Overview

Contour brings together split panes, SSH, scripting, and sessions that can survive a terminal window and be reattached locally or over a network. That makes it more capable than a bare command prompt, particularly for users who keep long-running work open or move between local and remote sessions. Its modal design and vi-like navigation modes favor people comfortable with keyboard-driven workflows.

The project is licensed under Apache License 2.0. Installation options include Windows MSI, Homebrew on macOS, packages for Fedora, Arch, and Ubuntu, Flatpak, and source builds. The project website is still in draft mode, so users seeking polished product guidance may find it less helpful.

Key features

Rendering and text

GPU-accelerated rendering and high-DPI support are aimed at responsive use on modern displays. Font ligatures, Unicode grapheme clusters, and complex emoji support help preserve how programming text and symbols appear. Sixel images, clickable links, and OSC 52 clipboard support extend the terminal beyond ordinary text output, while statuslines can be controlled by a host program or show indicators.

Sessions and navigation

Persistent sessions can outlive a terminal window and be reattached locally or over a network, a practical advantage for work that should continue across connections. Vi-like modes support navigation, selection, and copying; vertical markers provide a way to jump through terminal history. Custom profiles group color schemes, login shells, and related behaviors, making it easier to keep distinct environments organized.

Remote access and tmux

Contour supports SSH and tmux control-mode interoperability in both directions, but tmux support has a material boundary: control mode (-C) works, while -CC does not. Images rendered before attaching through tmux cannot be recovered, because tmux capture-pane preserves text and color rather than image data. Remote TCP endpoints are always encrypted with TLS, and connections require a token; Contour will not start the endpoint without a token or token file. Daemon mode remains experimental, with command-line flags and wire protocol subject to change, so it is not the safest foundation for a workflow that needs stable daemon behavior.

Pricing

Contour is free at 0.00 USD per free, with no paid plans. That makes the full product accessible without a subscription decision, though there is no paid tier to turn to for a different level of service. It is a straightforward choice for individuals and teams able to use the project as offered.

Platforms

Contour supports Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and Windows. The breadth makes it a viable option for mixed desktop environments, while the official installation paths cover Windows MSI, Homebrew, several Linux distributions, Flatpak, and source builds.

Who it's for

Contour is best suited to advanced users who value modal, keyboard-led navigation, long-lived sessions, and control over terminal presentation. Developers and shell users who rely on ligatures, Unicode, image output, SSH, or scripting may find its feature set particularly useful. It is a weaker fit for users dependent on tmux -CC or image recovery after a tmux attachment, and for anyone who needs an experimental daemon to behave as a stable interface.

Pros and cons

Pros

Persistent sessions can be reattached locally or remotely, helping preserve ongoing work beyond a window or connection.
GPU rendering, high-DPI support, ligatures, and complex Unicode handling cover both responsive display and rich terminal text.
Free availability across five operating systems, with multiple installation routes for common desktop systems.
TLS-encrypted TCP access with mandatory token authentication gives remote connections defined security requirements.

Cons

Experimental daemon flags and protocol may change, making daemon-dependent workflows less predictable.
tmux control mode excludes -CC, and images drawn before attachment cannot be restored from tmux capture-pane.
The draft-mode website may be a drawback for users who need finished product guidance.

Alternatives

Terminal Emulators is the broader category to consult when you want to compare terminal choices rather than commit to Contour.

Termalin is worth considering if you want a freemium option spanning mobile and web as well as desktop, with SSH and SFTP, an encrypted vault, session recording, and replay.
MobaXterm is a Windows-only alternative; its Home Edition has stated session, tunnel, macro, and service-duration caps, while Professional Edition costs 69.00 USD per year.
gitsome is a free, open-source CLI option for users who want a command-line tool across Linux, macOS, Windows, or self-hosted environments.
Warp is another freemium choice for developers, with a free monthly plan that includes core terminal features and Warp Agent CLI access.
Tabby is a free FOSS alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Hyper is a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
WezTerm is a free, MIT-licensed alternative for users who want pre-built releases or the option to build from source.
Ghostty is a free, open-source option for Linux and macOS, without commercial backing or a dedicated support team.

Verdict

Choose Contour if you want a free, cross-platform terminal centered on modal navigation, persistent sessions, and capable text and rendering support. Its remote security requirements are clear and its platform reach is broad, but tmux -CC gaps and the experimental daemon matter: users who depend on either should choose a terminal whose workflow does not hinge on those limitations.
