Overview

Serif is an AI assistant for shared business email that can take on repeatable inbox and document tasks. It is most useful to small businesses and operations teams that want automation with a human checkpoint for uncertain messages. The main trade-off is cost: the paid tiers start at $30 per month, and higher usage or team controls can push the bill up.

Key features

Serif can qualify and route inquiries, answer common questions, collect paperwork, send quotes, and follow up on unpaid invoices. That makes it a stronger fit for operational inboxes with recurring processes than for teams that only need help drafting replies. It connects to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, and it can also work from an address of its own.

When a message is ambiguous or sensitive, Serif escalates it to the team. Users can approve replies until they are comfortable allowing the assistant to work independently, a useful safeguard for businesses that cannot treat every incoming message as routine.

Serif states that it is SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR, and HIPAA compliant. It says emails are not used to train general AI models or stored on its servers; learned assistant data is encrypted at rest, email is accessible only to the user and assistant, and data is never sold. Those commitments will matter to teams handling sensitive correspondence, though they do not remove the need to assess the service against an organization’s own security requirements.

Pricing

Serif offers a $100 credit allotment without requiring a credit card, which gives teams a way to try the service before paying. Every plan includes a 7-day free trial with full access. Paid plans are billed monthly:

Lite — 30.00 USD per month: includes Serif AI, email triaging and drafting, plus full access to the meeting recorder, task manager, and knowledge base. It is the entry point for a user or team that wants the core assistant features, but it lacks the expanded usage and voice features of Standard.
Standard — 50.00 USD per month: includes five times Lite usage and True Voice. It suits users whose workload exceeds Lite’s allowance or who need the added voice capability.
Pro — 200.00 USD per month: includes twenty times Lite usage and dedicated support. This is aimed at heavier users who can justify the substantial jump over Standard and value dedicated assistance.
Team — 50.00 USD per month per user: provides pooled usage, shared playbooks and knowledge, centralized billing, team administration, and priority support. The per-user charge can add up as a team grows, but the shared usage and administration are more relevant to coordinated teams than individual plans.
Enterprise — custom pricing: adds dedicated onboarding, custom AI models, SCIM, SSO, role-based access, and custom data-retention policies. It is the option for organizations that need those controls and onboarding rather than a standard monthly tier.

Lite, Standard, and Pro are framed around multiples of Lite usage, but no numeric quota is given for those tiers. Teams should compare expected workload with the allowance before committing, particularly when choosing between Standard and the much more expensive Pro.

Platforms

Serif lists web access, desktop downloads for Mac (arm), Mac (x64), and Windows, and an iOS app. It also lists Gmail and Outlook as mail platforms. Android is coming soon, so teams that require Android mobile access should look elsewhere for now.

Who it's for

Serif is a sensible choice for small businesses and operations teams that manage recurring requests through shared addresses such as info@, support@, or billing@. Its routing, paperwork collection, quoting, and invoice follow-up can cover work beyond basic replies, while escalation and reply approval let teams retain oversight. It is less compelling for a light-duty inbox or a team that needs Android support, since the paid tiers and usage structure may be more than those users need.

Pros and cons

Pros: It combines routine email handling with operational tasks such as collecting paperwork and following up on invoices, which can reduce more than just drafting work.
Pros: Escalation and reply approval give teams a way to introduce automation while retaining control over uncertain messages.
Pros: The $100 in free credits requires no credit card, and paid plans include a full-access 7-day trial.
Cons: The $200-per-month Pro tier is a significant step up from Standard, so it only makes sense for users who need its higher usage and dedicated support.
Cons: Team costs $50 per user per month, making it potentially expensive as more colleagues need access.
Cons: Android is not yet supported, and the usage multiples do not give readers a numeric quota to plan against.

Alternatives

Zoho TeamInbox is worth considering when its free plan or shared-channel setup is a better fit: its Starter plan includes three shared incoming channels, 25 rules, ten shared outgoing email channels, and internal discussions and draft sharing.

Coherence may suit teams looking for a free starting point with a stated allowance: its free plan includes three users, 50 shared AI credits per month, and 2,500 records.

Help Scout is another freemium option; its free plan covers five users, one inbox, one Docs site, and 100 contacts per month.

Trengo is an alternative for teams considering a paid shared-inbox platform with mobile, desktop, and web availability.

Drag may be a better fit for teams that want shared inboxes inside Gmail with kanban, list, and preview board views; its Starter plan is 16.00 USD per month, billed monthly.

Loop Email is another paid option for teams comparing shared-inbox tools across mobile and desktop platforms.

Gmelius may suit teams comparing paid email-conversation plans with stated monthly conversation and user limits, including a Meli plan at 19.00 USD per month billed annually.

Helpwise is worth comparing for teams seeking shared inboxes across email, live chat, and Facebook; its Standard plan is 15.00 USD per month and requires at least two users.

Verdict

Choose Serif if your small business or operations team has recurring shared-inbox work to automate and wants people to review sensitive or unclear replies before the assistant acts alone. Its strongest case is the combination of practical email workflows and controlled escalation. Look elsewhere if your needs are modest, you need Android access, or the usage tiers and per-user team price do not fit your budget.
