Overview

PrairieLearn spans in-class activities, homework, practice, and testing, including proctored and bring-your-own-device tests. Its distinctive approach is to let instructors write questions as code that generate and grade variants. Students can keep trying new versions until they master a question, with real-time feedback along the way. That makes it particularly well suited to courses where repeated practice matters more than a fixed quiz; authoring questions as code is a less natural fit for instructors seeking a conventional, fixed-question workflow.

Response formats include numerical, multiple-choice, checkbox, dropdown, graphical, code, and ordered-block answers. Programming and math autograding, written-work OCR, and question banks broaden the kinds of coursework it can handle. LTI 1.3 supports assignment linking and grade syncing, with integration primarily designed and documented for Canvas. QTI 1.2 content can be imported from Canvas or other learning management systems.

Key features

Variant-based mastery practice: Automatically generated and graded question variants let students make repeated attempts without simply seeing an identical question each time. This favors courses designed around practice and mastery.
Assessment flexibility: The mix of response types and support for activities, homework, practice, and tests can serve varied instructional needs. Basic omits code autograding, so programming courses should compare plans before relying on it.
LMS connections and API: LTI 1.3 links assignments and syncs grades, while QTI 1.2 import can bring over existing assessment content. Canvas is the primary documented integration target; API access is also included among plan features.
Open source and security: Institutions and individuals can run and modify PrairieLearn on their own infrastructure. PrairieLearn, Inc. states it has a SOC 2 Type I attestation for Security and encrypts customer data at rest and in transit using TLS 1.2 or higher.
Support channels: Documentation, Slack community, GitHub Discussions, weekly Zoom office hours and workshops, and email support are offered. Those channels do not extend to self-hosted installations, which PrairieLearn does not support.

Pricing

PrairieLearn uses a freemium model with a free trial. The free plan is free and is free for instructors and courses with up to 20 students in each term. That cap makes it a practical starting point for smaller courses, but growing classes move into per-student pricing.

Basic: 8.00 USD per once, charged for every student when a course exceeds 20 students. It excludes code autograding, workspaces, and PrairieTest, so it is the lower-cost paid choice only when those capabilities are not needed.
Premium: 16.00 USD per once, charged for every student when a course exceeds 20 students. It includes code autograding, workspaces, and PrairieTest, making it the more complete choice for courses that need those tools.
Enterprise: Custom pricing with a custom service agreement available.

PrairieTest also has separate annual fees for non-PrairieLearn exam reservations: Starter is 3.00 USD per year with 20k included reservations; Small is 5.00 USD per year with 50k; Medium is 7.00 USD per year with 100k; Large is 10.00 USD per year with 200k; Enterprise is 15.00 USD per year with no limit on included reservations. These quotas make the appropriate tier depend on expected annual reservation volume.

Platforms

PrairieLearn supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. For local development, documentation supports native execution on macOS and Linux, and Windows inside WSL 2; Windows without WSL 2 is not supported for local installation.

Who it's for

PrairieLearn is a strong choice for instructors who want students to practice with changing question variants, use automated grading, or combine formative work with formal tests. It also suits institutions that need open-source software they can modify or operate themselves, provided they can manage a self-hosted installation without vendor support. Small courses can use the free plan; larger ones should assess the per-student fees and whether they need Premium features.

It is less compelling for instructors who do not want to author questions as code, and for institutions that need PrairieLearn to support an installation they host themselves. Courses above the free threshold that do not need Premium's additions can consider Basic, but its lack of code autograding rules it out for some programming instruction.

Pros and cons

Pro: Automatically generated question variants support repeated attempts and mastery learning.
Pro: A broad set of response formats, autograding, OCR, and assessment uses can accommodate varied course work.
Pro: Open-source operation and modification give institutions control over their installation.
Con: Self-hosted users do not receive PrairieLearn support, which makes that control a responsibility as well as a benefit.
Con: Basic excludes code autograding, workspaces, and PrairieTest, and paid course plans charge per student above 20.
Con: LMS integration is primarily designed and documented for Canvas, which may matter to institutions centered on another system.

Alternatives

For a broader selection, browse Automated Grading Software.

Wayground (formerly Quizizz) has a free Starter plan with a 20 activity limit, up to 100 participants per session, and limited library access. Consider it when those activity and session limits fit your needs.
Socrative has a free plan capped at five quizzes, one room, 50 students per activity, and 30-day report history. It may suit instructors whose activity and reporting needs fit those caps.
Gradescope offers a free Basic plan with basic assignment types, dynamic rubrics, question-by-question grading, assignment statistics, regrade requests, and data export. Choose it when those grading tools better match the assignment workflow.
Formative has a free teacher plan with unlimited activity creation, basic auto-grading and integrations, and released state test items. It is an option for teachers whose needs fit that free-plan mix.
MATLAB Grader is free with a current MATLAB license under maintenance; LMS integration requires a qualifying academic license. It is an alternative when those license conditions fit.
ClassMarker is another assessment platform to consider.
DMOJ offers free public contest hosting and paid private contest hosting for educational organizations. It suits organizations seeking contest hosting rather than PrairieLearn's broader assessment workflow.
HackerRank has a Starter plan at 165.00 USD per month, billed $1,990 billed annually, for one user, with screening and interviewing, 2,000+ questions, and 120 attempts per year. It is worth considering when that screening and interview offering is the better fit.

Verdict

Choose PrairieLearn for courses that need code-authored, variable questions, repeated mastery practice, and flexible assessment formats. Its mix of automated grading and open-source control is compelling, but per-student charges above 20 and the lack of self-hosted support are important constraints. Look elsewhere if you need vendor support for your own installation or a simpler fixed-question assessment workflow.
