Overview

DesktopHut is a live-wallpaper library and a set of tools for displaying and creating animated backgrounds. It is best suited to people who want to personalize a desktop or phone, especially Windows users managing multiple monitors. Its appeal is the breadth of its wallpaper and editing options at no cost; its personal-use license rules it out for commercial deployment.

The library contains more than 67,000 live and animated wallpapers, organized by category and tag. That gives enthusiasts, gamers and artists room to browse for a specific look, while the Motion Photo Editor offers a way to turn their own still images into moving backgrounds.

Key features

Browse and create

The editor uses 65 motion presets and about 30 particle assets to animate photos. It exports MP4, GIF and WebP, as well as HTML live wallpapers and DesktopHut’s native .dh packages. This is useful for creators who want to work from an image rather than source a finished video, though the range of presets and assets does not by itself establish how much control the editor offers over individual effects.

Studio accepts MP4, WebM, MOV and MKV video, animated GIF, and static PNG, JPG and WEBP files. DesktopHut wallpapers are standard MP4 files that also work with Wallspace for macOS, Lively Wallpaper and Wallpaper Engine, making the video output usable beyond DesktopHut’s own software.

Multi-monitor and performance controls

DesktopHut Studio can assign a different wallpaper to each display, span one background across monitors, and automatically restore per-monitor assignments. Those options make it a stronger fit for multi-screen setups than a basic wallpaper changer. Hardware decoding, quality settings, FPS limits and Low Resource Mode give users ways to manage resource use; automatic pausing during fullscreen apps, games and screen lock further limits playback when a moving background is less useful.

Privacy and support

DesktopHut says its software contains no adware, spyware, toolbars or bundled software, and that it has been certified clean on VirusTotal. The project is funded by non-intrusive website display ads rather than popup ads or ad-supported installers. The Chrome extension stores wallpaper preferences and bookmark data locally, without sending them to DesktopHut servers. DesktopHut says it is based in Lithuania and aims to handle data in line with the EU GDPR. Users can contact support through its official Discord server or email.

Pricing

DesktopHut Studio Free: Free, billed Forever. The plan covers Windows 10/11 64-bit and has no subscription or trial; there is no premium tier. For Windows users, that means the listed Studio plan has no recurring charge or paid upgrade to budget for. It is a personal-use tool, not a free option for commercial use.

The free plan gives up no separately priced Studio tier, but its Windows-only coverage limits who can use the desktop app. DesktopHut’s broader software lineup includes mobile and other platforms, but Studio’s listed plan is specifically for Windows. There is no free trial because the plan is free.

Platforms

DesktopHut’s platform coverage includes Android, a browser extension, macOS, web and Windows. The multi-monitor, restoration and performance controls belong to DesktopHut Studio, whose plan supports Windows 10/11 64-bit. The Chrome extension’s locally stored preferences and bookmarks may suit users who want wallpaper and bookmark settings without that data being sent to DesktopHut servers.

Who it's for

Choose DesktopHut if you want a large animated-wallpaper collection, want to create moving backgrounds from photos, or need per-display assignments and playback controls on a Windows multi-monitor setup. Its file support and standard MP4 wallpapers also make it practical for people who use more than one wallpaper application. Look elsewhere if you need a commercial license, or if you want Studio’s multi-monitor controls on a non-Windows desktop.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 67,000 wallpapers with category and tag organization give users a substantial library to browse.
Pros: Photo animation, multiple export formats and support for common video, image and GIF files serve both creators and wallpaper collectors.
Pros: Independent monitor assignments, span mode, restoration and resource controls address practical needs on multi-display Windows systems.
Cons: The Studio plan is for Windows 10/11 64-bit, so its desktop controls do not cover other desktop platforms.
Cons: The personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable license is limited to personal non-commercial use.

Alternatives

Desktop Wallpaper Software is the broader category to browse when you want to compare wallpaper tools beyond DesktopHut.

Verdict

DesktopHut is a strong choice for personal wallpaper customization, particularly for Windows users who want a large library, photo-animation tools and multi-monitor controls without a subscription. The main reasons to look elsewhere are the personal non-commercial license and the Windows-specific Studio plan if you need those desktop controls on another platform.
