Overview

CriticalPast describes more than 59,000 historic clips and 7 million stills covering worldwide events, people, and B-roll. The collection draws on declassified U.S. government films, other public-domain federal holdings, and additional collections. When available, an unmarked clip order includes its government source ID, which helps producers retain provenance information for archival work.

Search tools support browsing and filtering by decade, location, color, and sound, with advanced operators for narrower queries. Registered users can create multiple lightboxes, preserve them between sessions, and share them with colleagues. The archive is therefore useful for research and shortlisting, although the still-image catalog has a significant boundary: downloadable stills are limited to images displayed with individual video clips.

Key features

Archival search and organization

The combination of date, place, visual, and audio filters gives researchers practical ways to reduce a large historical archive to relevant material. Advanced search operators are better suited to experienced researchers than to someone simply browsing stock footage. Shared lightboxes help a production, editorial, or museum team review candidates together without losing the working shortlist.

Clip licensing and delivery

Video is licensed by the clip rather than by the second. Broadcast-ready masters are full-resolution HD, unmarked, and supplied in ProRes or XDCAM with multiple frame rates. Orders include licensing and download delivery, and online purchases are typically ready within one hour; downloads remain accessible for two weeks after the order date. This is a production-oriented workflow, but sales are final except when media is defective, so buyers should confirm the selected clip and terms before ordering.

Screeners and stills

Registered users can request full-resolution screeners at no charge for evaluation and edit approval. Screeners carry burned-in timecode and the CriticalPast logo, making them suitable for internal decisions rather than final broadcast. JPEG stills are downloadable at 1382x960 pixels. Since stills only exist where they are shown under a video clip, CriticalPast should not be chosen as a general independent still-image source.

License scope and security

CriticalPast states that clips and stills are licensed worldwide, in perpetuity, for all media, including unlimited theatrical use, subject to the selected license. That breadth fits films, television, advertising, publishing, museums, and online education, but the exact license tier still matters. Its privacy policy says passwords are hashed, corporate database servers are inaccessible from outside the corporate network, and PayPal Braintree handles payment and billing data without storing or transmitting it on company servers.

Pricing

CriticalPast uses one-time, per-item purchases rather than subscriptions. The free Video screener plan is free for registered users and provides a full-resolution preview with burned-in timecode and the CriticalPast logo. It is useful for selecting material and securing edit approval, but it is not an unmarked master.

Still images cost 5.00 USD per image for Personal use only, 20.00 USD per image for the Standard License, or 30.00 USD per image for the Premium License. Each tier delivers a 1382x960 downloadable JPEG; the cheaper personal tier is unsuitable for commercial production, while the higher tiers provide broader stated usage.

The Broadcast-ready video clip master costs 95.00 USD per clip, with the final price varying by duration and format. It includes licensing and download delivery, and provides a full-resolution HD, unmarked master in ProRes or XDCAM. Because pricing is per clip, a project needing many short excerpts can cost more than a subscription library, but buyers pay for selected archival material rather than unused monthly access.

Platforms

CriticalPast is delivered through the web. Video downloads support selectable codecs and frame rates, while still images are JPEG files. There are no separate desktop or mobile plans described.

Who it's for

CriticalPast is a strong fit for broadcasters, television and film producers, news organizations, advertisers, publishers, museums, and online education teams that need twentieth-century historical context and a clear licensing scope. Its provenance information and unmarked master options are especially relevant to professional post-production. It is less suitable for hobbyists, social creators, or teams wanting a large supply of free, independently searchable stills or unwatermarked previews.

Pros and cons

Pros

Deep historical focus: More than 59,000 clips and 7 million stills cover worldwide twentieth-century events, people, and B-roll.
Production-ready masters: Unmarked full-HD files arrive in ProRes or XDCAM with multiple frame rates.
Broad stated rights: Worldwide, perpetual, all-media licensing, including unlimited theatrical use, suits long-lived professional projects.
Useful research workflow: Detailed filters, advanced operators, persistent lightboxes, and sharing support collaborative selection.
Free evaluation screeners: Registered users can review full-resolution material before committing to a paid master.

Cons

Per-clip costs add up: There is no subscription or broad free tier for finished, unmarked footage.
Screeners are watermarked: Burned-in timecode and the CriticalPast logo prevent them from serving as final deliverables.
Still access is narrow: Images can only be downloaded when shown with a video clip.
Limited resolution for stills: JPEG downloads are 1382x960 pixels.
Final-sale policy: Refunds or exchanges are limited to defective media, so selection and licensing need care.

Alternatives

Stock Video Websites is the broader starting point when you want to compare general stock-video services rather than a specialist historical archive.

Choose ProductionCrate instead when a freemium service and ongoing downloads matter: its free plan allows five downloads per day, while PRO costs 49.00 USD per month for full library access and up to 50 downloads.

Adobe Stock is the alternative for a paid commercial stock platform with a free trial and asset-credit plans, rather than per-clip archival purchasing.

Pick Newsflare when licensing is tailored to intended use, platform, quantity, and licensing period.

Coverr suits buyers seeking a freemium web service with free access and paid AI-credit plans, including 4K footage on its Basic plan.

Use Pexels or Pixabay when free photo and video downloads are the priority.

Artlist Music is the better choice when the requirement is music and sound effects with social-channel licensing.

123RF is an alternative for credit-based or team-oriented stock licensing.

Verdict

Choose CriticalPast if you are producing professional film, television, news, publishing, museum, advertising, or education work and need searchable twentieth-century archive footage with broad stated worldwide rights and production-ready masters. Look elsewhere if you need a general free stock library, independent still-image searching, or inexpensive access to large volumes of unwatermarked clips.
