Overview

Translation memory and terminology sit at the center of Déjà Vu X3. DeepMiner mines those databases to assemble phrases and improve fuzzy matches, while AutoWrite suggests stored terms, phrases and sentences for the translator to select. These tools can make existing language assets more useful during ongoing work, but their value depends on having relevant material in the first place.

Live Preview shows translation progress in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files. The alignment tool and customizable quality checks add useful control: checks can flag terminology inconsistencies, formatting, numbers and tags. That makes the package more complete than a translation editor focused only on matching and typing.

Key features

Translation workflow and file support

Déjà Vu X3 supports Office files, PDF, XLIFF, SDLXLIFF, TMX, XML, YAML, InDesign and HTML, among many others. It also handles exchange formats associated with other CAT tools, including Studio packages, MemoQ XLIFF, Wordfast TXML, TTX and Trados Workbench. This breadth is useful for translators receiving work from clients with different setups.

Translation assistance and collaboration

Google Translate, Microsoft Translate, ITranslate4, MyMemory Translate, Systran, Promt Translation and Asia Online Language Studio are among its machine translation integrations. Dragon NaturallySpeaking integration adds voice commands and speech recognition. Workgroup supports real-time sharing of translation memories and termbases, multilingual projects and workload splitting, giving teams a way to coordinate around shared language assets.

Pricing

Déjà Vu X3 uses a freemium model. The Free edition is free and supports standalone projects and satellite projects prepared with Déjà Vu X3 Workgroup. After the 30-day Professional evaluation, the software switches to Free mode; the free edition can view and work on satellite projects sent by translation firms, as well as standalone and Workgroup-prepared satellite projects. That makes it useful for translators receiving this kind of project, but restrictive for anyone expecting an unrestricted free solo edition.

The Professional plan has custom pricing and allows two target languages per project, with five translation memories and termbases per target language. It fits individual translators whose projects stay within those caps. Workgroup also has custom pricing and raises capacity to 24 target languages per project with unlimited translation memories and termbases per target language. That is the better fit for larger multilingual workflows.

Workgroup license bundles are offered in sizes of 5, 10, 20 and 50 licenses, each with custom pricing. The 30-day trial provides the Professional version before switching to Free mode. Atril's pricing note says paid plans start from €420.

Platforms

Déjà Vu X3 is desktop software for Windows. Atril lists support from Windows XP through Windows 10 and older Windows Server releases. ARM-based Macs cannot run it, including inside a Windows virtual machine, so it is a poor fit for Mac users relying on that hardware.

Who it's for

Choose Déjà Vu X3 if you translate regularly, have translation memories or termbases worth reusing, and need to handle varied file and CAT-tool formats. Workgroup is aimed at teams that need shared resources and workload coordination. The free edition makes sense when a translation firm sends you compatible satellite projects; it is not a strong choice for solo translators who need broad project freedom without paying.

Pros and cons

Broad format interoperability: support for many document and CAT-tool formats can ease work across client workflows.
Useful database-driven assistance: DeepMiner and AutoWrite draw on stored translations and terminology, rewarding translators with established language assets.
Team tools: Workgroup combines shared memories and termbases with multilingual projects and workload splitting.
Restrictive free mode: after the evaluation, the free edition is centered on standalone and satellite projects rather than general project work.
Windows-only desktop platform: there is no fit for Mac users, including those with ARM-based Macs running a Windows virtual machine.
Capacity limits on Professional: two target languages per project and five memories and termbases per target language may constrain more complex work.

Alternatives

CafeTran Espresso is worth considering if you need Linux, macOS or Windows support and a free plan capped at 1,000 translation units and 500 glossary terms. TextUnited fits a web or API workflow; its free tier includes one user, 15,000 words and 15 PDF pages per month. Verto offers a web-based free tier with one user, five active projects, 10,000 translation memory segments, 500 term base entries and 25,000 processed words per month.

ApSIC Xbench is another option, with a free-of-charge 2.9 edition described as non-Unicode freeware with frozen development, alongside a 3.0 plan at 99.00 EUR per year. locAGI may suit teams looking for a platform spanning API, Linux, macOS and web, with a free platform plan and unlimited seats. XTM Cloud is a paid alternative with a listed Team plan at 16500.00 USD per year. BasicCAT is a free, open-source CAT tool for Linux, macOS and Windows. OpenTM2 is a free, open-source translation memory tool for Windows.

Verdict

Déjà Vu X3 is a strong choice for Windows translators and teams who can build on existing translation memories and need broad file compatibility, quality checks or shared project resources. Its database-driven assistance and Workgroup tools give it a clear role in established translation workflows. Look elsewhere if you need a Mac app or a free edition for unrestricted solo projects.
