Overview

Built around the Orton-Gillingham approach, Reading Mountain uses multisensory activities to teach reading and spelling. The recommended pace is about two hours a week, divided into short sessions such as four 30-minute sessions. That provides a manageable routine for home or instructional use, though it still calls for regular adult support if learners need help interpreting progress or following up on skills.

Only Levels 1 to 3 are available now. Levels 4 and 5 are in development, while Levels 6 to 16 are planned by the end of 2026. There is no placement assessment yet: the recommended starting point is Level 1, Lesson 1. That makes the entry path straightforward for beginners, but may leave more advanced learners spending time on material below their level.

Key features

Lessons move among reading tiles, spelling tiles, words, sentences, writing, games, and decodable books. Students read at least one decodable book per lesson, with AI support and comprehension questions. The combination gives learners practice applying sound patterns in connected reading, rather than restricting sessions to isolated drills.

Speech detection flags sounds and words a learner may struggle with. AI also generates reading-pattern insights and book reading-accuracy scores, while a parent and instructor portal provides progress reports and printable customized worksheets after lessons. These tools give adults useful material for planning follow-up, but they do not solve the program's lack of placement guidance.

The separate free Basecamp app offers sound segmenting, sound isolation, blending, and sound-swapping activities, with no login required. It can provide a no-cost way to practice phonemic awareness, but it is a separate app rather than a free version of the full lesson program.

Pricing

Basecamp is free and includes a separate phonemic-awareness app with no login. It suits families looking for sound-based practice without subscribing, but does not include Reading Mountain's full lessons or progress portal.

Individual costs 29.00 USD per month for one student and includes all levels and lessons. It is the direct choice for one learner, although the current available curriculum reaches only Level 3. Family costs 49.00 USD per month for up to four students, also with all levels and lessons; households supporting several learners can use one plan rather than paying for separate Individual subscriptions. Both paid plans are billed monthly, and a free trial is available.

Platforms

Reading Mountain works on Apple and Android phones and tablets, as well as laptops and computers through a browser. This range lets families use mobile devices for short sessions and instructors access the program on a computer.

Who it's for

Reading Mountain is aimed at early and struggling readers, including people with dyslexia, from children through adults. Families and instructors who value structured practice, decodable reading, and printable follow-up materials are its clearest audience. Readers who need a level assessment before starting, or who have already moved beyond Level 3, should consider a program with a better match for their current needs.

The privacy policy says the app collects student names and instructor name and email for educational purposes and does not sell user data. The app states that it complies with COPPA and gives parents or guardians rights to access, delete, or stop collection of a child's data. Trusted providers such as Google Firebase may host data solely to operate the app.

Pros and cons

Pros: Lessons pair multisensory reading and spelling practice with decodable books, giving learners several ways to work with sound patterns.
Pros: Reports, AI-generated reading insights, and printable worksheets give parents and instructors concrete material for follow-up.
Pros: Basecamp offers sound-awareness activities free, without a login, for families who want a low-commitment starting point.
Cons: Everyone starts at Level 1, Lesson 1 because there is no placement assessment, which can be inefficient for learners beyond the opening level.
Cons: The available curriculum stops at Level 3 for now, limiting its reach for learners who need later material.

Verdict

Reading Mountain is best for families and instructors seeking structured, multisensory literacy practice with decodable reading and practical progress support. Its lesson variety and adult-facing tools make it a considered choice for early or struggling readers, but the lack of placement assessment and the current Level 3 ceiling are meaningful constraints. Choose it when the learner is suited to the opening levels; look elsewhere if they need a tailored starting point or more advanced curriculum now.
