Overview

DVDStyler is free, open-source software for authoring and burning video DVDs with menus for standalone players. It is best suited to people who want control over a disc’s menu and need to combine video, audio, subtitles, or photos on DVD. Its strength is flexible authoring at no cost; its focus on DVD makes it a poor fit for anyone seeking a broader media library or a paid creator’s feature set.

Key features

Menu design is the central draw. Start from a template or arrange and customize buttons, text, images, and other objects yourself. The maker describes a drag-and-drop interface and menus built with scalable vector graphics, which give users room to shape a layout rather than settle for a fixed preset. That flexibility will appeal to someone designing a personal disc, though those who only want a quick, preset-led burn may not need it.

DVDStyler can create photo slideshows and add multiple audio and subtitle tracks. It supports manual chapter tools, dual-layer DVDs, and both DVD standards. The format list includes AVI, MOV, MP4, MPEG, OGG, WMV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, Xvid, MP2, MP3, and AC-3, among others. It can use MPEG and VOB files without re-encoding, and combine files with different audio or video formats on one disc. Those options help when a project draws on varied source files; they do not change the fact that the result is a DVD.

Pricing

DVDStyler is free. The free plan includes an open-source DVD authoring application, distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL), and there is no paid tier or free trial to weigh against it. That makes it an appealing choice for occasional DVD projects and users who value open-source software. The trade-off is a DVD-focused tool rather than a broader paid media-creation product.

Platforms

DVDStyler supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. The maker provides source code and Ubuntu downloads for Linux, and its downloads page offers Windows and macOS installers. The listed macOS installer requires OS X 10.15 Catalina or later, so older Macs may not meet its requirement. Users with support questions are directed to the DVDStyler forum.

Who it's for

Choose DVDStyler if you want a free way to author a DVD with a custom menu, multiple tracks, chapters, or a slideshow, especially when your source files use different formats. It is less suitable if you do not need DVD output or want to choose among paid products with a free trial.

Pros and cons

Pro: Customizable menus combine template starting points with control over buttons, text, images, and other objects.
Pro: Multiple audio and subtitle tracks, slideshows, manual chapters, and dual-layer support cover a range of DVD projects.
Pro: MPEG and VOB files can be used without re-encoding, and files with different audio or video formats can share a disc.
Pro: Free, open-source availability spans Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Con: Its purpose is DVD authoring, so it is not the right choice for someone who does not need a video disc.
Con: The listed macOS installer requires Catalina or later, excluding older macOS systems.

Alternatives

DVD Authoring Software is a useful place to compare more options. For a free Windows-only option, consider WinX DVD Author, which supports Windows 10/11. Open Burning Suite is another free, open-source disc-burning application for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Q DVD-Author is free GPL-2.0 software for Linux.

Among paid alternatives, Tipard DVD Creator has a free trial and a Mac monthly license at 24.00 USD per month. DVDFab DVD Creator offers a free trial and a Mac lifetime license at 59.99 USD per once. Wondershare DVD Creator has a free trial and a one-year subscription at 39.95 USD per year that automatically renews but can be canceled any time. For a Linux-only alternative, DeVeDe NG is free. PyBurn Studio is free software for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Verdict

DVDStyler is a strong fit for anyone who wants free, open-source DVD authoring with more menu control than a fixed template and useful support for mixed-format sources, multiple tracks, and slideshows. Look elsewhere if you need something beyond DVD creation or, on macOS, use a system older than Catalina.
