Overview

Datawrapper brings interactive visualization and publishing into one web app. It supports data imports, web publishing, and embedding, with a REST API for creating and editing charts and a PowerPoint add-in for working with visualizations inside presentations. The company was founded in 2012 and is headquartered in Berlin.

Datawrapper says its service is hosted in Frankfurt and Stockholm within the EEA, is ISO 27001 certified, and undergoes yearly audits and penetration tests. It says embeds use no trackers, cookies, or third-party scripts and meet GDPR and CCPA requirements. It also describes encryption at rest and in transit, TLS, daily backups, and peer-reviewed code.

Key features

Charts, maps, and tables

Datawrapper offers 25 interactive, responsive, accessible visualization types, including more than 20 chart types. That range lets users choose among formats rather than force every dataset into a basic chart. Map options include symbol, choropleth, and locator maps, along with more than 4,000 basemaps and cartograms. Tables can include images, heatmaps, and miniature charts, plus search, pagination, and sorting. These table controls are useful when readers need to inspect or navigate the underlying data, not just view a visual summary.

Publishing and workflow

Users can embed visualizations on websites and download PNG files on the free plan; PDF and SVG downloads require Pro or higher. The PowerPoint add-in supports creating, editing, embedding, and updating visualizations in presentations, while the REST API can support integrations such as CMS chart viewers and image exports. The Academy has more than 100 articles, and support is available by contact form and email; paid plans list email-based support.

Pricing

Datawrapper is freemium. Its free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes charts, maps, and tables, web publishing and embedding, PNG downloads, and unlimited publishing. The trade-off is visible “Created with Datawrapper” attribution, so it fits public-facing work where the branding is acceptable but not users who need unbranded output.

Pro costs 21.00 USD per month, billed per user/month excluding VAT. It removes attribution, adds PDF and SVG downloads, and keeps a 90-day edit history. It is the practical step up for individual publishers who need those export formats or clean embeds. Business costs 39.00 USD per month, billed per user/month excluding VAT, and adds waterfall and dual-axis charts, advanced team permissions, and a one-year edit history to Pro features. Those additions better suit teams with specialized chart needs or more involved collaboration.

Enterprise has custom pricing and offers custom agreements with uptime and support guarantees, self-hosting of published visualizations, and SAML single sign-on. It is aimed at organizations that need those deployment or access-control terms. Per-user billing on Pro and Business means team costs rise with seats; no total seat quota is given.

Platforms

Datawrapper is available on web, Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows, with API and self-hosted options. This coverage gives teams several ways to integrate or access the service, though its core authoring product is a web app.

Who it's for

Datawrapper suits journalists, analysts, and teams that need to turn data into charts, maps, or tables and publish them interactively. Its map depth, table controls, API, and presentation add-in give it uses beyond simple chart embeds. The free plan is viable for attributed publishing; users needing unbranded content, more export formats, or enhanced team controls should budget for a paid tier.

Pros and cons

Broad visualization coverage: charts, several map styles, cartograms, and data-rich tables support varied presentation needs.
Flexible publishing: web embedding, PNG downloads, a PowerPoint add-in, and an API cover multiple destinations and workflows.
Useful free publishing: unlimited publishing and embedding make it possible to publish without a subscription, but attribution remains visible.
Paid export gate: PDF and SVG downloads and removal of attribution start with Pro, adding per-user cost for teams that need them.
Business-tier controls: advanced team permissions and a longer edit history cost more than Pro, which may be unnecessary for solo users.

Alternatives

For a more story-led presentation, Understand offers unlimited stories and scrollytelling on its free Starter plan, alongside CSV upload and manual entry. Graphtelling is a lower-priced chart-oriented option at 10.00 EUR per month for Pro, but its free plan limits users to three charts, JPEG export, and branding. For map-focused storytelling, Unmapped has a free plan with three branded published stories and manual 2D editing; its Pro plan costs 29.00 USD per month.

Infogram is another freemium alternative with interactive charts and maps. BStreams is another freemium option. Flourish offers unlimited projects and stories with public publishing and embeds on its free plan, with attribution. Mimasa AI has a free tier with five credits per day, one user, and 100MB of storage. ArcGIS StoryMaps offers a free public account for individuals, with usage limits.

Readers comparing broader categories can also browse Data Storytelling Tools, Data Visualization Software, Infographic Software, Map Creation Software, and Interactive Map Software.

Verdict

Choose Datawrapper if you need varied charts, maps, and tables with interactive web publishing, plus routes into presentations and integrations. Its free plan is generous for attributed publishing; look elsewhere or plan for Pro if attribution-free embeds and PDF or SVG exports are essential, and consider Business or Enterprise only when their team or deployment controls matter.
