Overview

Built with Rust and Ratatui, FileManagerTUI puts a file tree and live preview side by side. Vim-style or arrow-key navigation, directory filtering, and a Ctrl+P fuzzy finder make it suited to users who work in a terminal and want several ways to move through project files without reaching for a mouse.

It combines file operations, an inline editor, and an embedded terminal in one interface. That breadth can make it a useful companion for terminal-centered workflows, but it is a specialized text interface rather than a conventional desktop file browser. The MIT license permits broad use, modification, distribution, sublicensing, and resale; the software comes without warranty or liability.

Key features

Navigation and file management

The dual-pane layout keeps browsing context visible while a user inspects a file. The preview supports syntax highlighting and Jupyter notebook cells. Files above a configurable threshold use a head-and-tail preview, which is more practical for inspecting large files than treating them as ordinary full previews.

Users can create, rename, delete, copy, cut, and paste files, with undo support. Ctrl+P searches project files and opens an action menu, while inline directory filtering offers another way to narrow a location. These controls suit keyboard-first work, though users who prefer point-and-click file management may find the interface less natural.

Editing and terminal

The inline editor includes syntax highlighting, undo and redo, find and replace, auto-indent, text selection, and mouse cursor positioning. An integrated PTY shell panel with VT100 emulation keeps command-line work within the application. Together, these features reduce the need to switch tools for common file and text tasks, but they do not turn it into a general-purpose desktop editor.

Remote browsing and configuration

S3 mode browses buckets through the AWS CLI and requires both that command-line tool and valid AWS credentials. It is read-only: create, rename, delete, and paste operations are disabled. That makes it suitable for inspecting remote objects, not managing them.

Layered TOML configuration, command-line overrides, file watching, and built-in Catppuccin Mocha and Latte themes with custom colors give users ways to adapt the interface. Building from source requires a Rust toolchain.

Pricing

FileManagerTUI is free under the MIT license. The free plan includes the software, with rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and sell copies. There are no paid tiers or usage quotas in the plan described; it is provided as-is without warranty. That makes the cost straightforward, but users who need support or a warranty should not assume either is included.

Platforms

FileManagerTUI supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. The repository provides binaries for Linux x86_64, Linux .deb, Linux AppImage, macOS Intel, macOS Apple Silicon, and Windows. Users can also install it with Cargo from the Git repository; that source route requires Rust.

Who it's for

FileManagerTUI is best for people who spend time in a terminal and want local file browsing, previews, common file operations, text editing, and a shell in one keyboard-driven application. Its notebook preview and large-file head-and-tail mode also suit users who inspect code, notebooks, or sizable text files. It is a poor fit for workflows that require S3 writes or depend on a graphical file manager.

Pros and cons

Pros: The dual-pane preview, inline editor, file operations, and terminal panel bring several routine tasks into one interface.
Pros: Vim-style and arrow-key navigation, filtering, and a fuzzy finder offer multiple keyboard-led ways to locate files.
Pros: Linux, macOS, and Windows binaries and an MIT license make it broadly accessible to install and adapt.
Cons: S3 mode is limited to read-only browsing and requires the AWS CLI and valid credentials.
Cons: Source installation requires Rust, adding a toolchain prerequisite for users who build rather than use a binary.
Cons: The project has 3 stars, 256 commits, 0 issues, and 0 pull requests shown on its repository page; users seeking visible community discussion may prefer a project with more of it.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse Terminal File Managers. Consider Broot if you want a free MIT-licensed option with Linux, macOS, and Windows support and precompiled binaries as well as source. far2l is another free choice for Linux or macOS, but it is beta software under GNU/GPLv2 and carries an explicit use-at-your-own-risk caveat.

Newt is a free, open-source option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Rat Commander suits readers looking for a self-contained free terminal file manager across those three platforms, with no paid tiers or usage limits stated. superfile is another free MIT-licensed, self-installed terminal application for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Pointer is a free single-binary option for Linux and macOS under the Unlicense. Zeta is a free MIT-licensed alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with Linux and Windows binaries. Runa is a free option for those three platforms, with no paid plans stated.

Verdict

Choose FileManagerTUI if you want keyboard-led local file management with previews, editing, and a shell in a single free, cross-platform terminal application. Its clearest limitation is S3: browsing works, but writes do not. If remote file changes or a graphical interface are central to your workflow, look elsewhere.
