Overview

Dropbox Sign is an online service for sending and managing signature requests, from occasional personal paperwork to business agreement workflows. Its templates and API make it more compelling for repeat processes than for high-volume batch sending.

Legally binding eSignatures under the U.S. ESIGN Act and support for signing on mobile, web, and through an API cover a broad range of needs. The free plan is useful for light use, but its three-request monthly cap makes a paid plan necessary for regular sending.

Key features

Templates retain prepared fields for recurring documents, so senders can avoid rebuilding each request. Essentials includes five templates and Standard includes 15; the larger allowance suits teams managing a wider range of repeat forms. Sequential signing lets recipients sign in a defined order, while identity verification and an audit trail support accountability. However, Dropbox Sign has no bulk-sending feature, making it a weaker fit for organizations that need to dispatch many requests at once.

Dropbox Sign signatures are legally binding under the U.S. ESIGN Act of 2000, with the same legal standing as pen-and-paper signatures. Senders and signers can use the service in 22 languages. Dropbox Sign states that it complies with SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, eIDAS, and GDPR, and encrypts documents at rest with AES 256-bit encryption.

Businesses can embed signing in a website for an in-app signer experience. API access includes official SDKs for Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, NodeJS, and C#, while OAuth 2.0 secures API endpoints and user data. Integrations include Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Workspace, Microsoft Word, Microsoft OneDrive, Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack, and Zapier. That breadth can connect signature requests to familiar business tools, though the lack of bulk sending remains a constraint for high-volume operations.

Mobile apps are available for iOS and Android, alongside web and API access. All users can expect an email-support response within one working day, Monday through Friday—useful for routine questions, but not a same-day or weekend support promise.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows three signature requests per month. It is suited to occasional signing, but the cap is restrictive for anyone handling agreements regularly.

Essentials costs 15.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes five templates and supports up to five users before contacting sales, making it the clearer fit for a small team that needs repeatable documents. Standard costs 25.00 USD per month, billed monthly, includes 15 templates, and starts at two users. That higher entry point buys more template capacity and a team-oriented starting configuration, so it is better suited to teams with several recurring workflows.

Premium has custom pricing and is aimed at large teams, with advanced signer tools and advanced reporting. The service also offers a 30-day trial. Compare the monthly plans against the annual starting price of $10.05/mo: the annual term is cheaper per month, while the monthly plan prices offer a different billing commitment. The three-request cap on Free and the absence of bulk sending matter whichever plan you choose.

Platforms

Dropbox Sign supports web, iOS, Android, and API access. Mobile apps let users handle signature workflows on phones, while the API and embedded signing are relevant to businesses adding signatures to their own products. Platform coverage is broad, but it does not remove the service’s batch-sending limitation.

Who it's for

Dropbox Sign suits individuals with occasional documents, small businesses that reuse forms, and teams that need a signing API or website embedding. Its integrations and 22-language support also suit organizations working across common office and business platforms. Look elsewhere if sending many requests in batches is central to your workflow, or if three requests a month will not cover your needs and the paid plans do not fit.

Pros and cons

Pros: Templates preserve prepared fields, reducing repeated setup for recurring documents.
Pros: API access, SDKs, and embedded signing support product-integrated workflows.
Pros: An audit trail, sequential signing, identity verification, and stated security compliance support accountable agreement handling.
Cons: The free plan allows only three requests per month, limiting its usefulness for regular senders.
Cons: No bulk sending makes large batches less practical.
Cons: Standard starts at two users, while Essentials supports up to five users before contacting sales; those structures may not suit every team size.

Alternatives

For another signing option with a free plan and API access, consider Signority API; its plans include a $12.00 USD per month Individual option, though the account downgrades to Free after the trial. sproof sign offers a free Private Plan for private individuals, students, and associations, or a Single plan at 15.00 EUR per month for those who prefer that paid option.

Secured Signing is another free-plan alternative, with a Free Account covering three documents per month and support for more platforms, including macOS and Windows. If you want a free signing option with no subscription, seat fees, or trial expiration, FreeSign is worth considering. BoldSign has a free Essential plan with 25 envelopes per month, two templates, and one user, a more generous stated free quota for users whose workflow fits that allowance.

Signeasy offers a Personal plan at 10.00 USD per month, billed yearly, with one user, five contracts sent monthly, and unlimited signing. For a mobile scanning tool rather than a signing platform, Adobe Scan is free to download and has an Acrobat Pro free trial. Adobe Acrobat Sign is another paid signing option with a free trial.

Verdict

Choose Dropbox Sign if you need reusable signature workflows, dependable API and embedding options, or a mobile signing app backed by a broad set of business integrations. Its main advantage is that it can serve both straightforward document requests and product-integrated signing. Look elsewhere if you need bulk sending or expect to exceed three monthly requests without committing to a paid plan.
