Overview

Daytona combines isolated sandboxes with programmatic execution controls, targeting workloads such as AI evaluations, code interpreters, coding agents and data analysis. The appeal is a runtime that teams can integrate into their own workflows rather than a general-purpose end-user application. Its sub-90ms sandbox-creation claim supports responsive use cases, while metered compute and storage mean cost will depend on workload volume.

Key features

Execution APIs cover process execution, filesystem operations, Git integration and built-in language-server protocol support. SDK interfaces span Python, TypeScript, Ruby, Go and Java, giving engineering teams several routes to integrate the runtime. The CLI supports macOS, Linux and Windows; the MCP server supports Claude, Cursor and Windsurf. This is a strong fit for teams whose code and agent tooling already uses these interfaces, but the breadth matters less if they need a different integration path.

Daytona describes its sandboxes as isolated environments for AI-generated code. Network controls can allow outbound traffic by IPv4 CIDR or domain, block all outbound traffic, or route traffic through chained proxies. Organization-scoped secrets are encrypted at rest; sandboxes receive opaque placeholders, with plaintext substituted only for allowed HTTPS hosts. These controls give teams useful ways to constrain execution and secrets exposure. VPN connections through Tailscale, OpenVPN or Netbird require Tier 3 or higher, so VPN access is not an assumption to make when choosing a lower tier.

Prebuilds, persistent storage, GPU workspaces, JetBrains support, multiple VCS hosts and Dockerfile workspace configuration extend the runtime's usefulness across development workflows. Daytona also offers a self-hosted option. Its Trust Center lists GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2 and ISO/IEC 27001 compliance materials. Support may be provided through email, Slack, in-app chat, video support or community forums.

Pricing

Daytona uses a freemium model, but the listed plans do not give a single fixed price for metered use. The Pay-as-you-go plan includes 5 GiB of storage free before storage charges. The separate Pay as you go rate card charges $0.0504/h per vCPU, $0.0162/h for memory, $0.000108/h for storage and $0.0858/vCPU/h for Windows; the first 5 GiB of storage is free and $200 in free compute is included. GPU rates vary by model and whether use is preemptible or on-demand. This model suits variable workloads that benefit from scaling, but requires monitoring resource use rather than relying on a flat subscription.

Start-ups is 0.00 USD per free, billed in credits, with up to $50k in credits for free. It can help qualifying start-ups get started without an upfront plan charge, but credits are not the same as a permanent fixed-rate allowance. Enterprise has custom pricing and adds larger limits, SSO, audit logs and BYOC, making it the relevant tier for organizations that need those controls and deployment options.

Platforms

Daytona supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows environments. The CLI's documented installation platforms are macOS, Linux and Windows. This range gives teams flexibility across local development and hosted or self-managed setups.

Who it's for

Daytona is a good match for developers and platform teams building AI code execution or agent workflows that need isolated runtimes, API access and configurable outbound network rules. Teams using its supported SDKs or MCP agents can connect familiar tools, while organizations seeking self-hosting, GPU workspaces or enterprise features have options to consider. It is less compelling for buyers who need predictable flat-rate costs or VPN connectivity below Tier 3.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad execution APIs and SDK interfaces support integration into varied development stacks.
Pros: Network rules and scoped-secret handling provide specific controls for limiting sandbox access and plaintext exposure.
Pros: Self-hosting, GPU workspaces, persistent storage and enterprise features accommodate different deployment needs.
Cons: Compute and storage are usage-based, and GPU rates vary, so costs depend on workload consumption.
Cons: VPN connectivity requires Tier 3 or higher, which may rule out lower tiers for teams that need it.

Alternatives

Consider ANY.RUN if you want a freemium sandbox alternative with a free Community plan and support for Windows, Android and Ubuntu environments. Choose Vercel instead if your priority is a web and API platform with a free Hobby plan for personal, non-commercial use and published CDN, transfer and function allowances.

Docker Desktop may suit developers looking for a local desktop tool across Linux, macOS and Windows, with its free Personal plan including Docker Engine and Kubernetes. Northflank is worth comparing if you want a free Sandbox plan with always-on compute, services, a database and cron jobs.

microsandbox offers a free plan with bounded vCPU, memory and disk usage and up to three sandboxes, which may fit small, quota-defined workloads. E2B is an alternative for teams that value an Apache-2.0-licensed, self-hostable runtime.

Sandboxie Plus is a Windows-only alternative with free personal use and paid options. Tenki Code Reviewer is a focused alternative for code reviews, priced at $1.00 per review after included credits with no minimums or per-seat fees.

Verdict

Choose Daytona if you are building AI code or agent workflows and want isolated execution, broad programmatic control and meaningful network and secrets safeguards. Its strongest reason to buy is the combination of integration options and runtime controls; its main reason to look elsewhere is the need to forecast usage charges or access VPN connections without Tier 3.
