Overview

All Discourse plans allow unlimited members, so audience size does not by itself determine the tier. The meaningful constraints are operational: staff seats, upload storage, monthly page views, monthly email, and, on the free plan, the number of categories. A small organization can run a useful hosted community at no cost, while larger teams pay mainly for additional capacity and support.

You can self-host the software or choose managed hosting. The complete codebase is freely available on GitHub, and Discourse says customers own their community and can export everything at any time. The platform powers more than 22,000 communities. Integrations include GitHub, chat providers, Zendesk, and authentication providers.

Key features

Moderation tools provide the controls needed to manage active member discussions, while private spaces support groups or conversations that should not be public. Event hosting and custom domains make the community suitable for organizations running programs under their own identity rather than a generic forum address. Mobile apps are available on both major mobile platforms, helping members participate away from a desktop.

Enterprise adds SSO, SAML, and enterprise authentication for organizations with formal identity requirements. It also includes a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Support ranges from community help to dedicated or priority email support and professional services, so the higher tiers are better suited to teams that need operational assistance rather than only the software.

Pricing

Paid hosting starts at $100 per month for Pro. Paid plans include a 14-day free trial, and no credit card is required up front for hosting plans. The tiers differ most in staff capacity, quotas, and service level.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Practical fit
Free	Free	Unlimited members, 2 staff seats, 500k monthly page views, 20k monthly emails, 10 categories, and 5GB storage	Good for a small community with two administrators or moderators. The category and storage limits can become restrictive as content and teams grow.
Pro	100.00 USD per month, billed monthly	Unlimited members, 5 staff seats, 500k monthly page views, 100k monthly emails, unlimited categories, and 20GB storage	The sensible starting point for a growing hosted community that needs more moderators, categories, and email capacity. Page-view capacity is unchanged from Free.
Business	500.00 USD per month, billed monthly	Unlimited members, 15 staff seats, 500k monthly page views, 300k monthly emails, unlimited categories, 100GB storage, priority support, and standard migration services	Fits established communities with a larger operations team, substantial uploads, or a planned move from another system. The 500k page-view ceiling still applies.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	For mission-critical communities that need unlimited staff access, higher quotas, enterprise authentication, and a contractual uptime guarantee.

Self-hosting is an alternative to these managed prices, but it places hosting responsibility with your organization. The free hosted tier is generous for audience size, yet its two staff seats, 5GB storage, and 20k monthly emails make it a poor fit for a large moderation team or media-heavy community.

Platforms

Discourse supports self-hosting and managed hosting, with mobile apps for both major mobile platforms. Self-hosting suits organizations able to operate their own infrastructure; managed plans suit teams that prefer Discourse to handle hosting and want access to trial periods, support, and plan-based service guarantees.

Who it's for

Choose Discourse for a membership, customer, or organizational community where durable discussions, moderation, private groups, and events matter. It is particularly strong for teams wanting open-source transparency, exportable data, and a choice between infrastructure control and a hosted service. It is less suitable when you need a very large staff without paying for Enterprise, or when your traffic, uploads, or email volume quickly exceed the fixed hosted quotas.

Pros and cons

Pros

Unlimited members on every plan: growth in audience does not automatically trigger a tier change.
Open-source and portable: the full codebase is available on GitHub, and Discourse says communities can export their data at any time.
Strong community toolkit: moderation, private spaces, events, custom domains, mobile apps, and integrations cover common organizational needs.
Useful free entry point: 500k monthly page views and 5GB storage can support a real small community without a subscription.

Cons

Free staffing is tight: only two staff seats and 10 categories may constrain a growing moderation team.
Resource quotas remain on paid tiers: Pro and Business retain 500k monthly page views, while email and storage limits require upgrades.
Enterprise pricing is custom: organizations needing unlimited staff, higher quotas, or enterprise authentication must request a quote.
Self-hosting requires operational ownership: infrastructure and administration remain your responsibility when you do not use managed hosting.

Alternatives

NodeBB is worth considering when a lower-cost hosted starter plan, unlimited staff users, and broad platform support are priorities; its Starter plan is 20.00 USD per month with 50,000 page views and 5GB storage.

HumHub suits teams seeking an AGPLv3, self-hosted community edition with a module marketplace and community support.

Circle is the alternative for organizations preferring a paid hosted platform with mobile apps and a Professional plan at 89.00 USD per month on annual billing.

Elgg is a free-to-download, self-hosted option.

Geneva is a free choice centered on group chats and community features across Android, iOS, and web.

Heartbeat fits communities that want a 49.00 USD monthly plan with 350 members and built-in channels, courses, events, documents, and landing pages.

ProfileGrid is a WordPress-oriented freemium alternative with a free core and a 79.00 USD monthly Premium plan.

BuddyBoss Platform is a freemium WordPress community option, with Platform Pro priced at 99.00 USD per year.

Verdict

Discourse is the right choice for organizations that want a serious discussion community with open-source control, exportable data, and the flexibility of self-hosting or managed plans. Start with Free for a small, lightly staffed group, move to Pro or Business as staff, storage, and email needs rise, and choose Enterprise when authentication, support, uptime, and higher quotas are mission-critical. Look elsewhere if your priority is avoiding operational work while also needing more staff and capacity than Discourse’s fixed hosted tiers provide.
