Overview

The service brings together seven dictionary and grammar references, with the full A–Z content of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary and Oxford Advanced American Dictionary available online at no charge. Audio pronunciation, usage examples and translation lookup make the free dictionaries useful for study as well as quick reference. Its main limitation is that the richer learning tools are split between free beta resources and paid app features.

Key features

Vocabulary and grammar

The Oxford 3000, Oxford 5000 and Oxford Phrase List are aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, giving learners structured vocabulary lists rather than an unfiltered word collection. Learn & Practise Grammar adds free explanations and interactive exercises, but remains in beta, so it is better treated as a supplement than the sole basis for a grammar course.

The Oxford Learner’s Dictionary of Academic English includes 50,000 examples and links its coverage to the OPAL academic vocabulary list. That makes it a useful choice for readers working with academic English, though it is more specialized than the two broad learner dictionaries.

Paid study tools and API

OALD Premium adds iSpeaker, iWriter, My Word Lists, downloadable resources and ad-free pages for OALD and OAAD. Those features are most relevant to learners who will use the apps’ speaking, writing and list-building tools; casual web lookups can stay on the free dictionaries. The Oxford Dictionaries API supports 35 languages and six programming languages, with search filters and endpoints for sentence data, words and inflections. Its sandbox trial includes 500 calls, a bounded way for developers to evaluate integration before committing to broader access.

Pricing

The free online plan is free and includes the full A–Z OALD and OAAD, Text Checker, word lists and sample resources. It is the sensible starting point for learners focused on reference and vocabulary, but does not include the paid app’s full feature set. App access begins with a free 3-day trial, followed by three paid durations: One-month access to OALD10 app costs 3.99 USD per month; One-year access to OALD10 app costs 9.99 USD per year; and Four-years access to OALD10 costs 29.99 USD per once. Each paid option provides unlimited dictionary access for its stated period. The month option limits commitment, while the longer terms suit readers who expect to use the app consistently.

OALD Premium features are distinct from the stated OALD10 app access plans. No seat or call quota is given for the API beyond the sandbox’s 500 calls, so developers should confirm commercial terms before relying on it. Customer Support is available by email and telephone from 08:00 to 17:00 GMT, Monday to Friday.

Platforms

Oxford supports web, iOS, Android, macOS and API access. iWriter and iSpeaker do not run in Internet Explorer, and double-click lookup of unknown words is unavailable on mobile devices. Those limits matter most to users who depend on that browser or use rapid in-entry lookup on a phone.

Who it's for

The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary is designed for advanced-level learners of British or American English. Students who need examples, pronunciation and CEFR-aligned vocabulary can get substantial value from the free web access; academic readers gain a more focused reference through the Academic English dictionary. Developers can consider the API when multilingual dictionary data and sentence or inflection endpoints fit their project, while those seeking a complete grammar course or all premium study tools at no cost should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Full online A–Z access to two major learner dictionaries is free, with audio, examples and translation lookup for practical study.
Pros: CEFR-aligned word lists and an academic dictionary with 50,000 examples support focused learning beyond basic definitions.
Pros: The API covers 35 languages and includes a 500-call sandbox trial for initial evaluation.
Cons: iWriter and iSpeaker are paid Premium features, and the grammar exercises are still in beta.
Cons: Mobile users cannot double-click unknown words within entries, and Internet Explorer users cannot run iWriter or iSpeaker.

Alternatives

For a broader set of options, start with Online Dictionaries. MDBG Chinese Dictionary is the more relevant alternative when Chinese lookup and learning tools are the priority; its free online dictionary is available at no charge. Choose ABBYY Lingvo if its desktop and mobile platform coverage better suits your setup. dict.cc offers free browser use for private and business purposes, making it a straightforward option for users who want a web dictionary without Oxford’s paid app tier. WordWeb is worth considering for its free Windows version, which includes definitions, synonyms, examples, basic AI suggestions and translations subject to licensing terms. GoldenDict is a free option for users comfortable downloading dictionary content separately. Larousse Dictionaries provides most online reference resources free without registration, with a forum requiring a free account. Merriam-Webster Dictionary suits users seeking a free app with ads, offline dictionary and thesaurus access, with a premium version that removes ads. PONS Dictionary offers ad-supported online use and a free-to-download translation app with in-app purchases.

Verdict

Choose Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries if you are an advanced English learner who wants substantial free British or American dictionary content, clear examples and structured vocabulary study. The strongest reason to look elsewhere is the split between free reference and paid app study tools, especially if mobile lookup convenience or a non-beta grammar resource is essential.
