Overview

darktable is a free, open-source raw photo workflow application for photographers who want control over organizing and developing images. Its breadth is appealing, but the steep learning curve makes it a better fit for patient learners than anyone seeking a quick, guided editor.

It manages digital negatives in a database and provides a zoomable lighttable for browsing. Editing is non-destructive, so adjustments leave original images unchanged. Imports span standard, raw, and high dynamic range formats, including JPEG, CR2, NEF, HDR, PFM, and RAF.

For readers comparing workflows, see RAW Photo Processing Software, Photo Editing Software, and Batch Photo Processing Software.

Key features

Development and color

Raw processing, masking, and batch editing cover the core work of developing images and applying changes across a set. Automatic display-profile detection works on most systems, while built-in ICC profiles cover sRGB, Adobe RGB, XYZ, and linear RGB. Many operations can use OpenCL GPU acceleration, which may suit workflows that benefit from offloading image processing.

Capture, automation, and export

Tethered shooting with live view is supported for some camera brands, rather than across the board. Lua scripting can automate many parts of the application, a useful option for photographers willing to build a customized workflow. Exports can go to Piwigo webalbums, disk storage, email attachments, or HTML-based web galleries.

Optional AI

AI features are opt-in and disabled by default. They support object masking, denoising, and upscaling, but package choice matters: the Flatpak release excludes these features as of September 2026.

Pricing

darktable is free, with no free trial because the application is free. The free plan is the full open-source photography workflow application and raw developer under GPL version 3 or later; there is no cheaper tier that trades away features. Users instead need to consider the practical limits of their installation and workflow.

Platforms

darktable runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Downloads include Windows installers and macOS disk images, with Linux/Unix source, AppImage, package-manager, and Flatpak options. The provided macOS bundles require macOS 13.5 (Ventura) or later. Windows builds are not signed with a trusted code-signing certificate, so SmartScreen or Smart App Control may warn during installation.

AI availability varies by package: the Flatpak release does not include darktable's AI features. The application has no cloud sync, so users seeking synchronized libraries should look elsewhere. For support, the project directs users to the Pixls.us forum; GitHub Issues is the channel for bug reports and feature requests.

Who it's for

darktable suits photographers who want a flexible, no-cost raw workflow with database-based organization, broad import support, non-destructive editing, and batch tools. It is less suitable for people who need cloud sync, depend on DCP camera profiles, or expect to reuse presets from other programs: darktable supports neither DCP camera profiles nor presets made for other applications. Its steep learning curve also makes it a harder starting point for someone seeking a simple editor.

Pros and cons

Pro: Non-destructive editing and imports across standard, raw, and HDR formats support varied image libraries without changing originals.
Pro: Batch editing, Lua scripting, and OpenCL acceleration offer room to shape and streamline a workflow.
Pro: The free, open-source plan includes the raw developer without a paid tier or trial deadline.
Con: The steep learning curve can slow newcomers who want a guided or immediately familiar editing process.
Con: No cloud sync limits its fit for people who need libraries synchronized between devices.
Con: No DCP camera-profile support or compatibility with other programs' presets can disrupt established color and editing workflows.
Con: Flatpak users give up the opt-in AI features, and Windows installation may prompt security warnings because the builds lack trusted signing.

Alternatives

RawTherapee is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows, but it lacks digital asset management, printing, and uploading features; choose it if those functions are not central to your workflow.

Hasselblad Phocus is a free RAW-processing option for macOS and Windows; consider it if those are your platforms.

dcraw is free for all uses and supports Linux and Windows, making it an alternative to consider on those platforms.

Nitro is a paid option with a free plan and trial; its Lifetime purchase costs 99.99 USD per once and includes macOS, iOS, and future updates, so it fits readers open to a one-time purchase and those platforms.

ON1 Portrait AI is a paid alternative for macOS and Windows with a free trial and licenses listed for two or three computers.

ART is a free, open-source raw image processor for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Darkroom offers a free Starter tier and a 39.99 USD per year plan for macOS and iOS; consider it if those platforms suit your setup.

Nikon NX Studio is a free macOS and Windows desktop option, with Nikon camera and file-format support varying.

Verdict

Choose darktable if you want a free, flexible raw workflow with non-destructive editing and are willing to learn its tools. Look elsewhere if you need cloud sync, rely on DCP profiles or imported presets, or want a gentler learning curve.
