Overview

CosmoLex brings legal matter workflows and firm accounting together in a cloud-based platform for small and mid-sized law firms. It suits practices that need trust accounting alongside billing and client collaboration; its integrated scope is less attractive if you only need a narrow billing or timekeeping tool.

Emails, tasks, events, documents, billable items, and transactions are tied to client matters, giving teams a shared view of the work and its financial trail. Client intake forms and a secure portal support client collaboration, while roles and custom workflows help firms coordinate access and processes.

Key features

Matter work and client collaboration

Keeping matter records, communications, and financial activity connected can reduce the effort of matching work to the right client file. Every plan includes the secure client portal, and the platform supports multi-user access, role-based permissions, custom workflows, and real-time collaboration. Firms with simpler, single-user needs may not benefit as much from this team-oriented setup.

Accounting, billing, and compliance

CosmoLex combines time tracking, billing, payments, trust accounting, and firm accounting in one system. Trust tools include three-way reconciliation and detailed audit trails, while more than 100 real-time reports provide financial visibility. This breadth is useful for firms that want practice and accounting workflows together; it may be more software than a firm needs if it already has a suitable accounting system and wants to keep it.

Integrations and security

Integrations include Microsoft 365, QuickBooks Online, Dropbox, email, payment processing, and Zapier; the Zapier connection opens access to more than 4,000 applications. Security controls include SOC 2 Type 2 certification, encryption in transit and at rest, and SMS two-factor authentication. Data is backed up every few hours in encrypted redundant copies and stored in U.S.-based data centers.

Native apps are available for iOS and Android, with browser access on internet-connected mobile devices. A login supports one web session and one mobile-app session at a time, which may constrain people who need to keep multiple sessions open on the same device type.

Pricing

CosmoLex has no free plan. Its 10-day trial requires no credit card and includes the practice-management functionality of a paid subscription, but allows only one bank-feed connection and excludes the CosmoLex CRM and LexShare/LexSign add-ons.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best suited to
Launch	$49.00 USD per month, per user, billed monthly	Time tracking and invoicing, online payments, trust accounting and ledgers, compliance reporting, and bank reconciliation	Firms that need core time, billing, and trust workflows without general ledger and payables features
Core	$99.00 USD per month, per user, billed monthly	Launch features, flexible billing and retainers, general ledger and payables, and bank feeds	Firms that need broader billing options and firm accounting in the same system
Pro	$129.00 USD per month, per user, billed monthly	Core features with advanced compliance reporting	Firms that need the higher tier of compliance reporting

Launch costs least, but omits the general ledger, payables, and bank feeds included in Core. Core adds those capabilities and flexible billing; Pro is the step up for advanced compliance reporting. Because pricing is per user, the monthly total rises with each added seat. Every plan includes onboarding, training resources, and support by phone, chat, or email.

Platforms

CosmoLex runs on the web and has native Android and iOS apps. Browser access on mobile devices gives users another way to reach the platform, subject to the one-web-session and one-mobile-session login limit.

Who it's for

CosmoLex is a strong fit for small and mid-sized law firms that want client matters, billing, trust accounting, and firm finances managed together. Its matter-linked records and client portal are useful for teams coordinating client work, while its reconciliation, audit trails, and reporting serve firms that need financial oversight built into daily practice workflows.

Firms that only need a modest timekeeping or billing function may find the broader platform and per-user subscription hard to justify. The trial is also a limited preview for firms that rely on multiple bank feeds or want to evaluate the excluded CRM and LexShare/LexSign add-ons.

Pros and cons

Pros

Practice and accounting in one platform: matters, time, billing, payments, trust accounting, and firm accounting stay connected.
Trust controls support oversight: three-way reconciliation, detailed audit trails, and compliance reporting address common trust-accounting needs.
Client and team collaboration are built in: every plan includes the portal, with intake forms, roles, workflows, and real-time collaboration available.
Broad integration and mobile access: major email, document, calendar, payment, and productivity connections complement the iOS and Android apps.

Cons

No free plan: firms need a paid subscription after the 10-day trial.
Per-user costs scale with the team: the monthly bill grows as seats are added, with Core and Pro priced above Launch.
Launch has a narrower accounting set: general ledger, payables, and bank feeds start with Core.
Trial constraints leave some workflows untested: it permits one bank-feed connection and excludes the CRM and LexShare/LexSign add-ons.
Session limits may disrupt some working patterns: each login allows one web session and one mobile-app session at once.

Verdict

CosmoLex is best for small and mid-sized firms that want matter management, trust accounting, billing, and firm finances in one system. Its strongest reason to choose it is the connection between matter work and trust and business accounting, backed by reconciliation and audit tools. Look elsewhere if you need only a focused billing tool, want a free plan, or expect to evaluate multiple bank feeds and excluded add-ons during the trial.
