Overview

Practice can begin with typed text, an imported PDF, photo, or DOCX file, a Word Pack, or vocabulary collected while reading. The app recognizes Chinese text in imports and lets you review and edit it before creating a worksheet—a useful step when the original file contains material you do not want to copy unchanged. Learn mode groups unique characters; Practice mode keeps the full text in order. That makes it possible to drill a set of characters or work through a passage, but neither mode grades the result.

Worksheet settings include grids, fonts, cell size, repetitions, pinyin, translations, tracing or fading, and stroke-order guides. Worksheets can be written on with Apple Pencil on iPad or exported as A4 PDFs for digital or paper practice. This range of controls is valuable for tailoring repetition and visual support, though it remains a worksheet tool rather than a complete Chinese-learning program.

Key features

Word Packs provide HSK 1–5 vocabulary for both HSK 2.0 and HSK 3.0, plus themed collections. They save setup time for learners who want structured word lists without composing every exercise themselves. Bookshelf offers two free interactive stories, Office Help and Four Cities Over Coffee; readers can check pinyin and translations, collect words, and reach one of 12 endings across the stories. Turning collected words into worksheet practice links reading with handwriting, although the app does not present itself as a full course.

Ink Rush adds short, 60-second memory rounds with three lives. It checks stroke order and direction automatically, giving users a quick handwriting exercise alongside worksheet work. The app also syncs selected worksheet records, saved filled Apple Pencil PDFs, rewards, and Ink Rush progress through a private iCloud database when available. Core worksheets, story reading, and Ink Rush continue locally without iCloud.

Worksheet generation and file processing happen on-device. The maker says it operates no server for worksheet content and uses no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. These are relevant privacy choices for users working with personal study files.

Pricing

The Free plan is free and includes three worksheet generations per week, up to two pages per worksheet, selected fonts and palettes, free Word Packs, two stories, two Ink Rush rounds per day, and PDF export. That is enough to try the main workflow or make occasional practice sheets, but the weekly generation and page caps can constrain regular study. Free PDF exports include a small Copybook Club signature near the page edge, described by the maker as a creator credit rather than a watermark.

Pro has custom pricing. It removes the worksheet-generation limit, allows longer worksheets and more customization, and adds premium fonts and palettes, Pro Word Packs, unlimited Ink Rush rounds, and a third rewarded round each day. It is the plan for frequent worksheet makers who outgrow the free quota or want the expanded options; the Free plan is the more sensible starting point for learners who only need short, occasional exercises.

Platforms

Copybook Club is available for iOS. Apple Pencil worksheet writing is supported on iPad, and PDF export provides a way to practise digitally or on paper. Core features continue locally when iCloud is unavailable.

Who it's for

Choose Copybook Club if you are learning Simplified Chinese and want to turn your own material, imported text, HSK vocabulary, or story words into configurable handwriting practice. It may also suit teachers preparing worksheets from selected content. Look elsewhere if you need a complete Chinese course, flashcards, HSK progress tracking, handwriting grading, or personalized assessment; those are outside its scope.

Pros and cons

Pros: Imports PDFs, photos, and DOCX files, recognizes Chinese text, and allows corrections before worksheet creation, making existing study material reusable.
Pros: Layout, repetition, reading aids, and stroke-order guides can be adjusted, with A4 PDF export and Apple Pencil use on iPad.
Pros: Free stories, HSK Word Packs, and Ink Rush add ways to find and practise vocabulary beyond typing it in.
Pros: On-device processing and local core use reduce reliance on a service connection for worksheet work.
Cons: Free users are limited to three worksheet generations a week and two pages per worksheet, which may be restrictive for daily practice.
Cons: Pro expands the limits and content, but custom pricing makes the upgrade cost harder to weigh against those needs.
Cons: The app focuses on handwriting and does not grade it or provide a broader Chinese course, flashcards, or HSK progress tracking.

Alternatives

For a broader directory of handwriting tools, see Handwriting Practice Apps. Choose LetterSchool instead if you want early literacy activities across Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows; its free app covers a limited set of letters, shapes, and CVC flashcards. Kanji Dojo is an open-source option available on mobile, desktop, and web platforms. Pick Writing Wizard if you want handwriting practice on Android, iOS, or Windows, with remaining letters and custom words requiring an in-app purchase or subscription.

Handwriting Repeater is a free alternative on Android, iOS, and web with no sentence or repetition limits and no account requirement. Hanzi Writer is another Chinese-writing option on Android, iOS, and macOS, with core practice features in its free plan. Nazoru suits learners seeking Japanese study paths and integrations across Android, iOS, and macOS. Skritter is a paid alternative for Android, iOS, and web, with a 7-day free trial on its monthly plan. Cursive: Learn Cursive is another handwriting practice app for Android, iOS, and macOS.

Verdict

Copybook Club is a strong fit for Simplified Chinese learners who want flexible, reusable handwriting worksheets and a few ways to build practice from reading and vocabulary lists. Its free tier gives a meaningful starting point, while Pro targets users who need more volume and customization. Look elsewhere for instruction, progress assessment, or handwriting grading; the app is deliberately narrower than those needs.
