Overview

CurseForge is a catalog for finding and downloading Minecraft mods and modpacks, with more than 10,000 projects to browse. It is best suited to players who want one place to compare content across several mod loaders. The free catalog does the essential job; Premium is for people who value ad-free access and downloads without waiting delays.

Key features

Browse projects for Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, and filter by game version. Project pages include dependency information, while download tracking and mod collections help players keep an eye on and organize their selections. These features make a large catalog more manageable, but compatibility still depends on the particular setup.

CurseForge supports modpacks as well as individual mods. Collections can be exported as a CurseForge .zip or shared with a profile code; built-in publishing, server tools and API access also serve creators and people managing modded setups. For someone looking for one mod, those broader tools may not be necessary.

The web catalog is available on Windows, macOS and Linux, and CurseForge also offers a desktop client. Premium removes ads across CurseForge platforms and the desktop client, and supplies direct downloads without waiting delays. On desktop, Premium also adds custom themes and layout customization—useful for regular users, but a modest reason to subscribe if the main need is occasional browsing.

CurseForge says authors receive 70% of subscription income. It cites more than $18 million paid to creators since 2020 and more than $20 million overall, giving Premium subscribers a stated creator-support rationale alongside its convenience features.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes free Minecraft mods and modpacks with web catalog access. The mods themselves remain free; paying is not required to browse and download them.

The Monthly Subscription costs 2.99 USD per month, billed monthly at $2.99, and can be cancelled anytime. It includes ad-free access, instant downloads and Premium web and desktop access. The Annual Subscription costs 2.50 USD per year, billed annually at $30.00 (listed from $35.88), with a stated 16% saving and cancellation anytime. Its lower effective monthly cost suits users who expect to keep Premium for the year; monthly billing avoids that longer commitment.

Premium Monthly and Premium Annual are also described as custom pricing; the annual plan is stated as billed annually at $30.00. Subscribers retain access until the end of their billing cycle after cancellation, and their accounts revert to free membership when Premium ends. Refunds are generally not offered, though exceptions may be considered individually. Tebex handles subscription payments, so the refund policy is worth weighing before subscribing.

Platforms

The catalog is web-based, with desktop access on Windows, macOS and Linux. Premium benefits extend to the web and desktop client. The game-version filters span releases from 1.14 through 1.21.5, including intermediate versions such as 1.16.5 and 1.20.6.

Who it's for

CurseForge suits Minecraft players who want to discover mods across Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, or organize and share a modpack. Its free access makes it a sensible starting point for newcomers, while collections, dependency information and publishing tools give experienced players and creators more to work with. Premium is most compelling for frequent users bothered by ads or download waits; casual users can stay with the free catalog.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free access to Minecraft mods and modpacks means users can explore the catalog without a subscription.
Pros: Four loader options, game-version filters and dependency information help narrow choices and assess mod relationships.
Pros: Collections, profile-code sharing and .zip export support organizing and handing off modpacks.
Cons: Ads and download waiting delays remain part of the free experience; removing them requires Premium.
Cons: Refunds are generally unavailable, making a subscription less flexible if a user changes their mind.

Alternatives

For a specific waypoint or map tool rather than a broad mod catalog, the EzWaypoints free client-side mod is for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.8–1.21.11 and Fabric only. MapWriter Mini Map MITE is a free, MIT-licensed port for Minecraft 1.6.4-MITE, making it the more relevant option for that older variant. Waypointer is a free open-source Fabric mod for Java Edition, but its current version requires Fabric Loader, Fabric API, Hypixel Mod API and Java 25+.

wWaypoints is another free option from a creator who makes Minecraft mods, videos and tools. Antique Atlas 4, Command Waypoints and Minimap CE are also free alternatives; Command Waypoints supports Linux. Xaero's Minimap is free, with optional Patreon support at 1.00 USD per month for sneak-peeks, auto updates and early access.

For broader browsing, compare Minecraft Mod Browsers, Game Mod Repositories and Game Mod Managers. Readers seeking a particular kind of Minecraft content can also browse Minecraft Minimap Mods, Minecraft Schematic Tools or Minecraft Resource Packs.

Verdict

Choose CurseForge if you want a broad, free Minecraft mod catalog with loader and version filters, plus tools to organize and share modpacks. Premium is a convenience upgrade for frequent users who want ads removed and direct downloads. Look elsewhere if you need a narrowly defined mod or prefer not to accept the generally no-refund subscription terms.
