Overview

Tuta combines end-to-end encrypted email with an encrypted calendar, and its clients are fully open source for inspection by security experts. It also uses quantum-resistant cryptography. Data is stored on Tuta servers in ISO 27001-certified data centers in Germany; the company is based in Hanover and was founded in 2011.

The lack of mail protocol support is a practical constraint, not a footnote: people who need to connect a conventional mail client should look elsewhere. Tuta instead offers its own apps and browser access, with offline use as a paid-plan benefit. That arrangement makes the most sense for users who prioritize privacy and are comfortable staying within Tuta’s client ecosystem.

Key features

Encrypted calendar and invitations

The calendar is encrypted alongside email. Free users get one calendar, while both paid plans include unlimited calendars, sharing and event invitations. Invitations to external users can optionally be protected with a shared password. That makes paid plans more useful for coordinating across schedules; the free plan is adequate for a single personal calendar.

Aliases, domains and importing

Revolutionary includes 15 extra email addresses and three custom domains; Legend raises those allowances to 30 extra addresses and 10 domains. Custom domains are limited to paid plans, so the free account is not a route to using a personal domain. Desktop clients can import EML and MBOX files, which helps when moving existing mail into Tuta.

Pricing

Tuta is freemium. The Free plan costs 0.00 EUR per free and is billed annually; it includes 1 GB of storage, one calendar, three labels and end-to-end encryption. It is a useful no-cost starting point, but the storage cap and single calendar leave little room for a growing archive or multiple schedules.

Revolutionary costs 3.00 EUR per month, billed annually. It raises storage to 20 GB and adds 15 extra email addresses, three custom domains, unlimited calendars and offline support. This is the practical upgrade for an individual who needs a domain or more room without paying for the largest tier.

Legend costs 8.00 EUR per month, billed annually. It includes 500 GB, 30 extra email addresses, 10 custom domains, unlimited calendars and priority email support, which replies within one business day. The larger allowance suits users with substantial storage needs; it is unnecessary if Revolutionary’s 20 GB is enough.

Family multi-user support can be activated through support on paid plans. Revolutionary family members cost €3 per user per month, and shared mailboxes cost €3 per month. On Legend, family members cost €8 per user per month and shared mailboxes cost €8 per month. These per-user and mailbox charges matter when extending a plan beyond one person.

Platforms

Apps are available for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, with browser access as well. This range covers the major desktop and mobile platforms, though the absence of mail protocols means those apps and the browser are the supported way to use the service. Offline support is included among paid-plan benefits.

Who it's for

Tuta is a strong fit for privacy-conscious individuals who want encrypted email and calendars across desktop and mobile, can work without standard mail protocols, and value open-source clients. Paid plans are more appropriate for people who need custom domains, multiple calendars, family use or greater storage. Anyone who depends on a conventional mail client or needs more than the free tier’s 1 GB should weigh that constraint or the annual-billed upgrade carefully.

Pros and cons

Pros: End-to-end encryption covers email and calendar, with quantum-resistant cryptography and open-source clients.
Pros: Apps span Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, with browser access too.
Pros: Paid plans add custom domains, expanded aliases, unlimited calendars and offline use; Legend offers 500 GB.
Cons: No mail protocol support rules out users who need a conventional client connection.
Cons: The free plan’s 1 GB, one calendar and three labels make it a limited long-term option for heavier use.
Cons: Family use is an activated paid-plan option with per-user and shared-mailbox charges.

Verdict

Choose Tuta Mail if encrypted email and calendar, open-source clients and broad platform coverage matter more than connecting through a standard mail protocol. Its free plan is a reasonable entry point, while Revolutionary is the more balanced paid choice for a custom domain, extra addresses and 20 GB. Look elsewhere if protocol support is essential, or choose Legend only when its 500 GB, larger domain and alias allowances, or priority support justify the higher annual-billed price.
