an observed layer and a drift inbox, giving teams a way to compare recorded infrastructure with discovered state.

Automation includes native Ansible and Terraform inventory, Jinja export templates, configuration contexts, drift runners, signed webhooks and scoped APIs. Integrations also include Slack, Microsoft Teams, PagerDuty, LDAP/AD and WinRM. These capabilities make Danbyte relevant where inventory needs to feed operational workflows; teams wanting only static documentation may find the scope unnecessary.

Security controls include default-authenticated APIs, scoped API tokens, TLS-secure cookies, HSTS, CSP, security headers and SSRF protections. Danbyte can run air-gapped on the user's hardware, with no phone-home, telemetry or expiring license. The quick installer bundles Python, Node and dependencies, but does not remove the PostgreSQL and Redis requirements. A private demo tenant is available without signup or a card and is deleted after 30 minutes.

Pricing

Danbyte's Free and open source plan is free. It includes all features, self-hosted deployment, no seat license, no enterprise tier and no license expiry. The Self-hosted Danbyte plan is also free, billed forever, with all features and the same no-seat-license, no-enterprise-tier and no-expiry terms. Neither plan imposes a paid feature tier or seat charge, making self-hosting the practical choice for teams able to operate the required infrastructure.

Danbyte Cloud is marked Coming soon, with custom pricing. It is intended to provide a private instance with managed updates, backups, uptime and TLS, while allowing export at any time. Teams that want a managed service will need to wait for that option; those choosing now need to run Danbyte themselves.

Platforms

Danbyte supports API, Linux, self-hosted and web use. Deployment is on-premises, and the quick installer targets Linux. The fully air-gapped option suits environments that keep infrastructure systems off the public internet, but the Linux and database prerequisites should be weighed before adoption.

Who it's for

Danbyte is aimed at infrastructure and network teams that want IPAM, rack and topology records, virtualization imports, discovery and automation in one source of truth. Its no-cost, no-expiry self-hosted plans also suit organizations that need control over where infrastructure data runs. It is a weaker fit for teams unable to provide Linux, PostgreSQL and Redis, or those seeking a managed cloud instance immediately.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free self-hosted plans include all features and have no seat license or expiry, removing license cost and seat caps as barriers to broad use.
Pros: IPAM, DCIM, topology, virtualization imports, discovery and automation share one platform, which can reduce fragmentation between infrastructure records and operational workflows.
Pros: Air-gapped operation without telemetry supports environments that require local control of infrastructure data.
Cons: Running the platform requires Linux deployment plus PostgreSQL 15+ and Redis, adding operational responsibilities that a hosted service would avoid.
Cons: The managed cloud option is not yet available, so teams seeking managed updates, backups, uptime and TLS cannot choose it now.

Alternatives

Global Site Management is worth considering for smaller data centers or pilot programs that suit its free GSMpowerlite tier; it also offers a freemium model and a free trial.

Hyperview may suit teams that want to evaluate a paid DCIM product through its 30-day, all-features trial without a credit card; its listed plan is billed per asset per year.

openDCIM is another free, self-hosted Linux and web option, described as a GPL v3 web-based application.

Cormant-CS is a paid alternative with a listed 7,200.00 USD per year subscription for approximately 25–30 racks, including 500 assets and support with 32 hours of live consultant assistance.

ColdAisle is a free, self-hosted web and Windows alternative under the MIT license.

Sentry Power Manager is a paid alternative with a free trial for teams considering power management software.

Sunbird dcTrack offers a paid DCIM Operations plan at 19.50 USD per month on an annual subscription, with unlimited users, sites and assets; it may suit teams that prefer those terms to Danbyte's self-hosted approach.

netTerrain DCIM is a paid option for teams comparing on-premises and cloud deployment, with pricing that varies by devices and editor users.

Verdict

Choose Danbyte if your team wants a no-cost, no-expiry self-hosted source of truth that connects IPAM and data-center inventory with discovery and automation. Its breadth and air-gapped option are compelling, but Linux deployment and PostgreSQL and Redis requirements make it a poor fit for teams that need managed hosting or want to avoid operating infrastructure software.
