Overview

MagicBPM is a tempo-reading app and metronome for musicians who want to work with music playing aloud. It is best suited to finding a track’s pulse and practicing against it, rather than analyzing saved recordings. Its combination of live detection, tempo visualization, and metronome controls is useful, but the microphone-only input is a clear boundary.

The BPM display changes as music plays and includes a confidence indicator as the reading settles. A scrolling tempogram adds context when tempo shifts, while tap tempo offers a manual route. MagicBPM can listen while music plays through Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Deezer, and other services, but it cannot import audio files.

Tempo analysis runs on-device; microphone audio is not recorded or uploaded. Song identification is separate: it needs an internet connection and sends an acoustic fingerprint to Apple’s Shazam service. Identification is disabled on CarPlay and Bluetooth hands-free routes. The free app uses Google AdMob; its privacy policy says MagicBPM runs no own servers and uses no analytics or crash-reporting tools.

Key features

Live tempo detection: A changing BPM readout and confidence indicator are useful for judging when a reading has settled, rather than relying on a single early estimate.
Metronome: Tempo reaches 300 BPM, with eight time signatures, accented downbeats, and eighth-note, triplet, and sixteenth-note subdivisions. That gives practice sessions meaningful rhythmic flexibility; custom time signatures are not supported.
Tempo visualization: The scrolling tempogram shows changes over time, making the app more informative than a tempo number alone when a piece varies in pace.
Song identification and history: Identification can recognize music playing aloud, and song history can link to Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, TIDAL, or SoundCloud. The internet requirement and disabled hands-free routes make this a convenience rather than a dependable offline tool.
Developer SDK: A licensable iOS and Android SDK provides on-device, offline tempo detection. It is tuned for steady rhythmic material; the maker says general-purpose libraries are stronger for broad offline analysis of jazz, classical, and solo acoustic music.

Pricing

MagicBPM uses a freemium model. The Free plan is free and includes the core app. The iPhone and Android apps show ads, while the Mac app is ad-free. This is a sensible starting point for tempo reading and metronome use, but it does not include the Pro-only identification and history features.

MagicBPM Pro is a one-time purchase with custom pricing. It adds automatic song identification, song history, 12 additional metronome sounds, and removes ads on iPhone and Android.

Platforms

MagicBPM is available on Android, iOS, macOS, and the web. Device support includes Android phones, iPhone, iPad, Mac, and an Apple Watch metronome. Minimum versions are macOS 15, iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and Android 9, so older devices may not qualify. Tap tempo is supported. The metronome’s maximum is 300 BPM; custom time signatures are not.

Who it's for

Choose MagicBPM if you want to identify the tempo of music playing nearby, see tempo shifts, and practice with a configurable metronome across Apple and Android devices. It also suits developers seeking an offline tempo-detection SDK for steady rhythmic material, subject to licensing discussions with the maker.

Look elsewhere if your workflow depends on importing recordings, analyzing them offline across varied genres, or identifying songs through CarPlay or Bluetooth hands-free audio. For privacy-conscious listeners, the distinction matters: tempo analysis stays on-device, but identification sends a fingerprint to Shazam.

Pros and cons

Pro: Live BPM readings include a confidence indicator, helping users see when detection has settled.
Pro: The metronome’s subdivisions, accents, eight time signatures, and 300 BPM ceiling suit varied practice needs.
Pro: Tempo analysis does not upload or record microphone audio, and the Mac app is ad-free on the free plan.
Con: There is no audio-file import, so users cannot analyze a saved track directly.
Con: Song identification needs internet access, shares an acoustic fingerprint with Shazam, and is disabled on CarPlay and Bluetooth hands-free routes.
Con: The free iPhone and Android apps contain ads, while Pro’s one-time price is custom pricing.

Alternatives

Metronome Apps is a useful place to compare more options. Consider True Metronome if its free 20–400 BPM range, background playback, and time-signature support better match your practice needs. Choose Bounce Metronome Pro if you want a metronome for Linux or Windows as well as macOS.

Metronome Beats is another free, ad-supported option, with an iOS Pro in-app purchase priced at 8.99 USD per once. Easy Metronome may suit users who want a free app with optional sound-pack purchases. Consider PolyMetronome if Android, iOS, and web coverage is the priority and its Simple Mode meets your needs.

The Metronome by Soundbrenner offers a free core app across Android, iOS, and macOS. Pro Metronome may be a better fit for someone seeking an ad-free basic free version or a 3.99 USD one-time Pro purchase on Android or iOS. For a free desktop option that works offline and needs no account, consider Yames.

Verdict

MagicBPM is a strong fit for musicians who want a live tempo reading, a view of pace changes, and a capable metronome in one app. Its on-device tempo analysis is a meaningful privacy advantage. Choose it for music playing aloud and cross-platform practice; look elsewhere if you need file import, broader offline analysis, or identification that works without an internet connection.
