Overview

DaVinci Resolve is a desktop post-production suite that brings video editing, color, effects, motion graphics, audio and photo work into one application. It is best for creators and post-production teams who need that breadth, rather than a focused tool for a single stage. The free edition is unusually capable, while Studio is the route to higher resolution, faster frame rates and additional specialist tools.

Key features

One post-production workflow

Resolve combines editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, audio post and photo editing; version 21 adds a dedicated Photo page for still images. That scope can keep a project in one application from edit through finishing, but is more than necessary for someone who only needs a basic editor.

Its effects toolkit includes node-based compositing, keying, rotoscoping, 3D camera tracking and simulation, with GPU rendering. AI tools cover facial recognition, object detection, smart reframing and Speed Warp retiming. Support for third-party Open FX, audio plugins, titles and motion-graphics templates leaves room to extend the workflow.

Audio, storage and collaboration

Fairlight can handle up to 2,000 tracks with real-time effects, EQ and dynamics processing, alongside surround mixing and live audio input. That capacity suits demanding audio post, though it may be excessive for projects with modest sound needs.

Resolve works with direct-attached drives, NAS and SAN systems. Blackmagic Cloud can host projects and media for access from anywhere, and team collaboration is supported. Major file formats and transfers involving Final Cut Pro, Media Composer and Premiere Pro make it more practical to fit Resolve into a mixed-application pipeline.

Pricing

DaVinci Resolve Free is available at no cost, with editing and finishing up to Ultra HD 3840 × 2160 and 60 fps. For many creators, that is a meaningful ceiling rather than a short trial: it supports substantial work without a purchase. The free edition does not reach Studio's 32K resolution or 120 fps limits.

DaVinci Resolve Studio costs $295.00 USD per once. It raises the limits to 32K and 120 fps, and adds temporal and AI spatial noise reduction, more than 45 additional GPU- and CPU-accelerated Resolve FX, Python and LUA scripting, and developer APIs. Studio is the fit for higher-end delivery or workflows that depend on those tools; otherwise, the free edition avoids an unnecessary purchase. The Studio price is a one-time purchase, not a recurring subscription.

The DaVinci Resolve plan also covers up to Ultra HD and 60 fps; the free download is the no-cost option at those limits. There is no need to pay for Studio unless the extra ceiling or features matter to the work.

Platforms

Resolve is a desktop application for macOS, Windows and Linux, with mobile app availability also indicated. The supported desktop operating systems make it a fit for varied workstation environments; no specific mobile operating system is identified.

Who it's for

Resolve suits editors, colorists, audio post teams and creators who want a broad post-production toolkit, particularly those sharing projects or media through cloud and network storage. Its free edition makes it accessible to people working within Ultra HD and 60 fps. Studio is more appropriate for high-resolution or high-frame-rate production, noise reduction, expanded effects or scripting. A user seeking only a narrow, lightweight task-specific app may not need its full workflow.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free edition supports up to Ultra HD and 60 fps, giving creators substantial editing and finishing capacity without a purchase.
Pros: Editing, color, effects, motion graphics, audio and photo work share one application, with collaboration and broad storage support for team workflows.
Pros: Studio adds 32K and 120 fps support plus noise reduction, extra effects and scripting for more demanding production.
Cons: Work beyond Ultra HD or 60 fps requires the $295 Studio purchase.
Cons: Its broad set of post-production capabilities may be more application than a user needs for a single, simple editing task.

Verdict

Choose DaVinci Resolve if you want editing and multiple post-production disciplines in one desktop workflow, with a free edition that reaches Ultra HD at 60 fps. Its breadth and generous free limits are the strongest reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if you only need a focused tool, or budget for Studio if your work must exceed those limits or needs its added tools.
